Quand les gens pensent à de grands et grands projets d’eau, l’Afrique n’est toujours pas le premier endroit qui leur vient à l’esprit, mais certains des plus grands et des plus grands barrages du monde qui coûtent plusieurs millions de dollars se trouvent en Afrique. Les barrages ont été principalement construits pour une valeur économique et sont classés en fonction de la capacité de l'eau que leurs réservoirs peuvent contenir, de la hauteur, de la longueur et de la largeur du barrage. Avec une capacité de production massive de 22,5 GW, le barrage des Trois Gorges, situé sur le fleuve Yangtsé en la Chine, est le plus grand barrage hydroélectrique du monde mais voici les plus grands barrages trouvés en Afrique.





10. Le barrage de Tekeze, Ethiopie, 300 MW

Le barrage de Tekezé est un barrage en arc à double courbure situé à la frontière de la région d'Amhara et de Tigray en Éthiopie. Il est situé sur la rivière Tekezé, un affluent du Nil qui traverse l'un des canyons les plus profonds du monde. CWGS a reçu un contrat pour la construction du barrage de Tekezé et le projet hydroélectrique a été achevé en février 2009. Son coût final était de 360 millions de dollars, soit 136 millions de dollars de plus que le budget. La centrale contient quatre turbines de 75 MW, générant 300 MW d'électricité. Une ligne de transport d'électricité de 105 kilomètres le relie au réseau national de Mekelle. Au moment de son achèvement, le barrage de 188 mètres Tekezé était le plus grand barrage à voûte à double courbure d'Afrique et le plus haut barrage d'Afrique. Cependant, le barrage a une productivité de seulement 300 MW, il ne génère donc qu'un vingtième de l'hydro-énergie produite par son grand frère le barrage de la Grande Renaissance.

9. Le barrage de Kainji au Nigéria - Capacité - 760 MW

Le barrage de Kainji est un barrage sur le fleuve Niger dans l'État du Niger au centre du Nigéria. La construction du barrage a été réalisée par Impregilo, un consortium d'entrepreneurs en génie civil italiens, conçu par Joint Consultants, Balfour Beatty et Nedeco, et a commencé en 1964 pour s'achever en 1968. Le coût total a été estimé à 209 millions de dollars, soit environ 1,3 milliards de dollars en 2019, dont un quart est consacré à la réinstallation des personnes déplacées par la construction du barrage et de son réservoir, le lac Kainji. La majeure partie de la structure est en terre, mais la section centrale de 65 mètres, abritant les turbines hydroélectriques, a été construite en béton. Le barrage a été conçu pour avoir une capacité de production de 960 mégawatts; cependant, seulement 8 de ses 12 turbines ont été installées, réduisant la capacité à 760 mégawatts. Le barrage produit de l'électricité pour toutes les grandes villes du Nigéria tandis qu'une partie de l'électricité est vendue au pays voisin du Niger.
