If the 4 nations making the kingdom are ranked in order of popularity, we could go like England, Scotland, and, Wales. That’s why many people don’t have an idea of what living in Northern Ireland, the fourth province of the UK is. This time, we want to discuss the 10 best places to live in Northern Ireland.
This will prove that the part of Ireland that remained in the UK since 1921 is not faring badly at all. Please enjoy the discussion about the best places to live in Northern Ireland.
10. Newtownards
Newtownards is a town, townland, and civil parish in County Down. It’s not far from Strangford Lough, another one of the best places to live in Northern Ireland that would be discussed later. Newtownards is at the northernmost tip of Strangford Lough. It is also 10 miles east of Belfast on the Ards Peninsula.
When Newtownards hit the headline on July 17, 2021, it was about the townland of Ballywatticock toward Mount Stewart, where temperature peaked 31.2 °C at 15:40. Besides that, it has a very low crime rate. The town has a lot of beautiful spots that can add colors to the quality of life. Places such as Movilla Abbey, Somme Heritage Center, and Mount Stewart attract people to this town. 8 Worst Towns to Live in Northern Ireland
Let us put it in the right context before we take it so far. The expression “worst towns” here is going to be subjective and relative. This is because Northern Ireland is a generally good place to live. Regardless of how good a region is, however, some parts of it will be better than others. On the other hand, those parts of the region that are not regarded as the best are in that context not so good. And if all of the parts of a region are just good, the “least good” among them is invariably the worst. It is in that sense that we now want to show you the 8 worst towns to live in Northern Ireland.
8. Ballymena
Let’s begin with Ballymena, a large town in County Antrim. The town with a population of more than 29,000 is the 8th-largest town in the region by population. But it’s also one of the worst towns to live in Northern Ireland. Gone are those days when the town was prosperous and when a lot of factories were providing job opportunities.
The town has now suffered from a gripping recession that not only deterred investment in manufacturing but also stressed out existing shopping centers. Though some attempts have been made to rejuvenate the town economically, the unemployment rate is still very high. The shopping centers are no longer bustling as they used to be due to badly reduced purchasing power and low demands in the town. Besides, there are several rough areas such as Harryville in the town. Generally, the town that hosts 7 towers lacks prosperity, though it’s one of the safest places to live for people with legitimate business dealings.
7. Lurgan
Lurgan is another large town on this list. It is in County Armagh near the southern shore of Lough Neagh. The town is located about 18 miles southwest of Belfast having been linked together by the M1 motorway. Additionally, the Belfast-Dublin railway line serves this town with a population of 28,634 within the Armagh, Banbridge, and Craigavon districts.
Even then, it is one of the worst towns. It is divided along the religious line, no thanks to the housing anomaly. This is especially apparent in its worst part. Many of the people born in the town would prefer not to live there if they are not landlords. Houses there are usually up for buying to own not to rent. That is why it’s not a good place to live in Northern Ireland for foreigners. You will get rental areas only on Ardboe Drive and Trasna Way. But in Pollock Drive and Grey Estate, you’re in for a completely different experience.
6. Strabane
We’re now in County Tyrone to find the town named Strabane. Lying on the east bank of the Foyle River, it had a population of 13,172. It is located roughly midway from Omagh, Derry, and Letterkenny. Strabane is also on this list of the 8 worst towns to live in Northern Ireland.
Strabane has remained stuck to that unpopular tag not only in NI but also in the UK as a whole. For instance, out of 317 local authority areas in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, it is the 8th worst to live, according to the research carried out by Channel 4. The research measured 5 criteria homebuyers always consider namely crime, education, employment, environment, and lifestyle. The town performed woefully in all of them. It has been ranking badly for livability for years on end.

