There Are Two Ways To Get To Limerick - Episode 10, 2nd April - Dublin to Limerick

In an unusual start to the day, Geoff and Vicki visit the Irish Railway Record Society in the morning, before hopping on their first train in the afternoon. Then it's off up to Ballybrophy and on to Limerick, chatting with the people along the way.

Download the All The Stations theme tune from iTunes here: (other stores are available...)

Vicki and Geoff are travelling to 198 railway stations in Ireland and Northern Ireland!

All The Stations - Ireland sees the duo exploring the length and breadth of the Iarnród Éireann and Northern Ireland Railways networks. Along the way, they'll meet the communities connected to the lines, interview local people and those who work on the railways, to find out about their experiences of travelling by train.

To The Book! The Railway Adventures is published by September Publishing and was released in October 2018. It accompanies the 2017 'All The Stations' adventure, when we travelled to all 2,563 railway stations in Great Britain. Available here:

Ballymun (Irish: Baile Munna) is an outer suburb of Dublin, Ireland, at the northern edge of the Northside, the green-field development of which began in the 1960s to accommodate a housing crisis in inner city areas of Dublin. While the newly-built housing was state-of-the-art at the time, comprising high-rise tower blocks and flat complexes, residents were moved in years before shops, schools and other infrastructure were fully ready, and the area became well known for both a strong community spirit and considerable social challenges.

Ballymun has several sub-districts such as Sillogue, Coultry, Shangan and Poppintree, and is close to both the Republic of Ireland's only IKEA store and to Dublin Airport. The area is the source of one Dublin river, and parts lie in the floodplain of another, and there are a number of parks.

In 1997, a regeneration plan was announced, which led to demolition of the flats over time and their replacement by new low-rise housing, along with some civic amenities, a number of arts projects, including the participative tree-planting project amaptocare, and an unfinished civic plaza, but also saw the loss of many of the area's shops, including the demolition of the only shopping centre. The regeneration, originally budgeted at 442 million euro, had cost at least one billion euro as of 2016, for the public elements. A metro stop on a city-to-airport line was planned but the plans were later shelved.

Ireland's Most Famous Tenement House! (14 Henrietta Street, Dublin)

Come with us on a tour of 14 Henrietta Street! This old Dublin house is now a social history museum of Dublin life, from one building's Georgian beginnings to its tenement times. We connect the history of urban life over 300 years to the stories of the people who called this place home.

In intimate group tours, we bring to life the stories of the humans who lived in the house, their changing circumstances, their experience of family life, of politics, and the impact of world affairs.

By listening and talking with visitors, historians, residents and their families and through the knowledge of others, the museum continues to discover new stories, gathering memories and adding to the museum's collection and visitor experience.

The purchase and conservation of 14 Henrietta Street was a direct result of the Dublin City Heritage Plan 2002 – 2006 and the Henrietta Street conservation plan. The restoration and conservation of this building were funded by Dublin City Council, with additional support from a Centenaries Capital Grant from the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.

14 Henrietta Street is owned and conserved by Dublin City Council and run by Dublin City Council Culture Company.

map of Dublin Ireland

Dublin (/ˈdʌblɪn/; Irish: Baile Átha Cliath, pronounced [ˈbˠalʲə aːhə ˈclʲiə] or [ˌbʲlʲaː ˈclʲiə]) is the capital and largest city of Ireland. Situated on a bay on the east coast, at the mouth of the River Liffey, it lies within the province of Leinster. It is bordered on the south by the Dublin Mountains, a part of the Wicklow Mountains range. It has an urban area population of 1,173,179, while the population of the Dublin Region (traditional County Dublin) as of 2016 was 1,347,359. The population of the Greater Dublin Area was 1,904,806 per the 2016 census.

There is archaeological debate regarding precisely where and when Dublin originated, with a settlement established by the Gaels during or before the 7th century CE,[] and a second, Viking, settlement, following. As the small Kingdom of Dublin, the city grew, and it became Ireland's principal settlement following the Norman invasion. The city expanded rapidly from the 17th century and was briefly the second largest city in the British Empire after the Acts of Union in 1800. Following independence in 1922, Dublin became the capital of the Irish Free State, later renamed Ireland.

Dublin is a contemporary and historical centre for Irish education, arts and culture, administration and industry. As of 2018 the city was listed by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC) as a global city, with a ranking of Alpha minus, which places it as one of the top thirty cities in the world From 1842, the boundaries of the city were comprehended by the baronies of Dublin City and the Barony of Dublin. The city boundaries were extended in 1930,] in 1941,[ in 1942,[ and in 1953.[ In 1985, land was transferred between the city and the county.

Landscape
the River Liffey entering the Irish Sea as it divides Dublin into the Northside and the Southside
Dublin is situated at the mouth of the River Liffey and encompasses a land area of approximately 117.8 square kilometres (45.5 sq mi) in east-central Ireland. It is bordered by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range and sub range of the Wicklow Mountains, to the south and surrounded by flat farmland to the north and west.

Watercourses
See also: List of rivers of County Dublin
The River Liffey divides the city in two, between the Northside and the Southside. The Liffey bends at Leixlip from a northeasterly route to a predominantly eastward direction, and this point also marks the transition to urban development from more agricultural land usage. The city itself was founded where the River Poddle met the Liffey, and the early Viking settlement was also facilitated by the small Stein or Steyne River, the larger Camac and the Bradogue,[ in particular.

Two secondary rivers further divide the city: the River Tolka, running southeast into Dublin Bay, and the River Dodder running northeast to near the mouth of the Liffey, and these and the Liffey have multiple tributaries. A number of lesser rivers and streams also flow to the sea within the suburban parts of the city.

Two canals – the Grand Canal on the southside and the Royal Canal on the northside – ring the inner city on their way from the west and the River Shannon.

Cultural divide
A north–south division once, to some extent, traditionally existed, with the River Liffey as the divider.] The southside was, in recent times, generally seen as being more affluent and genteel than the northside.[ There have also been some social divisions evident between the coastal suburbs in the east of the city, and the newer developments further to the west.[citation needed]

In some tourism and real-estate marketing contexts, inner Dublin is sometimes divided into a number of quarters or districts. These include, the Medieval Quarter (in the area of Dublin Castle, Christ Church and St Patrick's Cathedral and the old city walls),] the Georgian Quarter (including the area around St Stephen's Green, Trinity College, and Merrion Square), the Docklands Quarter (around the Dublin Docklands and Silicon Docks), the Cultural Quarter (around Temple Bar), and Creative Quarter (between South William Street and George's Street) mapa de Dublin Irlanda
