Wild Eastern Europe - Cycling Serbia & Bulgaria || Ten Million Turns [Ep. 3]

Our third episode of our world bicycle trip! We have now reached a for us unknown section of Europe, the wild but beautiful Balkan countries. We have our first big thunderstorm and mountain pass to climb, and the wind is not in our favour. Enough ingredients for a good adventure!

----

We are Tom & Sabine, also known as Ten Million Turns. In March 2019 we left our cozy home in Amsterdam and embarked on the trip of our lifetime. A tent as our home, two bicycles as our means of transport, and a destination on the other side of the world: New Zealand! Cycling the world resulted in a daily dose of adventure, wonderful meetings with local people and awe-inspiring views. Slow travel is pure travel, we believe! Our videos show a small highlight of our experiences during our world bicycle tour.

Enjoy!

From Berkovitsa to Kom peak (2016m) (28.06.2020)

Kom Peak (Bulgarian: връх Ком, vrah Kom) or Golyam Kom (Голям Ком, Big Kom) is a peak in the western Balkan Mountains, located in western Bulgaria, not far from the Serbian border. The peak is 2,016 metres high and lies south of the town of Berkovitsa, of which it is a traditional symbol. Kom, along with the lower peaks Sreden Kom (Middle Kom) and Malak Kom (Little Kom) to the east, form a west-east elevation with a round grassy ridge, a steep rocky northern slope and a slant grassy southern slope. Looking north, one can see Berkovitsa and the surrounding fields, as well as Montana and the Ogosta Reservoir some 30 kilometres away.

The peak inspired national writer Ivan Vazov to create the poem On Kom. In his honour, a bas-relief plaque bearing his image and excerpts from the poem has been installed on the peak. Kom also marks the start of the Bulgarian section of the European walking route E3, also known as the Kom–Emine path along the main ridge of the Balkan Mountains, as well as the eponymous off-road race.

There are several climbing routes to the summit, such as from the Kom chalet (two-hour climb), from the Petrohan Pass (taking 3 hours 30 minutes to reach the peak), from the villages of Komshtitsa and Gintsi (3 hours away).

The Nishava River, a major tributary of the South Morava, originates east of Kom Peak, as does the Visochitsa. Along with Midzhur, Kom is among the highest and best known peaks of the western Balkan Mountains. A Bulgarian brand of mineral water is branded after Kom. The peak is part of the 100 Tourist Sites of Bulgaria, together with the museum of ethnography in Berkovitsa. There are several ski pistes descending from the peak.

According to Wikipedia 'It was originally founded as First Bulgarian Stock Exchange on 10 October 1991 as a joint stock company. As of November 2011, the total market capitalization of the Bulgarian Stock Exchange is around $8.5 bln. Also 'As of May 2010, the Bulgarian Stock Exchange is 44% owned by the Bulgarian government, which is looking for potential worldwide investors, some of them being the Frankfurt Stock Exchange, Athens Stock Exchange, OMX, the Prague Stock Exchange, etc.'

The meander of the Arda River and the Devil's Bridge, Bulgaria/

The meanders of Arda are a must-see tourist destination if you are traveling in the Eastern Rhodopes. Over the years, they have become a favorite place of photographers and travelers and for good reason. The views that you can enjoy are really breathtaking, and the road to them is also very interesting and picturesque. The reason for the creation of the unique bends is the pronounced mountainous character of the river.
Zavoya - the most famous meander of the Kardzhali dam.
Undoubtedly the most famous, and perhaps the most beautiful meander is located between the villages of Star Chitak and Ribartsi. The place is also called Bend or Horseshoe of the dam Kardzhali because of the U -shaped curve that the water makes. In fact, it is formed by various tributaries of the dam. On the left is the Arda River, which flows a few kilometers higher, and on the right is the Berkovitsa River. It is a curious fact that on the opposite rocky peninsula are the remains of the fortress Patmos.

The Devil's Bridge is a bridge on the Arda River in the Municipality of Ardino, Kardzhali District.
It is located in a picturesque gorge about 10 kilometers northwest of the town of Ardino, near the village of Dyadovtsi and not far from the village of Latinka.
The bridge is located at 420 meters above sea level in a gorge, surrounded on both sides by steep slopes, reaching 800 meters above sea level. Its length is 56 meters, width - 3.5 meters, three-arched, and the arches of its side ribs are made holes with semicircular arches for water drainage. The height of the central vault is 11 - 12 meters, and on the edge is preserved a stone railing with a height of 12 cm.
The bridge was built in the early 16th century by order of Sultan Selim I as part of a road connecting the Upper Thracian Plain with White Sea Thrace and the Aegean Sea. In place of today's bridge there was once a Roman bridge, part of the important ancient road Via Ignatius, connecting the White Sea and Thrace through the Makaza Pass. By order of Sultan Selim I, the bridge was rebuilt to continue trade links between the two geographical areas. He was known as Shaitan Kyupriya.
