Azerbaijan is known for having nine of the 11 defined ecological zones. Much of the country is temperate year-round. Nation-wide the average temperature for the year is 14-15°C (57-59°F). The Caucasus Mountains protect the country from the Arctic air masses that affect Russia in winter while the Caspian Sea shields it from the hot, dry air of Central Asia in the summer.

Cabbage, grape leaves, and eggplant wrapped meat (kelem, yarpaq, badimjan - dolmasi), kabab (kebab), rice with different variety of toppings (plov - It is said that plov is the king of Azerbaijani cuisine), gutabs and meatballs (kufta) are some of the several specialties of Azerbaijan.

Some local drinks include ayran (a yogurt drink based on sour milk) and sherbet (made from rose petals or saffron). There are also different sorts of quite decent wines produced from local grapes and a wide array of mineral waters from natural springs. In some areas of Azerbaijan the markets offer lemonades (limonat/dushes) made from pears or taragon.

There is a good selection of hotels in Baku, including many Western chains, but options elsewhere in the country are limited. Prices for the hotels start from USD60 and higher. Rental apartments might be a good choice as they are cheaper than hotels and sometimes are even more comfortable.

Mingachevir, Azerbaijan 23.11.2018 - Travel Video

Mingəçevir, Azərbaycan

Mingachevir is the fourth-largest city in Azerbaijan with a population of about 106,000. It's often called the city of lights because of its hydroelectric power station on the Kur River, which splits the city in half.
The current city was founded in 1948, partly by German prisoners of war captured during World War II. Mingechevir is also home to Mingachevir Polytechnic Institute. The city forms an administrative division of Azerbaijan. The district is located 323 km from Baku and 17 km from the Baku-Tbilisi railway. Geographically, the region is located in the center of the republic on both sides of the Kura River.

History

The archaeological history of this area extends from the eneolith era (3000 BC) to the AD 17th century. In 1871, Adolf Berge, chairman of the Caucasus archaeological committee, gave information about the archaeological monuments of Mingachevir at the second congress of archaeologists in St Petersburg.[citation needed] wrongfully presenting Mingachevir as an ancient settlement.

After this, Mingachevir remained out of archaeologists' attention until the mid-1930s when archaeological researches resumed as part of the construction of the hydroelectric power station. In 1935, researches under the leadership of Prof. Pakhomov revealed two ancient settlements and cemeteries, which were composed of various types of graves. Unfortunately, World War II prevented the research from being completed.

The construction of the hydroelectric power station started immediately after the war. This marked the start of systematic and planned research of Mingachevir as an ancient settlement. Archaeological excavations were carried out from April 1946 to August 1953 by a group of archaeologists headed by S. M. Qaziyev in connection with the construction of the Mingachevir hydroelectric power station under a decision by the Supreme Board of the Azerbaijani Academy of Sciences. Over 20,000 historical monuments – graves and tumuli, means of production, things related to daily life, jewellery etc., which reflected historical periods in chronological sequence, were found during the excavations.

Most ancient written monuments in Caucasian Albanian alphabet and other archaeological finds proved that Mingachevir was a 5,000-year-old settlement. The majority of these finds are currently exhibited in the Azerbaijani Historical Museum, while part of them is held at the Mingachevir Historical Museum.

Historical sources indicate that a fierce battle took place between the powerful army of Roman commander Pompey and the army of Albanian governor Oris just on the territory of the current dam on the bank of the River Kur in the 1st century BC. Historical facts also prove that the ancient Silk Road ran via Mingachevir.

Renowned Turkish traveller Evliya Çelebi, who lived in the 17th century AD, wrote about Mingachevir and described it as a large settlement on the right bank of the River Kur near the Bozdag Mountain. According to him, several mosques, workshops manufacturing fibre silk and silk cloth, bathhouses etc. were operating in this settlement. The road passing from there used to be called the road of the messenger. The road of the messenger connected camelcase and trade roads to Middle East countries and Azerbaijani towns like Saki, Qabala, Samaxi, Barda, Beylaqan and others.

A great number of people came to Mingachevir from all districts in Azerbaijan in connection with the construction of the Mingachevir hydroelectric power station, and a total of 20,000 people took part in the construction of this power station. About 10,000 German POWs were among those who contributed to the construction of the power station by the end of the 1940s. The most experienced specialists of the country were involved in the construction of this building site as the biggest hydroelectric power station of the then Soviet Union.

Today's Mingachevir was granted the status of city in 1948. The population of the town currently stands at 120,000 people, including 20,000 Azerbaijani settlers from Karabakh. The area of the town is 139.53 km². Mingachevir is situated 55 meters above sea level on the foothill of the southeast of the Bozdag Mountain chain and on the edge of the Mingachevir reservoir in the Kur-Araz lowland in central Azerbaijan. The town was built in a mild and warm zone and has warm and dry summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is 14 - 15 °C, highest temperature 42 °C (July–August) and the lowest temperature (January–February) -10 °C. The average annual rainfall is 250–300 mm.

The town lies on both banks of the River Kur - a 1515 km-long river, which is the biggest and longest one in the South Caucasus. (The river originates from Turkey, runs down Georgia and Azerbaijan and flows to the Caspian Sea.) Mingachevir is situated 280–300 km west of the capital of the republic, Baku.

