Ep2 Pontoon crossing on our way to Tirasberge

Early morning departure from Sendelingsdrif and crossing with the pontoon. Fuel stop at Rosh Pinah then Aus on our way to Tirasberge where we stayed for 1 night before heading to Sossusvlei Oasis.
Tirasberge welcomed us with a stunning sunset and a full moon rising behind mountain peaks.
Just another night together as family and realising how blessed we are to travel together.

Voigtsgrund Karakul Farm ruins in Maltahohe area of Hardap Region, Namibia-3

Was and is video - ruins of Voigtsgrund (Voightsgrund) Farm, once one of the most beautiful and productive in Maltahohe area in the south of Namibia. Video shot in January 2022. Part 3 of 3.

#Voigtsgrund #Namibia #RuinsAfrica

2015:
What was once described as the most beautiful farm and a remarkable artefact in Karakul pelts production in the South from 1907 is now in a horrifically dilapidated state since it was vandalised and neglected in the last eight years as government property.

The 108-year-old Voightsgrund farm is a historic relic as it was the first producer of Karakul pelts, known as the black diamonds of Namibia, and known for its quality worldwide and a valuable foreign currency earner.

The farm became a government property in pre-independent Namibia and in post-independence was still operating as a magnificent Karakul producer until the farmstead was stripped of all valuables, vandalised beyond recognition, and production came to a standstill when it was divided into portions as a resettlement farm.

Attempts are now underway to grow the Karakul industry to new heights by resuscitating the failed resettlement project. As a resettlement farm, conditions at Voightsgrund, have deteriorated to such an extent that it will cost the taxpayers millions just to bring it back to normal standards.

This seems to be the norm at the majority of resettlement farms in the South with no one taking responsibility for the ruins which were once profitable show farms. In the case of Voightsgrund, several projects were unsuccessfully introduced and that included plans for aquaculture projects.

“When I joined the Hardap Regional Council in 2010, a portion of Voightsgrund was already allocated to the council. I learnt that the portion with the farmstead was allocated to the council. I also learnt that the portion which was allocated to the council was rented out for development purposes, while some other families were resettled on the rest of the farm,” former chief regional officer, Yvonne Boois said.

According to Boois, development partners indicated their interest to start with an agriculture project, but the council and the then Hardap Governor, Katrina Hanse-Himarwa, objected to it.
She confirmed the dilapidated state of buildings at the farmstead, saying the destruction of the infrastructure happened over the past years.

Chairman of the Hardap Regional Council, Jeremia van Neel, said the portion of Voightsgrund, which was supposed to belong to the council, was only transferred from the Ministry of Land Reform about five months ago.

“Since the farm fell under the ministry, it was difficult to start something concrete, with the Regional Council that would also benefit from it. However, Nakara approached us with a proposal to use the farmstead portion to boost the Karakul industry. The council and the ministry already gave the green light for this project. It is only the terms of reference that need be completed, but I am hopeful that the project will kick off soon,” Van Neel explained.

He also expressed his disappointment with the vandalism that took place at Voightgrund, saying Nakara indicated that they will again bring the farm up to standard.

The plans are that between 2 000 to 3 000 Karakul sheep will be accommodated at the farm, with about 130 employees who will have the responsibility to boost the sheep industry in Namibia.

2022:
Nothing came out of grandiose plans. Ruins stay idle and deteriorate further.
