DAY 17 Xian to Pingliang, Gansu Province
This is Day 17 of the Hong Kong to Urumqi, Xinjiang trip. On this day, I rode 300km from the ancient capital of Xian to the town of Pingliang in Gansu Province. Left on a wet morning, but once I hit the deserts of Gansu Province, I dried up very quickly.

Day 18 Pingliang, Gansu to Lanzhou, Gansu Province
Continuing on my Silk Road trip, this is Day 18 of the Hong Kong to Urumqi, Xinjiang trip. On this day, I rode 300km from the town of Pingliang in Gansu Province to Lanzhou also in Gansu. Lanzhou is the birthplace of Lanzhou Noodles.

Baiyin moonscape... (HD)
It's the third time I try this point, and I still couldn't get it perfect... About 10 minutes before the train came, the sun disappeared behind some clouds that seemed to have come from nowhere, and furthermore the crew of SY 1013 didn't seem to be too eager to work hard today, resulting in very low speeds and not too much sound, and the engine isn't smoking either... Regardless of those drawbacks, I still find the view from this point amazing! Before the train came and while the sun was still shining I took a series of pictures from this spot and stitched them together when I was back home, the result can be seen here:
It's a complete 360° view, with the city of Baiyin, the smelters at Sanyelian, the (deep) copper mine at Shenbutong, Kuangshan, and the dump of the abandoned old open cast mine visible, all surrounded by the superb Loëss mountains of Gansu province... :-) By the way, this area is a restricted area, but we had a special permit from the transport department of the Baiyin Nonferrous Metals Company to be there... ;-) Not your average tourist attraction... ;-) Either way, I hope some of you enjoy this spot as much as I do... :-) (Baiyin, Gansu, China, June the 12th 2010)

Back in 2005, when Baiyin was less well known, we were able to wander freely and film without any form of hindrance... The molten slag tipping from the copper (not steel) smelter was one of the highlights of the visit.

Along Baiyin's yellow river... (HD)
I had already recorded the passenger train from this point before, but as this might have been my goodbye visit to Baiyin and because I like this point a lot I decided to try it again... This video might not be very new or refreshing, but I enjoyed myself while recording it nonetheless... ;-) the little yellow river seen in this view is new though... ;-) (It's water that drained from the dumps of the copper mine nearby, after it had rained a lot...) Anyway, the train in the video is SY 1013 with the afternoon passenger train to Shenbutong again... How much longer this train will be worked by steam is anybody's guess... I hope for at least another year, but we'll see... I hope for the best but I fear for the worst... (Baiyin, Gansu, China, June the 11th, 2010)

黄河石林地处甘肃省白银市景泰县境内，被国家旅游局批准为国家AAAA级旅游景区，距离白银市70公里，兰州市160公里，兰州中川机场120公里，总面积约50平方公里，形成于距今210万年前下更新统五泉山组砾岩，是一处主要由新构造运动控制，雨洪冲蚀、重力崩塌和风蚀共同作用形成的地质地貌景观。它的形成演化过程清晰的记录了青藏高原抬升以来这一地区古地理环境的变迁，是具有国际典型意义、重大科学研究价值的砾岩石林地质景观；是一座集地貌地质、地质构造、自然景观和人文历史于一体的综合性地质遗迹，为甘肃省地质遗迹自然保护区、国家级地质公园。

Vigourous shunting in Baiyin... (HD)
As usual, the crew of this SY seems to have another attempt at braking the accelleration record while shunting a rake of cars into Baiyin Gongsi yard... It was exactly this rather enthusiastic driving style that made my four visits to Baiyin so worthwhile... In Jixi for example, the drivers usually only used the minimum power that's required to keep their train moving... (I saw trains crawling at walking speed there, the driver rolling a cigarette without touching the regulator...) And that was rather disappointing if you're used to the superb action in Baiyin... It's really a pity that the first diesels have arrived here... :-( (Baiyin Gongsi Yard, Gansu, China, 04/12/2009)
