Exploring BALACLAVA, Victoria, Australia | Lunch at Tulum, Amazing Turkish Restaurant

In this new series of exploring Melbourne suburbs, we're visiting Balaclava, an inner suburb of Melbourne, 7km south of the CBD. This suburb is also well known for the Jewish community, as there are many Jewish people living in this suburb.
The video style would be a bit different from our usual guide style. In this series, we don't do much research and just take time to stroll around the popular streets of the suburb and absorb and enjoy the vibe.

We started off with a cup of coffee and a pastry from a well-known coffee shop and a famous patisserie shop on the main shopping strip of the suburb, Carlisle Street.

We then had a very nice (and fancy, almost fine-dining style) lunch at Tulum. A very popular modern Turkish restaurant owned by a celebrity chef who appeared on Masterchef Australia TV series a few times, Coskun Uysal. We booked via The Fork app which has a promotion running in May to get 50% off the set menu. Totally worth the price!!

After lunch, we strolled around Carlisle Street, to see the shops and in the hope of finding landmarks and historical buildings. We didn't realise that the day during our visit was a Saturday, which is Jewish's Sabbath Day. They don't normally work on that day, which explains why all the Jewish own businesses were closed.

Finally, for our last spot, we visited a one-of-a-kind cafe, Levanter cafe, which specialises in Syrian food and drinks. We tried their Syrian-style coffee which was pretty much the same style as Turkish coffee. Highly recommended!

#Cairns is a small port city with access to a bounty of natural beauty. This eastern Australia city is where the rainforest meets the reef, with Daintree Rainforest to the north and the Great Barrier Reef to the east.

Start your #vacation in Cairns with some of the open parklands in the city center or by going for a short swim in the man-made lagoon. Rent a bike on the promenade or hit the waves at Trinity Beach for a surf. A trip on the Skyrail® Rainforest Cableway is Cairns #sightseeing at its best. The cable car will take you over the canopy of tropical rainforest and waterfalls.

Beware of THIS in New Zealand!

Did you expect this in New Zealand? When you come to New Zealand, you'll be shocked to see gangs. Gangs in New Zealand are so unafraid of the Police that they ride obnoxiously loud motorcycles so you can hear them a mile away.

They even wear a uniform which includes a gang patch, so you know which gang they're from.

This is how open and obvious organised crime is in New Zealand. And for visitors like my wife, it's shocking.

If you stay away from them, they won't bug ya. But the reality is gangs are known for the drug trade, murder, theft, violence against women, and the list goes on.

There are numerous gangs in New Zealand, of varying criminality, organisation and ethnicity, including outlaw motorcycle gangs, street gangs and ethnically based gangs. A chapter of the Hells Angels motorcycle club was formed in Auckland in 1961, the first Hells Angels chapter outside the US.

Soon after, the Mongrel Mob formed in Hastings and Wellington, developing into a predominantly Māori and Pacific Islander gang and having the largest membership in the country.

Through the 1960s and 1970s, other outlaw motorcycle clubs and ethnically based gangs formed, including another predominantly Māori gang, Black Power (not related to the African-American movement), which grew to rival the Mongrel Mob. from Wikipedia.

Meet a Former CIA Chief of Disguise | Object of Intrigue | Atlas Obscura

Meet Jonna Mendez, the former CIA Chief of Disguise (a real job!). During her tenure, Mendez oversaw the equipment used by spies to conceal their identities, including a five-second mask, which had been inspired by Hollywood. The technology, developed over a period of 10 years, allowed for facial movement—and, unlike its cinematic counterparts, which required hours in the makeup chair, it could be put on and removed at a moment’s notice. Listen to Mendez explain the ins and outs of this unique piece of spy technology.

⭐ History
Balaclava used to be an important town. The town houses the now disused Balaclava Railway Station which had served the Kingston to Montego Bay main line.

The Balaclava Railway Station opened 1892 and closed in October 1992, when all passenger traffic on Jamaica's railways suddenly stopped.

Notably, a serious train derailment occurred at the Balaclava Railway Station on July 30, 1938.
An engine jumped the rails and lodged itself into the mountainside, followed by coaches which forced on from the rear and piled themselves one on top of the other. 32 people lost their lives and over 70 were injured in Balaclava, headed from Kingston to Montego Bay.

Another Train Crash occurred in Jamaica. On 1 September 1957 a train carrying churchgoers from the Kingston-based St Anne's Catholic Church derailed at Kendal in Manchester, killing some 179 people and injuring hundreds.

It was the second-deadliest rail accident ever at the time and remains the deadliest in Jamaican history.

The St Luke Anglican Church which we have just passed, is where many victims of the infamous 1957 Kendall Train Crash are buried.

The St Luke's Anglican Church is really a historical treasure and museum.

Whroo Ghost Town and Balaclava Gold Mine. Victoria.

Whroo is an abandoned gold mining town in northern Victoria 7 km south of Rushworth and 10 km south-west of the Waranga Basin reservoir.
Two sailors – John Thomas Lewis and James Meek Nickinson discovered a gold nugget in the grass at Whroo in 1854, the same date as Russia’s Battle of Balaklava in the Crimean War, hence the name. A gold mine was quickly opened and was very profitable for the first few decades, leading to the development of the town of Whroo. The mine operated until the 1870s but was worked on and off until it officially closed in the 1960s.
Balaclava Hill was a very rich field and was mined by open cut. The early rush brought thousands of miners to Whroo, but within 4 years the population had dwindled to about 450. The township was surveyed in 1856.
One of the gold miners, John Lewis, was a shareholder in the Balaclava mine, and his fellow shareholder, Archibald Menzies financed Melbourne’s Menzies Hotel (1867) from the mine’s profits.
The nearby Whroo cemetery includes some beautiful, dilapidated headstones, and is perhaps most haunting for its numerous unmarked graves. Indications are that about 400 residents were buried here, and of the graves with headstones, the epitaphs tell of a harsh life lived at Whroo.
A walk through Whroo cemetery and the abandoned mining relics is well worth the trip. This is a true ghost town.

[NEW Short version] Sweatbox with JCI at the Ravenala Attitude in Balaclava

So facebook is being a )&^%%^) and has blocked my secondary account - for sharing this video in less than 10 groups... secondary account is now blocked for a couple of days... but they didn't stop there, they also blocked the content, that cannot be shared UNLESS it is advertised... in other words, they want me to PAY them so I can share it... that's bullying, and I don't give in to that kind of thing...

So there, I usually make a longer video for YouTube and a shorter one for Facebook and Instagram, so now I'm uploading the short version to YouTube as well...

Furthermore, when you share a YouTube Video on Facebook, it doesn't appear in your friend's feeds at all... because I usually get a very little number of likes... people just don't see it...

Yet when I upload the video directly to my page, then I get a whole lot of reactions and comments... that's unfair competition towards Google and I so wish that Google sues FB for that someday, and wins...

Cheers,

Reuben