BARDA || ANCİENT BRİDGE OVER THE RİVER TARTAR

Azərbaycanın Bərdə şəhəri ərazisində yerləşən VI–VII əsrlərə aid körpü
Tərtər çayının sağ sahilində yerləşən körpünün qədim zamanlarda uzunluğu 170 metr, eni isə 5 metr olmuşdur.
Tərtər çayı üzərində yerləşən körpü Azərbaycanda nadir tarixi abidələrdəndir ki, qalıqları bu günümüzə qədər gəlib çatmışdır. Körpü, əsasən, çay daşlarından, üst hissəsi isə qırmızı kərpicdən hörülmüşdür. Özülü çox aşırımlı dayaqlar üzərində qurulub. Tarixi körpünün istiqamətindən də görünür ki, Tərtər çayı keçmişdə indiki yatağı ilə deyil, tamam fərqli məcrada axıb.

Bridge of VI-VII centuries located in the territory of Barda city of Azerbaijan
The bridge, located on the right bank of the Tartar River, was 170 meters long and 5 meters wide in ancient times.
The bridge over the Tartar River is one of the rare historical monuments in Azerbaijan, the remains of which have survived to this day. The bridge is mainly made of river stones, and the upper part is made of red brick. The base is built on multi-span supports. It is also clear from the direction of the historical bridge that the Tartar River flowed in a completely different direction in the past, not with its present bed.

Gabala is a city situated about 225 km from Baku, at the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus mountains. The elevation of the city is 753 meters above sea level. It is a wonderful place to travel and leisure. Usually, the weather is pleasant in spring and fall, hot in summer, and cold in winter. Gabala proposes magnificent historical monuments that appear around the region and Its surroundings.

A brief history of Gabala
Gabala city’s historical background has been as colourful as its existence and has formed one of the brightest pages of Azerbaijan’s history. Referencing the name of this area, we first recall the ancient city of Gabala, which for 900 years was the capital of the ancient Caucasus of Albania (from the fourth century B.C. to the fifth century A.D.) with its wide defensive walls. the first time, the name of the old city of Gabala, located on the medieval « Silk Way » and having a history of 2400 years, was listed as «Kabalaka » as far back as in the manuscript « History of nature » by Great Philipp, Roman historian, as « Khabala » in the studies of Claudius Ptolemaic, Greek geographer at 2nd Century

For several decades, Gabala city has bravely defied the relentless assaults of foreign forces with eyes on the lands of Azerbaijan as an invincible city fortress. Gabala hasn’t lost its social and economic importance. During the second period of the V century (464), after Albania briefly surrendered its freedom and the assaults of tribes from the north escalated, the regional capital was moved from Gabala to Barda. And since then Qabala city has continued to develop as the country’s largest commercial workmanship, political, and spiritual omphalos.

Tourism in Gabala
The amount of local and international visitors visiting Gabala to be in touch with the region’s exotic nature, to experience Azerbaijan’s amazing cuisine, and to have fascinating relaxation, is growing every year.

The region’s natural environment conditions open up new perspectives for tourism growth. Gabala’s northern side of various reliefs belongs to the Greater Caucasus mountain range’s southern hills, the middle portion to the Alazan-Haftaran valley, the southern half to the Ajinohur upland. Also, Azerbaijan’s largest mountain top- Mount Bazarduzu (4466meters above the sea level) located in this region.

Gabala climate is warm-temperate with dry winters in low places, cold and humid in hills and mountains and yearly rainfall is 500-600 mm in the south, and up to 1600 mm in the high mountains in the north. Those factors build opportunities for the city summer and winter tourism growth.

Atv Safari ride length is almost 3 Km and ticket cost is 80 Manat.

Azerbaijan. Gabala recreation center

Gabala, also known as Qabala, is a city in Azerbaijan and the capital of the Qabala Rayon.

Gabala is the ancient capital of Caucasian Albania. Archeological evidence indicates that the city functioned as the capital of Caucasian Albania as early as 4th century BC. The ruins of the ancient town are situated 15 km from the regional center, allocated on the territory between Garachay and Jourluchay rivers. Gabala was located in the middle of the 2,500-year-old Silk Road, and was mentioned by Pliny the Younger as Kabalaka, Greek geographer Ptolemy as Khabala, Arabic historian Ahmad ibn Yahya al-Baladhuri as Khazar. In the 19th century, the Azerbaijani historian Abbasgulu Bakikhanov mentioned in his book Gulistani Irem that Kbala or Khabala were in fact Gabala.

In the 60s BC, Roman troops attacked Caucasian Albania, but did not succeed in capturing the Qabala territory. In 262 AD, Caucasian Albania was occupied by the Sassanid Empire, but preserved its political and economic status. In 464, it lost its independence due to years of invasions from the northern nomadic tribes and had to move its capital city to Partava (currently Barda in Azerbaijan).

On the outskirts of the city of Gabala is a zone of rest Ai Ishigami. Excursion and travel service Chalets organizes recreation in the forest, excursions, hunting and fishing. The recreation area Sahil is located on the shores of Lake Nohur, 5 km from the highway Gabala - Baku (area - 1.5 hectares). Tourists can make trips to the waterfalls, through the forest, to the historical monuments.