Coleraine is a large town and civil parish near the mouth of the River Bann in County Londonderry, Northern Ireland. Coleraine is 55 miles northwest of Belfast and 30 miles east of Derry, both of which are linked by major roads and railway connections. Coleraine is part of Causeway Coast and Glens district.
The North Coast (Coleraine and Limavady) area has the highest property prices in Northern Ireland, higher even than those of affluent South Belfast. Golf courses, countryside and leisure facilities and attractions are to be found. It has an attractive town centre, and a marina. Coleraine during the day is a busy town, however at night the town is relatively quiet, with much of the nightlife in the area located in the nearby seaside towns of Portrush and Portstewart. Coleraine is also home to the one of the largest Polish communities in Northern Ireland.
Coleraine is situated at the lowest bridgeable point of the River Bann, where the river is 90 metres wide. The town square is called 'The Diamond' and is the location of the Town Hall. St. Patrick's Church of Ireland is situated nearby. The University of Ulster campus was built in the 1960s and has brought a theatrical space to the town in the form of the Riverside Theatre.
Coleraine has a large catchment area. The town also has the advantage of being near some of the most extraordinary landscape in the whole of Europe. In 2002, Coleraine won the Best Kept Town and Ulster in Bloom awards. In 2003, it was selected to represent Northern Ireland in the prestigious Britain in Bloom competition. In the 2010 SuperValu Best Kept Awards, Coleraine was named the Best Kept Large Town in Northern Ireland
Coleraine is the main town of the world famous Causeway Coast, which attracts over three million visitors per year, spending in excess of £47 million. The world famous Giant's Causeway is a twenty–five-minute bus ride away. The distillery village of Bushmills is well-served by buses from the town and there is a narrow-gauge steam train running in the summer from Bushmills to the Giant's Causeway. The train journey takes approximately fifteen minutes from the town to the Causeway. Also north of Coleraine is the scenic coastal town of Portstewart, with fine sandy beach and coastal walks. Portrush is part of the Borough.
North-west of Coleraine lies the small village of Castlerock, with a beach which is essentially a continuation of the beach at Portstewart, separated by the River Bann. Also nearby is the huge beach at Benone Strand and Mussenden Temple, built by Frederick Augustus Hervey, an 18th-century Anglican bishop atop a precipitate cliff and overlooking County Donegal in one direction and Scotland in another. The National Trust managed Downhill forest was part of the Bishop's Palace, and although the Palace itself is now a ruin the gardens are a wonderful place full of strange hidden lakes and gloriously tended flower gardens.

Ballymoney is a small town and civil parish in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It is currently served by Ballymoney Borough Council. The civil parish of Ballymoney is situated in the historic baronies of Dunluce Upper and Kilconway in County Antrim, and the barony of North East Liberties of Coleraine in County Londonderry.
Ballymoney has expanded in recent years and a lot of new houses have been built. This is primarily as a result of high house prices in the Coleraine/Portstewart/Portrush 'Triangle' areas shifting first-time buyers to the less expensive Ballymoney area. Ballymoney is located on the main road between Coleraine and Ballymena, with good road and rail connections to the main cities in Northern Ireland, Belfast and Derry.
The Ballymoney area has the highest life expectancy of any area in Northern Ireland, with the average male life expectancy at birth being 79.9 years and 84.8 years for females in years between 2010 and 2012. Conversely, it was revealed in 2013 that Ballymoney residents are more likely to die from heart disease than anywhere else in Northern Ireland. The town hosts the Ballymoney Drama Festival, the oldest drama festival in Ireland, which was founded in 1933. The town also hosts the Ballymoney Show, which is one of the oldest agricultural shows in Northern Ireland and was founded in 1902.
Ballymoney is one of the oldest towns in Ireland with many buildings of historic note in the town centre.
An old church tower dating from 1637 is the town's oldest surviving building.
Another striking feature is the town clock and Masonic hall, built in 1775 by the 6th Earl and 2nd Marquis of Antrim. The hall was used as a market house, courthouse, town hall and school.
The town hall was erected in 1866.
Ballymoney railway station opened on 4 December 1855, and was closed to goods traffic on 4 January 1965. The refurbished railway station was opened in May 1990. It was one terminus of the Ballycastle Railway, a narrow gauge railway which ran 17 miles connecting Ballycastle to Ballymoney, on the Belfast and Northern Counties Railway (BNCR), later Northern Counties Committee (NCC), main line to Derry, and closed in July 1950.

