The city of the singing fish! Batticaloa, Sri Lanka
This week we finally explore things to do in Batticaloa, the eastern capital of Sri Lanka whilst staying at the luxurious Uga Bay resort in Pasikuda.
Unlike most of the coastal towns in Sri Lanka Batticaloa is not heavily reliant on tourism and it is evident by the lack of tourist activities that we came about exploring the city.
nevertheless thanks to some local insight and hook ups we got cover some of the main highlight of the city by Boat and visit a Handloom factory during our stay.

Batticaloa Lighthouse and Lagoon Park, Popular Travel Place to Visit in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka
Batticaloa Muttuwaran Lighthouse is one of the most beautiful attractions in Batticaloa along with its Lagoon Park, which is also called Eco Park. The Lighthouse was built in 1913 by the British when Sri Lanka was under the British rule. It is 28 meters tall and located about 5km distance from Batticaloa town.

The surroundings are quite fascinating and it gives you a feeling of the eastern side in this country. I went there in the morning and the weather was wonderful and wasn't too harsh. Either visit the place in the morning or at evening as afternoon can be difficult for you to explore. There are so many coconut trees in a one side and on the other side, you can gaze at the beautiful and famous lagoon.
The reason why this lighthouse is called as Muttuwaran is, the locals call this as where the lagoon meets the sea where the name is translated as Muttuwaran.
There are many activities you can do around the lighthouse and some of them are, taking boat rides around the beach, seeing environment learning center library and lagoon viewing hall and spend a leisurely time at the eco-park to have a picnic. You can also go to the top of bird viewing tower to see the surroundings.
The area is ideal for cycle riding and walking, especially in the evening. One thing I noticed is, the place is not overcrowded and you have a pleasant time. For a photographer, this is a great place to see and capture both the sunrise and sunset.

மட்டக்களப்பு (ஆங்கில மொழி: Batticaloa, சிங்களம்: මඩකලපුව) இலங்கையின் கிழக்குக் கரையோரம் அமைந்துள்ள முக்கிய நகரங்களுள் ஒன்று. இது நாட்டின் ஒன்பது மாகாணங்களுள் ஒன்றான கிழக்கு மாகாணத்திலுள்ள மிகப் பெரிய நகரமும், மட்டக்களப்பு நிர்வாக மாவட்டத்தின் தலைநகரமும் ஆகும். தமிழ் மக்களைப் பெரும்பான்மையாகக் கொண்ட மட்டக்களப்பு மாவட்டத்தில் பெருமளவில் முஸ்லிம் மக்களும் வாழ்கின்றனர். மட்டக்களப்பானது மீன் பாடும் தேன் நாடு என அழைக்கப்படுகின்றது. இதன் எல்லைகளாகத் திருகோணமலை, பொலன்னறுவை, அம்பாறை ஆகிய மாவட்டங்கள் அமைகின்றன. கொழும்பிலிருந்து இது 301 கி.மீ. தொலைவில் அமைந்துள்ளது.
மேலிருந்து இடதுபுறமாக: கல்லடிப் பாலம், மட்டக்களப்பு வெளிச்ச வீடு, மட்டக்களப்புக் கோட்டை, மட்டக்களப்பு வாவி, பேருந்து தரிப்பிடம், மீன்பிடிப் படகுகள், உன்னிச்சைக் குளம்
கல்லடிப் பாலத்திலிருந்து (லேடி மன்னிங் பாலம்) சப்தமற்ற இரவு நேர முழுமதி தினங்களில் அவதானிக்கும் போது ஓர் இன்னிசை கேட்பதாகக் கூறப்படுகிறது. இது ஊரிகளினுள் நீர் புகுந்தெழுவதால் ஏற்படும் இசையென நம்பப்படுகின்றது. இதனை இலக்கியங்களில் 'நீரரமகளீர் இசைக்கும் இசை' என வர்ணிக்கப்படுகிறது. ஆயினும் மீன்கள்தான் இசையெழுப்பின என்ற கருத்தும் பிரதேசவாசிகளிடம் காணப்படுகிறது. இதன் காரணமாக மட்டக்களப்பு 'மீன் பாடும் தேன் நாடு' எனப் பன்னெடுங் காலமாக அழைக்கப்படுகின்றது.
கத்தோலிக்க குருவான அருட்தந்தை லாங் (Fr. Lang) என்பவர் 'இவ் மீனிசையை' ஒலிப்பதிவு செய்து இலங்கை ஒலிபரப்புக் கூட்டுத்தாபனம் ஊடாக 1960களில் ஒலிபரப்பினார் என்று சொல்லப்படுகிறது.
மீனிசை பற்றிப் பல கருத்துக்கள் இருந்தபோதிலும் மட்டக்களப்பானது மீன் பாடும் தேன் நாடு என்றே நோக்கப்படுகிறது. பல மட்டக்களப்புசார் அரச திணைக்களங்கள், பாடசாலைகள், கழகங்கள், நிறுவனங்கள் போன்றவற்றின் இலச்சினைகள் மீன் அல்லது கடற்கன்னி உருவம் கொண்டதாகக் காணப்படுவது மட்டக்களப்பிற்கும் 'மீன் பாட்டிற்கும்' உள்ள தொடர்பைக் காட்டுகிறது.
Batticaloa (English: Batticaloa, Sinhala: Batkalapuwa) is one of the major cities on the east coast of Sri Lanka. It is the largest city in the Eastern Province, one of the country's nine provinces, and the capital of the Batticaloa Administrative District. A large number of Muslims also live in the Batticaloa district, which has a Tamil majority population. Batticaloa is known as the Honey Country of Singing Fish. It is bordered by the districts of Trincomalee, Polonnaruwa and Amparai. It is 301 km from Colombo. Located far away.

An Innis is said to be heard when observing from Galladip Bridge (Lady Manning Bridge) on silent night full moon days. It is believed to be the music caused by water seeping into the Uri. It has been described in the literature as 'the music of the waters'. However, there is also an opinion among the locals that the fish made music. Because of this, Batticaloa has long been known as the 'Singing Honey Country'.
It is said that Fr. Lang, a Catholic priest, recorded 'Ev Meenisai' and broadcast it through the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation in the 1960s.
Despite many opinions about seafood, Batticaloa is considered to be the honey country of singing fish. The logos of many Batticaloa-based government departments, schools, clubs, institutions, etc. are seen to be fish or mermaids, showing the connection between Batticaloa and the 'fish bowl'.

BATTICALOA, SRI LANKA - After visiting Kandy and Central Sri Lanka, we drove to the East coast of Sri Lanka, and first to Batticaloa, a wonderful city surrounded by lagoons. Ruzaina arranged for us to meet up with the Sri Lanka Special Forces to cook lunch and eat in their mess hall, but it turned out to be more of an adventure than just that!
We arrived to the Special Forces base camp, and they were already cooking the meal for lunch. But also our plan for the day was to buy a fish and cook a big fish, so the Captain called his fisherman friend, and he had a special type of shark (which is commonly eaten in Sri Lanka) and said it was his favorite. So we ended up getting the shark to cook and share with the entire Special Forces unit. We ended up missing the main lunch, but we had lunch in the General's office instead with the delicious mix of local dishes and the addition of the shark curry. It was a privilege to have this opportunity.
Sri Lankan Batticaloa food - In the evening we were invited to a local home in Batticaloa to eat a typical regional Batticaloa Sri Lankan food meal. The meat blew me away with the flavors and ingredients, and it was my first time to eat mountain knotgrass, which was delicious.
