Wonderful Rocks natural landmark in Bulgaria, Varna region, Dulgopol municipality, 4 km south of the village of Asparuhovo.
The natural landmark was declared on February 17, 1949. Its area is 12.5 hectares. The purpose of the declaration is the protection of the rock formations, which prohibits changes damaging the natural image of the rocks and the surrounding landscape and nature.
Wonderful Rocks are located on the shore of the Tsonevo dam, it is a set of three needle-shaped rock massifs between 15 and 40-50 meters high. The rock phenomenon was obtained as a result of the erosion action of the wind and waters of the Luda Kamchia river on the soft limestone rock. Three tunnels have been dug through the entire length of Chudni skali, through which the road between the villages of Asparuhovo and Dobromir passes. The main road connecting the cities of Provadia and Aytos, as well as the Varna-Plovdiv railway, pass nearby.

Чудните скали е природна забележителност в България, област Варна, община Дългопол, на 4 км южно от село Аспарухово.
Природната забележителност е обявена на 17 февруари 1949 г. Площта ѝ е 12,5 хектара. Целта на обявяването е опазването на скалните образувания, което забранява промени, увреждащи естествения образ на скалите и околния пейзаж и природа.
„Чудните скали“ се намират на брега на язовир „Цонево“, представлява съвкупност от три скални масива с форма на игли с височина между 15 и 40 – 50 метра. Скалният феномен е получен в резултат на действието на ерозията на вятъра и водите на р. Луда Камчия върху меката варовикова скала. През цялата дължина на Чудните скали са прокопани три тунела, през които преминава автомобилния път между селата Аспарухово и Добромир. В съседство минава главният път, свързващ градовете Провадия и Айтос, както и железопътната линия Варна–Пловдив.

В памет на четиримата на скалите е издигнат паметник. Идеята на паметника е визуално да наподобява войнишко кепе. Облицован е в червен пясъчен камък, който напомня за пролятата кръв. Години наред останките на септемврийците се съхранявали в подземие под масивния паметник. Според местните жители, вандали са разбили гробницата и са разпръснали костите. В годините на демокрацията е била разрушена и паметната плоча, но възстановена отново през 2010 година.

Episode 28. Monument Septemvriitsi, the Cross and Dark Hole cave
A monument has been erected on the rocks in memory of the four. The idea of the monument is to visually resemble a soldier's cap. It is clad in red sandstone, reminiscent of spilled blood. For years, the remains of the Septembrians were kept in a dungeon under the massive monument. According to local residents, vandals broke open the tomb and scattered the bones. During the years of democracy, the memorial plaque was also destroyed, but restored again in 2010.

Заслонът е построен е през 1938г след историческо изкачване на североизточната стена на Мальовица от алпинистите от Българския алпийски клуб - Коце Саваджиев, Георги Стоименов, Георги Ценев и Тодор Божков. Превърнал се в емблема на Лакатнишките скали, от заслона се разкрива красива панорама към Лакатник и Искърското дефиле.
През 2000 година заслонът е изцяло подновен по инициатива на местните катерачи от Планинската спасителна служба в Лакатник - Кирил Илиев, Емил Ангелов – Ментата, Иван Георгиев и шефът на местното туристическо дружество Виктор Петков. В подновяването се включват спасителите от ПСС-Лакатник, десетки туристи и жители на Лакатник.
Днес „Орлово гнездо“ е част от природен парк „Врачански Балкан“ и покрай него минава екопътека, която отвежда до пещерата „Темната дупка“ и паметника „Септемврийци“ за който ще говорим в следваащта серия.

Episode 27. Alpine shelter Eagle's Nest above Lakatnik
The shelter was built in 1938 after a historic ascent of the northeast wall of Maliovitsa by climbers from the Bulgarian Alpine Club - Kotse Savadzhiev, Georgi Stoimenov, Georgi Tsenev and Todor Bozhkov. Having become an emblem of the Lakatnik rocks, the shelter reveals a beautiful panorama of Lakatnik and the Iskar Gorge.
In 2000, the shelter was completely renewed at the initiative of the local climbers from the Mountain Rescue Service in Lakatnik - Kiril Iliev, Emil Angelov - Mentata, Ivan Georgiev and the head of the local tourist association Viktor Petkov. Rescuers from PSS-Lakatnik, dozens of tourists and residents of Lakatnik are involved in the renewal.
Today, the Eagle's Nest is part of the Vrachanski Balkan nature park, and an eco-trail runs along it that leads to the Dark Hole cave and the Septemvriitsi Monument, which we will talk about in the next series.

SEEP is the South Eastern European Platform of ESN. An event intended to share knowledge about ESN and help to the integration of ESN members of different sections and countries. Единствената пустиня в Източна Европа се намира в България, на 20 км. западно от Варна. Това е местността Побити камъни. Все още няма сигурно обяснение как се е образувал този уникален природен феномен. Едната теория твърди, че тези каменни стълбове са древни коралови организми. Другата теория обяснява произхода им с призматичното изветряне на скалите. Предполага се, че са се образували преди около 50 мил. г. Интересното е, че повечето от колоните са изправени, сякаш забити в земята. Оттук и названието им - Побити камъни. Повечето от колоните са кухи отвътре. Тук могат да се видят и редки растителни видове като планинска роза, флокс и различни кактуси.

Natural phenomenon “Stone Forest” is better known with its Bulgarian name “Pobiti kamani” which could be translated as “stones beaten into the ground”. Seven large and several separate small groups are located on the north and south from the Beloslav Lake. These are numerous limestone pillars as high as 10 m, hollow or solid cylinders, truncated cones and single rocks and cliffs. Several hypotheses about the origin of the phenomenon have been developed. The scientists describe designing of the structures by mechanical acting of the environmental factors (sea waves, wind, rain) or precipitation of carbonate from infiltrated ground waters (stalactite mode of formation), coral complexes, algal bio constructed build-ups (bioherms), petrified forest and natural gas seepages so called the bubbling reefs.
We still cannot say which of these hypotheses give the best explanation of the origin, but the idea that they are human creation is excluded.

If mountain climbing with proper equipment is tough under the best of circumstances, Matt finds out how much more challenging the slopes were with antiquated tools a half-century ago at the Mountaineering Museum in Mestia honoring Mikhail Khergiani.

The cave Magura - Bulgaria
The Magura cave is located in Northwestern Bulgaria, just 17 km from the town of Belogradchik. It is one of the longest caves in the country - the total length of uncovered passages is over 2500 m. It consists of one main gallery, pointing southeast-northwest and three side passageways. The cave-chambers are quite spacious. Each of them is over 200 m long, more than 50 m wide and over 20 m high. Walking through these galleries you will see a display of marvelous formations - stalactites, stalagmites, stalctones, cave pearls, cave milkway. Some of them are impressive both with their beauty and size. The Big Stalactone is over 20m high and has a diameter of 4m at its base. The Fallen Pine is the biggest stalagmite in all Bulgarian caves explored till now. It is over 11m long and has a diameter of 6m at its base.
Geological analysis show that the formation of the Magura cave started 15 million years ago. In fact, in one of the halls were discovered unique pre-historical drawings carved into the stone and painted with bat guano. The painted figures represent dancing women, dancing and hunting men, disguised men, large variety of animals, the Sun, other stars, instruments of labour, plants etc. The drawing date from different epochs - The Epupaleolith, The Neolith, The Eneolith, the beginning of The Early Bronze Age. The Solar calendar from The Late Eneolith and some later additions, made during The Early Bronze age are quite accurate. Through pictures information about religous events and feasts along with their symbols and particular meanings were saved.