Northern Ireland is home the Game of Thrones studio (in Belfast) for all the interior sets and many exterior locations. They are (in no particular order):
1) Carrick-a-rede and Larrybane (Viewpoint)
Larrybane, meaning ‘the ancient white site’, is classic Storms End – with panoramic views of the limestone cliffs and ocean. It hosted several key scenes, including the journey in which Brienne beats Ser Loras and is given a place in Renly’s Kingsguard as a reward.
2) Ballintoy
Still a working harbour for local fishermen, Ballintoy doubled as Lordsport Harbour (The Iron Islands) and the homecoming of Theon Greyjoy after ten years in Winterfell.
3) Cushendun
It was in the caves at Cushendun that the Game of Thrones crew filmed the dramatic scene from Season Two in which Davos Seaworth, on the orders of Lord Stannis, takes the sorceress Melisandre ashore where she gives birth to a shadowy baby.
4) The Dark Hedges
The Dark Hedges, an avenue of beech trees thought to be 300 years old, were the backdrop of Arya Stark’s escape from King’s Landing.
5) Cairncastle, Ballygally
It was here that Ned Stark beheaded the Night’s Watch deserter, witnessed by Jon Snow, Theon Greyjoy, and the Stark brothers Robb and Bran; and where Catelyn captures Tyrion Lannister whom she suspects of trying to kill her son. When Bran, Rikon, Osha, and Hodor head north to The Wall it is also from the land above Cairncastle that they take a last look back at Winterfell.

The Gorgeous Dark Hedges is a roadway of more than 150 beech trees along Bregagh Road between Armoy and Stranocum in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The trees were planted to form an amazing atmospheric tunnel that was used as a location in HBO's popular television series Game of Thrones, which over resent years has resulted in the avenue becoming a very popular tourist attraction and is free to visit. Later part of the 17th century, about 1775, James Stuart built a house for his wife that was called Gracehill House,. Her name was Grace Lynd. More than 150 beech trees were planted along the road leading to the estate, designed to create an amazing entrance.
The legend has it, the hedges is visited by a ghost named the Grey Lady, who walks the road and swishes across it from tree to tree. Many believe she's either the spirit of James Stuart's daughter, Cross Peggy or one of the maids who died mysteriously, or a possibility a spirit from a nearby graveyard beneath the fields.

The Dark Hedges is an avenue of beech trees that is located along Bregagh Road in county Antrim, between Armoy and Stranocum. There is a story and even a legendary one behind this place that make it famous and beneficial when it comes to the list of places that should be visited in Northern Ireland but actually its appearance in Game of Thrones movie series was one of the reasons why it became more famous and why lots of people are now heading to it to check the place and take some pictures.
The dark hedges was built in 1775 by James Stuart who wanted to make a different entrance to the house which he built there and named it Gracehill House after the name of his wife; he built 150 beech trees there and from that time, they made a different look into the entrance of the place and gave it a totally different feeling and experience but didn't attract as much people to it as it did after its appearance in Game of Thrones (
Walking under those trees delivers a different kind of feeling and you would actually take different pictures that you will always keep remembering. On the other hand, it is important to mention the legend related to this place and which is about the ghosts that are believed to visit the place; the legend says that the dark hedges is visited by a ghost referred to as Grey Lady who travels the road and moves from one tree to the other, this ghost is believed to be either the spirit of James Stuart daughter or one of the house's maids who dies mysteriously. The legend of this place would bring you to see the beautiful place that appeared in Game of Thrones and at the same time give you the horror of walking across a place that is visited by some ghosts.
One of the different problems which are related to the dark hedges goes to being very old and thus they are exposed to falling down with any weather condition that the country might be passing by. There are already some of those trees which have fallen down due to being old enough and some of them were taken and transferred into those doors which appeared in the Game of Thrones movie series (

These general locations of the movie which are found in Northern Ireland are not all those things related to the movie which one could find in this country, but there are also those bars, pubs, and restaurants in which some of the 10 doors which appeared throughout the movie are located and which was also part of the trips which we used to make when we were touring the country searching for Game of Thrones shooting locations.
Game of Thrones is one of those movies which attracted lots of viewers to it and that is why when it comes to those locations and sets, it is important to mention that it actually succeeded in attracting lots of tourists and even local Irish people to it, giving them the chance to explore lots of places in their country which they might have never come across before - and that is how we actually reached lots of these different locations.
The most photographed location in Ireland? The dark hedges in Ballymoney County Antrim are famous due to the TV show Game of Thrones and the kings road scene.
