BELMONTE, vila do distrito de Castelo Branco, localiza-se nas fraldas da Serra da Estrela e terra onde nasceu o navegador Pedro Álvares Cabral. O concelho de Belmonte é geminado com as cidades de Santa Cruz Cabrália, Belmonte e São Vicente , todas do Brasil, Mézière de França, Rosh Pina de Israel e com a cidade portuguesa de Santarém. A história da vila remonta ao sec. XII e foi aqui que no sec. XV se fixou uma importante comunidade judaica. Com um vasto património arquitectónico são dignos de visita, para além de outros: o Castelo de Belmonte, a Igreja de S.Tiago e Panteão dos Cabrais, as Capelas de Stº António e do Calvário, o Pelourinho, os Museus Judaico e do Azeite e a Igreja Matriz. À saída da vila, na direcção da cidade da Guarda, somos surpreendidos por uma edificação no mínimo enigmática, a Torre de Centum Cellas, importante monumento único na Península Ibérica, que pela sua grandiosidade e beleza merece a nossa visita.*carl0spais*2013
BELMONTE, village, district of Castelo Branco, is located in the foothills of the Serra da Estrela and the birthplace of the navigator Pedro Alvares Cabral. The municipality of Belmonte is twinned with the cities of Santa Cruz Cabrália, Belmonte and San Vicente: Brazil, Meziere: France, Rosh Pina: Israel and the Portuguese city of Santarem. The history of the village dates back to the 12th Century and it was here that in the 15th Century has set an important Jewish community. With a vast architectural heritage worth visiting: the Belmonte Castle, the Pantheon, the Church of S.Tiago Granary, the Chapels of St. Anthony and Calvary, the Pelourinho, the Jewis Museum and Oil Museum and the Mother Church. Belmonte | Aldeias Históricas de Portugal
Belmonte é uma das 12 Aldeias Históricas de Portugal.De traçado ovalado irregular, o castelo de Belmonte é um dos monumentos, mais emblemáticos da Vila, a sua fundação deve-se a D.Afonso III, que em 1258 autoriza o Bispo D.Egas Fafes a construir uma Torre em Belmonte. Após a defenição das fronteiras com o Tratado de Alcanizes, o castelo de Belmonte numa segunda linha de defesa, perde a sua função militar, pelo que em 1446, D.Afonso V doa o castelo a Fernão Cabral I, para aí construir a sua residência.
A Capela de Santiago é um monumento de traço românico que foi sofrendo modificações ao longo dos tempos, tendo elementos góticos e maneiristas. A frontaria de esta igreja data do século XVIII. Dentro da igreja, pode observar-se uma capela, mandada edificar em 1240, por intermédio de D.Maria Gil e uma Pietá do século XIV que, segundo José Saramago, é a peça mais admirável desta igreja. Do lado contrário, é possível observar frescos, de pelo menos duas épocas. Já na capela-mor encontram-se vestigios de um tríptico constituído por figuras que representam Nossa Senhora, S.Tiago (orago) e S.Pedro (que muitos dizem ser uma representação de Pedro Alvares Cabral).
Em ligação com esta igreja, está o Panteão dos Cabrais que ainda estava em construção em 1483, onde é possível observar túmulos de diversos elementos da família Cabral, inclusive de Pedro Alvares Cabral.
Situada num dos caminhos portugueses de peregrinação a Compostela, a Via da Estrela, que se encontra sinalizado em Belmonte, que aproveitaria a antiga via romana que ligava Mérida a Braga, a Igreja de Santiago seria um local, no qual os peregrinos encontrariam conforto espiritual no decurso da sua jornada. No Largo do Castelo podem ainda obervar-se as capelas de Sto.António e do Calvário.

ENGLISH: Belmonte is a municipality in the district of Castelo Branco, Portugal. The population in 2011 was 6,859, in an area of 118.76 km². Belmonte is also the birthplace of Pedro Álvares Cabral, the navigator who discovered the land of Vera Cruz, now known as Brasil. Located in the Church of Santa Maria is the iconic statue of Nossa Senhora da Esperança (Our Lady of Hope), which Cabral took with him on his voyage. Until 1834, the statue was held by the Monastery of Nossa Senhora da Esperança. The former religious facility has been adapted for use as a modern boutique hotel. Belmonte is home to the last remaining community of marranos in Portugal (known as the Belmonte Jews). They officially returned to Judaism in the 1970s and opened a synagogue in 1996.

Pedro Álvares Cabral, nasceu em Belmonte, 1467 ou 1468, foi um fidalgo, comandante militar, navegador e explorador português, creditado como o descobridor do Brasil no ano 1500. A vila de Belmonte teve foral em 1199.
