Raby Castle Darlington 4k - Near Barnard Castle

Raby Castle is a medieval castle located near Staindrop in County Durham, England, among 200 acres of deer park. It was built by John Neville, 3rd Baron Neville de Raby, between approximately 1367 and 1390. Cecily Neville, the mother of the Kings Edward IV and Richard III, was born here.

Whilst originally built as a Viking settlement of King Cnut, known as 'Rabi' in the 11th century, the Castle as it stands today was built for the mighty dynasty of the Nevills in the 14th Century. A great fortress standing proud and defiant, it's history rolls back almost a thousand years.

Barnard Castle: Explore Guy de Balliol's Medieval Castle in County Durham, England

I don't remember how I made my list of places to visit, but I know I didn't know much about any of them before visiting. Some I didn't know much about until I started making these videos. Barnard Castle is one of those places.

Mom and I drove all around Barnard Castle town looking for the castle. Eventually we had to stop and ask someone. Located behind a church the castle doesn't look like much on the approach. Once inside it is really just another ruined castle, but there is something appealing about it. We took a ridiculous number of pictures and spent more time than we expected there, partly because of the view of the River Tees.

The earliest history of the area is unknown except that there was a Norman ring-work fortress in the location (known as Scar Top) of the current castle, which was built by Guy de Balliol from 1095 to 1125. Guy had been granted the lordship of Gainford by William Rufus. This area had been held by the Bishops of Durham, and there was a longstanding dispute over ownership and tax rights. Guy's nephew Bernard and Bernard's son Bernard II extended the building. It is Bernard for whom the castle and later town are named, though it is sometimes referred to as Barney.

The castle was besieged by King Alexander II of Scotland in 1216, but was held by the Balliol family until 1296 when John de Balliol was deposed as king of Scotland. Then it passed to the Bishop of Durham.

Around 1300 King Edward I granted Barnard Castle to the Beauchamp Earl of Warwick. In the 15th century it passed by marriage to the Neville family. During the War of the Roses in 1477 Richard, Duke of Gloucester (Richard III) took the castle and made it his favorite residence. The Nevilles still held the castle and continued to improve it.

Charles Neville, 6th Earl of Westmoreland, was attainted for his leading role in the Rising of the North and his lands were seized. Barnard Castle and Raby Castle were sold to Sir Henry Vane in 1626. Vane made Raby his primary residence and Barnard Castle was largely dismantled so the stone could be used for the improvement of Raby.

Motorhome Trip To Barnard Castle

Motorhome Trip To Barnard Castle

Our first trip in our Adria Matrix Motorhome takes us to The Camping and Caravanning Club Site at Barnard Castle, County Durham. We could not have picked a better caravan site for our first trip. The site was immaculate, there was a fantastic walk to Barnard Castle itself and the town did not disappoint. There were a variety of shops to visit, pubs, takeaways butchers and cafes. We visited several and had a look at Barnard Castle itself. This is owned by English Heritage.
The Motorhome is absolutely fantastic, a huge thanks to John at Cara Motorhomes and to Scorpion Automotive and Maypole for assisting with security.

Durham (in County Durham) England - a 3 day trip

A 3 night trip to Durham including the Norman Church of Christ, Blessed Mary the Virgin and St Cuthbert of Durham (usually known as Durham Cathedral) which is the seat of the Anglican bishop of Durham. The Bishopric dates from 995, with the present cathedral being founded in AD 1093. The cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage site along with nearby Durham Castle, which faces it acrossPalace Green. The trip also included 2 lovely walks, each about 5 miles and mostly flat, one to the south and the other to the north of the city provided by the Durham Tourist Information Centre. The background music is Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D minor, OP.125 - Molto vivace played by the Boston Symphony Orchestra conductor Alexander Rahbari

Bowes Museum, Barnard Castle, Teesdale, County Durham. 08/07/2021.

The Bowes Museum has a nationally renowned art collection and is situated in the town of Barnard Castle, Teesdale, County Durham, England.

The museum contains paintings by El Greco, Francisco Goya, Canaletto, Jean-Honoré Fragonard and François Boucher, together with a sizable collection of decorative art, ceramics, textiles, tapestries, clocks and costumes, as well as older items from local history. The early works of French glassmaker Émile Gallé were commissioned by Joséphine, wife of the founder John Bowes. A great attraction is the 18th-century Silver Swan automaton, which periodically preens itself, looks round and appears to catch and swallow a fish.

Castles with Claire: Barnard Castle

Now that English Heritage is open again, we thought we would make a trip over to Barnard Castle to visit the Castle itself!

Great family day out - our grandaughter Claire is obsessed with castles, so we thought we would take her to Barnard Castle - you can pre-book a slot, and it is easy to social distance in these strange times.

Hopefully you can see that historical sites can also be lots of fun for small children. Eye tests may have been involved...

A big shout out to Stephen from English Heritage, one of the the nicest members of staff we have ever met.
