Bengkulu is the capital of the Indonesian province of Bengkulu. The city is the second largest city on the west coast of Sumatra Island after Padang. Previously this area is under the influence of the kingdom of Inderapura and the Sultanate of Banten. The city also became the exile of Sukarno during the period of 1939 - 1942. It covers an area of 151.70 km2 and had a population of 308,544 at the 2010 Census and 373,591 at the 2020 Census. The city is also the largest city of Bengkulu Province.
#Bengkulu is a province of Indonesia. It is located on the southwest coast of #Sumatra. It was formed on 18 November 1968 by separating out the former Bengkulu Residency area from the province of South Sumatra under Law No. 9 of 1967 and was finalized by Government Regulation No. 20 of 1968. Spread over 19,813 km2, it is bordered by the provinces of West Sumatra to the north, Jambi to the northeast, Lampung to the southeast, and South Sumatra to the east, and by the Indian Ocean to the northwest, south, southwest, and west.
Bengkulu is the 25th largest province by area; it is divided into nine regencies and the city of Bengkulu, the capital and largest city. Bengkulu is also the 26th largest province by population in Indonesia, with 1,715,518 inhabitants at the 2010 Census and 2,010,670 at the 2020 Census. According to a release by Badan Pusat Statistik, it has the eleventh highest Human Development Index among the provinces, with a score of about 0.744 in 2013. By 2014, the province is positioned 28th highest in gross domestic product and 20th highest in life expectancy, 70.35 years.
Bengkulu also includes offshore Mega Island and Enggano Island in the Indian Ocean. Bengkulu has 525 kilometres of coastline along the Indian Ocean on its western side, from Dusun Baru Pelokan in Muko-Muko Regency to Tebing Nasal in Kaur Regency. Bengkulu has many natural resources such as coal and gold, and has big and potential[clarification needed] geothermal resources. However, it is less developed than other provinces in Sumatra.

Di wilayah Bengkulu pernah berdiri kerajaan-kerajaan yang berdasarkan etnis seperti Kerajaan Sungai Serut, Kerajaan Selebar, Kerajaan Pat Petulai, Kerajaan Balai Buntar, Kerajaan Sungai Lemau, Kerajaan Sekiris, Kerajaan Gedung Agung, dan Kerajaan Marau Riang. Di bawah Kesultanan Banten, mereka menjadi vazal.
Sebagian wilayah Bengkulu, juga pernah berada di bawah kekuasaan Kerajaan Inderapura semenjak abad ke-17.
British East India Company (EIC) sejak 1685 mendirikan pusat perdagangan lada. Bencoolen/Coolen yang berasal dari bahasa inggris Cut Land yang berarti tanah patah wilayah ini adalah wilayah patahan gempa bumi yang paling aktif di dunia dan kemudian gudang penyimpanan di tempat yang sekarang menjadi Kota Bengkulu. Saat itu, ekspedisi EIC dipimpin oleh Ralph Ord dan William Cowley untuk mencari pengganti pusat perdagangan lada setelah Pelabuhan Banten jatuh ke tangan VOC, dan EIC dilarang berdagang di sana. Traktat dengan Kerajaan Selebar pada tanggal 12 Juli 1685 mengizinkan Inggris untuk mendirikan benteng dan berbagai gedung perdagangan. Benteng York didirikan tahun 1685 di sekitar muara Sungai Serut.
Sejak tahun 1713, dibangun benteng Marlborough (selesai 1719) yang hingga sekarang masih tegak berdiri. Namun, perusahaan ini lama kelamaan menyadari tempat itu tidak menguntungkan karena tidak bisa menghasilkan lada dalam jumlah mencukupi.
Sejak dilaksanakannya Perjanjian London pada tahun 1824, Bengkulu diserahkan ke Belanda, dengan imbalan Malaka sekaligus penegasan atas kepemilikan Tumasik/Singapura dan Pulau Belitung). Sejak perjanjian itu Bengkulu menjadi bagian dari Hindia Belanda.
Pada tahun 1930-an, Bengkulu menjadi tempat pembuangan sejumlah aktivis pendukung kemerdekaan, termasuk Sukarno. Pada masa inilah Sukarno berkenalan dengan Fatmawati yang kelak menjadi istrinya.
Setelah kemerdekaan Indonesia, Bengkulu menjadi keresidenan dalam provinsi Sumatra Selatan. Baru sejak tanggal 18 November 1968 ditingkatkan statusnya menjadi provinsi ke-26 (termuda sebelum Timor Timur).
