Saarbrücken is the capital and largest city of the state of Saarland, Germany. Saarbrücken is Saarland's administrative, commercial and cultural centre. he city is situated next to the French border at the heart of the metropolitan area of Saarland. Saarbrücken was created in 1909 by the merger of three towns, Saarbrücken, St. Johann, and Malstatt-Burbach. It used to be the industrial and transport centre of the Saar coal basin. Products included iron and steel, sugar, beer, pottery, optical instruments, machinery, and construction materials.
Historic landmarks in the city include the stone bridge across the Saar (1546), the Gothic church of St. Arnual, the 18th-century Saarbrücken Castle, and the old part of the town, the Sankt Johanner Markt (Market of St. Johann). Twice in the 20th century Saarbrücken was separated from Germany: in 1920–35 as capital of the Territory of the Saar Basin and in 1947–56 as capital of the Saar Protectorate.
Some of the closest cities are Trier, Luxembourg, Nancy, Metz, Kaiserslautern, Karlsruhe and Mannheim. Saarbrücken is connected by the city's public transport network to the town of Sarreguemines in France, and to the neighboring town of Völklingen, where the old steel works were the first industrial monument to be declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1994 — the Völklinger Hütte. The city is served by Saarbrücken Airport (SCN), and since June 2007 ICE high speed train services along the LGV Est line provide high speed connections to Paris from Saarbrücken Hauptbahnhof. Saarbrücken's Saarbahn (modelled on the Karlsruhe model light rail) crosses the French–German border, connecting to the French city of Sarreguemines.

Saarbrücken (or Saarbrucken 2023) îs the capital of the state Saarland in Germany. Saarbrucken means the bridge over the river Saar in German. The city is located next to the French border. Welche Vorurteile kennst du zu Saarbrücken? Die Stadt soll düster, traurig und eher nicht so spannend sein? ✔ Über die Hauptstadt des Saarlandes gibt es viele Vorurteile. Ich habe auch welche. Um herauszufinden, was richtig und was falsch ist, schaue ich mir selbst einige Saarbrücker Sehenswürdigkeiten an. Meine ersten Impressionen von der saarländischen Landeshauptstadt? ✔ Ich finde, Saarbrücken hat viel weniger touristische Power als Hochburgen wie Berlin, München oder Heidelberg. Logisch ist auch, dass die „Saarstadt“ mit weniger als 200.000 Einwohnern nicht mit der einen oder anderen deutschen Metropole „mithalten“ kann. Trotzdem kann ich in Saarbrücken genug Sehenswürdigkeiten finden, um einen Wochenend-Städtetrip zu füllen. ✔ Um an dieser Stelle ein paar wenige zu nennen: eine Führung durch den Saarbrücker Rathausturm, das Saarbrücker Schloss und die unterirdischen „Höhlengänge“. Merzig park, in the heart of the town, provides a wide range of ways to linger and relax for a while. The large salt bath towards the back of the park is not only an oasis of well-being in hot temperatures – its spa water and the minerals it contains can relieve the symptoms of respiratory complaints. Bietzen spa water is groundwater between 5,000 and 10,000 years old. This is what you will find in the salt bath. As you walk through the park you will find countless places to sit down along the pathways, with lovely views across the park. The giant water fountain in the centre of the park is one of its most eye-catching features.
Large mature trees provide shade and give the park a lovely calm ambience. Many of the trees are decades old. Unusual tree species such as redwood or the tulip tree give the park an impressive appearance and harmonise perfectly with the many large flower beds and lawns. The park is also the perfect meeting place for children, with plenty of space to run around, climb or just relax. Large playgrounds, some of them newly built, provide hours of unforgettable enjoyment for young visitors to the park. One very special feature is the disabled-friendly playground, with enough space and a safe environment for wheelchairs. The large “mud pit” provides hours of fun for all ages. If you feel the urge to do something more physical, the new sports equipment for young and old demands stamina and persistence. The large boules court is a great place to spend a few pleasant, sociable hours with good friends. When you’ve had enough of relaxing in the park, a short underpass takes you directly to the nearby Saar, where you can enjoy the riverside and the great views of the Merzig marina. (Google Searched)

Overnight in Meersburg, Germany - Southern Germany's Bodensee Lakeside Hidden Gem!
Join us as we kick off our biggest series yet! A road trip around Europe where we visit 5 countries for our 5 year anniversary! First up, Meersburg, Germany!

It's our 5 year anniversary! To celebrate, we made our way from Tucson, AZ to Europe to visit 5 different countries by train, plane and automobile!
In this first episode, we made our way through a hectic and long travel day. Our first flight took us from Tucson, AZ to San Francisco, CA with a 4.5 hour layover; enough time to grab dinner and relax. The second flight took us from SFO airport to Zurich, Switzerland. Once we arrive in Switzerland after a 10.5 hour flight, we picked up our rental car from Enterprise: a 3 cylinder Renault Clio - what would become essentially home base for a week.
After picking up the car, we drove about an hour and a half to Konstanz to take the ferry across the Bodensee to Meersburg, Germany - a quaint/quiet lakeside town with half-timbered houses/buildings, and a well preserved historic castle at the heart of town. Our first hotel of the trip: Hotel Rauchfang - a medieval themed boutique hotel that had excellent attention to detail and a charming atmosphere.
After checking in to the hotel, we settled in, freshened up, and made our way out for a sunset stroll through the town and along the lakeside. We were greeted by live acoustic music just before the hill to the entrance of the castle - Burg Meersburg. After exploring the area around the castle, we made our way over to Gutsschänke Meersburg for dinner. This place is not only special for its excellent views of the Bodensee, but also their excellent food and wine made from the grapes grown in the vineyard on the hillside below the restaurant. An excellent introduction to the fresh and flavorful food of Europe, and a perfect way to end our first evening in Germany!
Stay tuned for future episodes as we make our way to Fussen, Germany to explore Castle Nueschwanstein, down to Austria for a night in a 12th century castle (and King Ludwig's favorite vacation spot), over to Venice, Italy to stay in a 15th century palace, then across to Zermatt to see the Matterhorn, and finally up to Paris.
