The Buddhist relics of Amaravati | Egmore Museum, Chennai

This is the story of the discovery of the oldest Buddhist art in the world!
Unearthed by chance in the ancient city of Amaravati (present-day Andhra Pradesh), these are the remnants of a Buddhist stupa built by the mighty Satavahana kings. Who were these Hindu kings who created such beautiful Buddhist art?
It is well known that Ashoka, the great Mauryan emperor, played a big part in the spread of Buddhism over 2000 years ago. But there were other historical events that were equally instrumental in the spread of Buddhism, such as Alexander’s invasion of India, that occurred much before Ashoka. The icons on the Amaravati sculptures, that were once used to represent Buddha himself, tell us the story of Buddhism and the evolution of Buddhist art. This video traces that story.
This video takes you to the Government Museum at Egmore, Chennai, home to the largest collection of these priceless Buddhist antiques, to tell you the story.

The Story of Indian Scripts - Part 1 | The cave inscriptions of Mamallapuram

Just how old are Indian languages, and which are the oldest scripts in India? Is there a mother of all scripts, in a land that is as diverse and variegated as India? What similarities or differences exist between the south Indian scripts, and do they have anything in common with the ones used in north India?

The first of this two-part video story explores these fascinating questions and more as it traces the evolution of Indian scripts over the last 2500 years. How are Tamil and Malayalam scripts related, and why do Telugu and Kannada scripts look so similar? How did Kanchipuram become the seat of Sanskrit learning in south India? This video begins from the Atiranachanda Cave Temple at Mamallapuram, where a set of ancient inscriptions reveal much about the movement of ideas between the north and south and the scripts and languages in use during Pallava times.

This video is brought to you in partnership with Tamil Nadu Tourism, Saint Gobain and the Department of Museums

Buddhist Monuments in Andhra Pradesh || JeelakaraGudem || West Godavari district ||

#Guntupalli Group of Buddhist Monuments:

The Guntupalle or Guntupalli Group of Buddhist Monuments is located near Kamavarapukota, West Godavari district, in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India.
It is around 40 km away from Eluru.

1. The rock-cut part of the site has two Buddhist caves, a chaitya hall and a large group of stupas.

2. The chaitya hall has a rare carved stone entrance replicating wooden architecture, a simpler version of that at the Lomas Rishi Cave.

3.There are remains of structural buildings in brick and stone, including remains of two vihara made of brick, as well as excavated caves at two levels, including an unusual structural chaitya hall (that is, one built above ground).
4. The core of this consists of the stone stupa with an enclosed path around it allowing ritual parikrama (circumambulation). They mostly date to 200-0 BCE, with some sculptures added later. The main building above ground is in brick, around a stone stupa, with over 30 smaller stupas on a terrace in front of it. There are ruins of two other buildings.
During excavation, three relic caskets were found.

5. The caskets had many precious elements like gold, silver, crystal beads. The bronze image of Padmapani was found along with one of the caskets. The inscription on the casket was in the Devanagari script which indicates the year as from the 9th to 10th century CE.

Kesariya – The Largest Buddhist Stupa!!केसरिया बौद्ध स्तूप विश्व का सबसे बड़ा प्राचीन बौद्ध स्तूप!!

#kesariyabuddhastupa, #kesariyalargestbudhhiststupa,#bihartourism,#sandilyavlogs,#archeologicalsitesofbihar,#kesariyabihar,#muzaffarpurvlogs,#केसरियाबौद्धस्तूप,

Help sandilyavlogs by giving donation for social cause:-

Kesariya Stupa is a Buddhist stupa in Kesariya, located at a distance of 110 kilometers from Patna, in the East Champaran district of Bihar, India. The first construction of the Stupa is dated to the 3rd century BCE. Kesariya Stupa has a circumference of almost 400 feet and raises to a height of about 104 feet. The stupa is said to be the tallest and the largest Buddhist stupa in the world and is one ft taller than the famous Borobodur stupa in Java. It was discovered in 1998 through excavation by the Archaeological Survey of India. The site's exploration reportedly started in the early 19th century, from its discovery led by Colonel Mackenzie in 1814 to General Cunningham's proper excavation in 1861–62. An excavation was conducted by archaeologist KK Muhammed of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in 1998.

The original Kesariya stupa probably dates to the time of Ashoka (circa 250 BCE), as the remains of a capital of a Pillar of Ashoka were discovered there. The stupa mound may even have been inaugurated during the Buddha's time, as it corresponds in many respects to the description of the stupa erected by the Licchavis of Vaishali to house the alms bowl the Buddha has given them.

Two great foreign travelers, Faxian (Fahien) and Xuan Zang (Hsuan Tsang), had visited this place in ancient times and have left interesting and informative accounts of their travels. They have written at length about Kesaria’s unique geographical location, cultural vibrancy, and ancient heritage. Lord Buddha, during his journey from Vaishali to Kushinagar, had spent a night at Kesariya where he reportedly made some historical revelations. These were later recorded in a Buddhist Jataka story.

In ancient times, Kesaria was under the rule of the Mauryas and the Licchavis.

The discovery of gold coins bearing the seal of the famous emperor Kanishka of the Kushan dynasty goes on to further establish the ancient heritage of Kesaria.

Recent excavations clearly show the huge Stupa to have a polygonal base of at least 6 floors with re-entrant angles. The top of the Polygonal brick floors is capped by a solid brick tower, which was originally 80 to 90 feet high.

According to Faxian, Lord Buddha had announced his impending death or Nirvana just before leaving Vaishali for Kesaria. The overwhelmed Licchavis accompanied Lord Buddha up to Kesaria and did not want to leave him. Lord Buddha then created a large pond them and, donating his alms – bowl to the Licchavis at Deora, bade them goodbye. In the memory of Lord Buddha, the Licchavis erected a pillar and a grandiose Stupa at this spot.

The current stupa dates to the Gupta Dynasty between 200 AD and 750 AD and may have been associated with the 4th century ruler Raja Chakravarti. The local people call this stupa Devala, meaning house of god. Before the excavation of this, they believed that inside it there is a temple of Shiva built by King Bhema.

The ASI has declared the stupa a protected monument of national importance
