Barberton: A Historic Town in South Africa
Some scenes from picturesque town and environs of Barberton in South Africa's Mpumalanga province. This region is home to some of Earth's oldest rocks, and these form the basis of the Barberton Makhonjwa Geotrail, a self-guided tour of the Barberton Greenstone Belt. In 2018, UNESCO designed the area as a World Heritage site because it represents the best-preserved succession of volcanic and sedimentary rock dating back 3.6 to 3.25 billion years and forms a diverse repository of information on surface conditions, meteorite impacts, volcanism, continent-building processes and the environment of early life.
My thanks to Lionel Meyer, proprietor of Bubez Guesthouse, for taking me off the beaten track to show me some of the waterfalls and spectacular landscapes in the hills around Barberton. Thanks too to the members of the geological team working at the Barberton Museum for showing me around their research facility and explaining their work.

In this video, we explore the Geotrail in the Barberton Makhonjwa Mountains with Tony Ferrar. The Barberton Mountains were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on 02 July 2018. This site is the first World Heritage Site for the Mpumalanga Province. Welcome to the Barberton Mountain Land. This range of mountains contains some of the oldest well-preserved rocks on earth. Rocks in the Barberton Greenstone Belt are Archean and formed in the second-oldest eon of geological time. The rock layers are between 3 550 and 3 215 million years old. BADPLAAS TOWN
Badplaas, current officially named eManzana, is a small town on the R38 road in eastern Mpumalanga, South Africa. The town covers a total area of 14.66 square metres per miles which is equal 37.96 KM squared of land. It was established in 1876 on the Seekoeispruit, in the foothills of the Dlomodlomo Mountains (meaning place of much thunder), at the site of a sulphur spring that delivers ±30,000 litres of hot water (at ±50 °C) per hour. Multiple sulphur springs are found around the area, including the one situated at Mkhingoma on the Mkhomazana river.
Swazi tribesmen were the first to discover the spring and called it eManzana, which means healing waters. It has been said that in about 1876 the Swazi chief presented this spring, in gratitude, to a hunter, Jacob de Clerq, who subsequently built a store nearby and developed the spring to allow for visitors’ use due to its believed medicinal properties.
BARBERTON TOWN
Barberton is a town in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa, which has its origin in the 1880s gold rush in the region. It is situated in the De Kaap Valley and is fringed by the Makhonjwa Mountains. It is 43 kilometres (27 mi) south of Mbombela and 360 kilometres (220 mi) east of Johannesburg.
The mountains around Barberton are amongst the oldest in the world, dating back 3.5 billion years, and these mountains include some of the oldest exposed rocks on the planet. These volcanic rocks, which scientists call the Barberton Greenstone Belt, have given direct evidence of the conditions of life on the surface of the very early Earth.
The first form of life on earth, a bacterial micro-fossil Archaeosphaeroides barbertonensis was discovered here in 1967 and has been identified as being 3.26 billion years old.

Mbombela aka Nelspruit is a major stopover point for tourists traveling to Kruger National Park and to Mozambique. Mbombela is the nearest major South African city to Mozambique's capital, Maputo, and as such Mbombela receives significant tourism from Mozambican locals. Nelspruit is also home to the National Botanical Gardens. Roads in the area include the R40 route which connects to Barberton, a border with Eswatini (Josefsdal) Barberton is a town in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa, which has its origin in the 1880s gold rush in the region.

Barberton is a city in Summit County, Ohio. Barberton became known as the Magic City because of its rapid population growth during its formative industrial years. The down town area was designed around Lake Anna, a ten acre Spring fed glacial lake. Glenn Jeep Davis was an American Olympic hurdle and sprinter who won a total of three gold medals in the 1956 and 1960 Olympic games. Davis later was a teacher and coach at Barberton, Ohio for 33 years.

The Makhonjwa mountains of Barberton are without a doubt a claim to fame of this quaint little town of Mpumalanga. This mountain range has the highest geological significance in world notably due to the impact in the area of a meteor shower more than 3 billion years ago.
Furthermore the area has a significant collection of rocks which have been dated back to the time of the creation of earth, when the oceans began to form about 4 billion years ago.
As a result, significant numbers of tourists visit the town and mountain range annually especially since the site was declared one of only 10 World Heritage sites in South Africa in 2018.
In 1884 gold was discovered in the area by brothers Henry and Fred Barber which brought with it an influx of settlers and the small town of Barberton was established.

Barberton has always been a geological wonder, so it is no surprise that Universities and Schools come to this area where they can learn more about the earths history but it can't always be just education, so we add in tours to make it more of a fun education experience. The Makhonjwa Mountains were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2018 already and it is the 1st WHS for Mpumalanga and the 10th for South Africa, if you have not visited Barberton yet, and don't know what to do in our town please feel free to contact us on 066 222 1028.
