In June we visited France and Germany. Join us on our every day trips.
From our holiday accommodation in Trescouvieux we visited the old villages of Lussan and La Roque sur Cèze.
The village of Lussan (pop. 500) is in the attractive countryside to the north of the Gard department. It is officially listed as one of the 'Gard Villages of Character'.
As you approach Lussan you can see the village spread along the top of a hill with the original walls still surrounding the village. There is a large car park just below the walls and the village itself is largely pedestrian zone.
Nestled in the heart of the Provence Gard and classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France, the charming perched village of La Roque-sur-Cèze (pop. less than 200) offers a beautiful architectural unit. Witness the remains of its castle, the Romanesque chapel, the medieval bridge spanning the Cèze and picturesque, cobbled and sloping alleys lined with beautiful stone houses.
Don't forget to admire the classified site of the waterfalls of Le Sautadet near the village, very impressive with its giant cooking pots!

It is located about 25 km north-east of Nîmes, 30 km from Avignon, 25 km from Bagnols-sur-Cèze and 40 km from Sommières. Here was built the famous aqueduct that supplied water to the Romans in Nîmes, the remains of which can be seen in the Pont du Gard.

[EN] Bagnols-sur-Cèze is a quite large town located north-west of Avignon, near the Gorges de l'Ardèche, 10 km east of Roque-sur-Cèze and the Sautadet waterfalls. In the size, it is the third toqn in the Gard region, having its origins in ancient times, when it was inhabited by Celtic people maintaining close contacts with the Greeks of Marseille. Here was also built a Roman road leading from Nîmes to Alba-la-Romaine.

La Roque-sur-Cèze fut construite sur un piton rocheux afin d'assurer sa sécurité. La partie la plus ancienne se trouve entre le château et les tours de fortifications.
Le château, qui date du XIIe siècle est une propriété privée qui ne se visite pas. On sait peu de choses sur son histoire.
À l'époque médiévale fut construit le pont qui enjambe la Cèze et qui est parfois abusivement dénommé Pont Charles Martel.
Arrivés près de la vallée du Rhône, au début de 1382, les Tuchins campèrent dans les gorges de la Cèze où ils furent rejoints par des nobles dont Régis de Saint-Michel-d'Euzet, Étienne Augier, dit Ferragut du Pin, Vachon de Pont-Saint-Esprit et Verchère de Vénéjan qui prirent leur tête. Ils s’emparèrent alors de Cavillargues, Chusclan et Tresques, avant de piller les châteaux de Sabran, La Roque-sur-Cèze, Saint-Laurent-des-Arbres et Cornillon. Dans ce dernier château se trouvait le trésor de Clément VI. Son neveu, Guillaume III Roger de Beaufort, alors Lieutenant des armes du Sénéchal de Beaucaire, organisa la répression. En septembre 1382, il recruta des mercenaires et fit venir une compagnie d’arbalétriers d’Avignon. Ses troupes cantonnées à Bagnols-sur-Cèze attaquèrent alors Cornillon. Dirigées par Gantonnet d'Abzac, Commandant du Saint-Père pour le Païs de Saint-Esprit, elles semèrent la terreur. Guillaume III fit ensuite intervenir son capitaine des gardes de Bagnols, Jean Coq. Ce dernier réussit à pacifier le pays en expulsant les chefs du Tuchinat. Ce qui permit de signer la paix en février 1383.

Balade à la Roque sur Cèze (Gard) France - La Roque-sur-Cèze est une commune française située dans le département du Gard, en région Occitanie. Ce petit village médiéval est construit sur un piton rocheux près des cascades du Sautadet. La partie la plus ancienne se trouve entre le château et les tours de fortifications. Le château, qui date du XIIème S. est une propriété privée qui ne se visite pas. On sait peu de choses sur son histoire. Le château fut brûlé en 1573 par les Huguenots et fut abandonné à la fin de xixe siècle. La chapelle romane qu'il possède a été vendue par la commune en 1955. À l'époque médiévale fut construit le pont qui enjambe la Cèze et qui est parfois abusivement dénommé Pont Charles Martel.
Ce site aujourd´hui classé en zone naturelle.
Les cascades du Sautadet sont une série de chutes d'eau et de rapides d'un niveau progressif de 15 m situés sur le cours de la Cèze, à hauteur de la commune. Ces roches calcaires ont cinq millions d'années. Les cascades se sont formées par l'action érosive de la rivière sur une masse rocheuse calcaire d'environ 500 m de large, soulevée lors du plissement alpin. Elles consistent en de très nombreuses cavités se recoupant la plupart du temps en nids de poule, corbeilles, gours, voire en grands « chaudrons » et marmites. La profondeur de ces derniers peut dépasser les 10 m. Les cascades ont pour surnom « le saut du diable »Une explication populaire récente prétend qu'il viendrait du nom Hadès, dieu grec de la mort et du monde invisible. Le « saut de l'Hadès » ferait ainsi référence aux grottes souterraines invisibles en surface, où le courant peut atteindre 1 000 mètres cubes à la seconde en période de crue et donc provoquer des accidents mortels. Cette forte turbulence des eaux, associée à un relief accidenté sur lequel les crues déposent du limon glissant, font des cascades du Sautadet un site réputé dangereux
Par ailleurs la commune fait partie de l'aire d'attraction de Bagnols-sur-Cèze, dont elle est une commune de la couronne.
Walk to the Roque sur Cèze (Gard) France - La Roque-sur-Cèze is a French municipality located in the Gard department, in the Occitanie region. This small medieval village is built on a rocky peak near the Sautadet waterfalls. The oldest part is between the castle and the fortification towers. The castle, which dates from the XII S. is a private property that cannot be visited. Little is known about its history. The “Saut de l’Hadès” would refer to underground caves that are invisible on the surface, where the current can reach 1,000 cubic metres per second during the flood and cause fatal accidents. This strong turbulence of the waters, combined with a rough terrain on which floods deposit slippery silt, make the Sautadet waterfalls a site reputed to be dangerous. Moreover, the municipality is part of the attraction area of Bagnols-sur-Cèze, of which it is a crown municipalite.

Tourism in the village of La Roque sur Cèze (Gard)
Village built on a steep rock - Romanesque chapel (XII S.) adjoining the castle. It was consecrated in 1156. Private castle. Village of rough stones .
The Bridge: according to estimates, its construction date is between the XIIème and XIVème S.- it was classified Historical Monument in October 1980.
Parish church erected in 1883.
