The double-domed Cathedral of Saint Etienne was begun in the Twelfth Century and dominates the ancient section of Cahors and its square. There's nothing like stumbling into one of Europe's ancient cathedrals on a Sunday during services to make my neck hair stand up; spine tingling and inspiring.
Even though by now I was so done with tympanums and churches, it was a morning to remember.

A visit to the beautiful and historic town of Ypres (Ieper) in Belgium!
Ypres is a Belgian city and municipality in the province of West Flanders. Though the Dutch name Ieper is the official one, the city's French name Ypres is most commonly used in English. The municipality comprises the city of Ypres/Ieper and the villages of Boezinge, Brielen, Dikkebus, Elverdinge, Hollebeke, Sint-Jan, Vlamertinge, Voormezele, Zillebeke, and Zuidschote. Together, they are home to about 34,900 inhabitants.
During the First World War, Ypres (or Wipers as it was commonly known by the British troops) was the centre of the Battles of Ypres between German and Allied forces. After the war the town was extensively rebuilt using money paid by Germany in reparations, with the main square, including the Cloth Hall and town hall, being rebuilt as close to the original designs as possible (the rest of the rebuilt town is more modern in appearance). The Cloth Hall today is home to In Flanders Fields Museum, dedicated to Ypres's role in the First World War and named for the poem by John McCrae.
The Menin Gate Memorial to the Missing commemorates those soldiers of the British Commonwealth – with the exception of Newfoundland and New Zealand – who fell in the Ypres Salient during the First World War before 16 August 1917 and who have no known grave. Please note: The Menin Gate is currently undergoing restoration work, and so is for now, inaccessible to visitors.

BETHUNE - PLACE DU BEFFROI EN DRONE
Le beffroi de Béthune est un monument faisant partie du patrimoine de Béthune. Construit une première fois en 1346, reconstruit en 1388, il a été classé monument historique en 18621. Il fait partie des 23 beffrois qui ont été classés au patrimoine mondial de l’Organisation des Nations unies pour l'éducation, la science et la culture (UNESCO) en 2005 au sein de la liste des « beffrois de Belgique et de France ».
Symbole de l’Histoire médiévale et contemporaine de Béthune, le Beffroi surplombe la ville. Situé sur la Grand-Place, il est le centre géographique, politique, historique, culturel et affectif de la ville. Parmi ses fonctions nombreuses, il faut rappeler celle qui en fait un point d’observation idéal pour scruter la campagne environnante et prévenir du danger. Le beffroi de Béthune incarne aussi au nom de l’histoire les franchises communales de la ville, ces libertés coutumières octroyées aux bourgeois par les comtes d’Artois. Il est le symbole du Nord - Pas - de - Calais : la silhouette du beffroi béthunois a en effet été choisie par le Conseil Général pour servir de logo à la Région.

Flanders is now behind us , and we continue the GR128 on French soil .
We cross French Flanders en see that this region does not deny its Flemisch roots.
It's wet and grey when we start this hike in the town of Bailleul .
We follow the hills of the Monts Des Flandres and on the way we enjoy the beautiful hilly and varied landscapes .

The Basilica of the Visitation , erected on the crêt Moor, which is the first foothills of the Massif Semnoz appears as dominant Annecy and mark every place of kilometers around. It is the symbol of the prestigious religious past of the city. The basilica was built from 1909 to 1930 on the plans of the Grenoble architect Alfred-Henri Recoura . A first project, already completed, was directed by Henry Ade at the end of the xix th century, but was nevertheless rejected in favor of the current basilica, which however Henri Adé drew the crypt.
The place of worship was consecrated in 1949 by Cardinal Tedeschini . It is adjacent to the Mother House Monastery of the Order of the Visitation , founded in 1610 by François de Sales and Jeanne de Chantal. The bodies of the two saints lie at the top of the two lateral naves, in two gilded bronze sarcophagi. They were deposited there with great pomp, the August 2 , 1911Escorted by an immense crowd from Annecy who dedicate a particular cult to Francis, whose work in 1602 to 1622 as bishop of Geneva in exile in Annecy , illuminated the city of unprecedented splendor.
The basilica was built in the typical style of the late xix th century . The bell tower has a height of 72 meters and is surmounted by a bronze cross of 7 meters . The nave rests on a crypt with lowered arches, designed by Henri Adé . The vault was built semicircular. The windows of the basilica evoke the life of the two founding saints. It has a carillon of 38 bells weighing 8 tons . The drone, a bell named Marie Françoise weighs 4 tons and sounds a false La2. The carillon is classified as historical monuments. Two Christs in cross surmounting two altars are the work of the statuary Philippe Besnard (1949).
Housed in an annex of the monastery, the Salesian Museum perpetuates the history of the Order of the Visitation , of Joan of Chantal , and the life and work of Francis de Sales. A memorial Saint-François de Sales was built in the premises of the former monastery of the Visitation, on the flank of the current church Saint-François in the old town of Annecy .

A short visit over the English Channel to the town of Dunkirk in the French Flanders region of France. We went with Norfolk Line from Dover to Dunkirk direct, a journey which takes just two hours. We also visited Bergues, Gravelines, and Hondschoote. Dunkirk has a great war museum too.
