Bad Ischl is a spa town in Austria. It lies in the southern part of Upper Austria, at the Traun River in the center of the Salzkammergut region. It is connected to the village of Strobl by the river Ischl, which drains from the Wolfgangsee, and to the Traunsee, into which the stream empties. It is home to the Kaiservilla, summer residence of Austro-Hungarian monarchs Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Sissi Elisabeth. In 2024, Bad Ischl is the European Capital of Culture – the third city in Austria after Graz (2003) and Linz (2009). Besides the Kaiservilla, the city offers several health spas and tourist attractions, like the historic Kongresshaus opened in 1875, the new Kurhaus built by Clemens Holzmeister in 1932, as well as the Lehár Villa, the former residence of Franz Lehár, that he acquired in 1912 and today serves as a museum.

The drive from Hallstatt to Bad Aussee and Grundlsee is a beautiful and scenic route that takes you through the heart of the Salzkammergut region. The route follows the shores of the Hallstätter See, providing stunning views of the lake and the surrounding mountains. Once you reach Bad Aussee, you will find a charming town with a long history and cultural heritage. Altaussee is a municipality and spa town in the district of Liezen in Styria, Austria. The small village is nestled on the shores of the Lake Altaussee, beneath the Loser Plateau. Occupying an area of 92 km², Altaussee is home to 1,777 people. The designated climatic spa is within the Salzkammergut region near Salzburg. Altaussee has the biggest salt deposits of Austria, which are still mined today and it is located close to Bad Aussee and a short and beautiful drive away from Halstatt Austria.
During World War II (1943–1945) the extensive complex of salt mines in Altaussee served as a huge repository for art stolen by the Nazis. These artworks were accumulated under the alias Sonderauftrag Linz (Special Commission: Linz) by Adolf Hitler and were intended for the planned Führermuseum in Linz, Austria. At the end of the war the entire depot included around 6,500 paintings, as well as many statues, furniture, weapons, coins, and libraries. After the occupation of Altaussee on 8 May 1945 by an American infantry unit, the art depot was seized by the U.S. Army (Monuments Men).

Heart of Austria Pt 4 | Lakes Region, Bad Aussee, Halstatt, Salzburg | Tandem Cycling Adventure
Halstatt is quintessential Austria! From Bad Aussee we descended on our tandem bicycle adventure to Hallstatt Austria and the Hallstatter See. Hallstatt is a beautiful ancient city founded on salt mining. It's quite the tourist trap so be prepared for the crowds. But still fun! We paid the 2 Euros to go into Das Beinhaus The Bone House. Spooky! Then we rode back past Bad Goisern and Bad Ischl (stopping for pastries at Cafe Zauner--a must!) and then along the Wolfgangsee and St. Gilgen over the mountain back to Salzburg for a very pleasant evening at the Hohensalzburg Festung (Salzburg Fortress). Bad Aussee in Österreich:
Bad Aussee ist eine Kurstadt mit 4830 Einwohnern (Stand 1. Januar 2020) in der Steiermark, im steirischen Salzkammergut, Bezirk Liezen und Gerichtsbezirk Liezen. Bad Aussee gilt als der Hauptort des Ausseerlandes.
Bad Aussee bildet den geographischen Mittelpunkt Österreichs (Mittelpunktstein im Stadtkurpark), liegt am Zusammenfluss der Quellflüsse der Traun und verdankt seine Entstehung dem Salzbergwerk bei Altaussee und den damit verbundenen Salinen (noch vor 1300). Bad Aussee ist mit Oberösterreich über zwei Pässe verbunden, den Pötschenpass und den Koppenpass. Im Gemeindegebiet liegt der Sommersbergsee.

The Salzkammergut (or Salzburger Land) is a particularly attractive region to visit in Austria. So plan to do a travel walking tour in the most beautiful village in Austria, or hike the Alpine mountains, or swim in beautiful lakes during your next Austria vacation ('Österreich Urlaub' in German). There are so many things to do in Salzburg and the surrounding Salzkammergut region that you don't want to miss.
The community Grundlsee is located in Ausseerland in the Styrian Salzkammergut in the district of Liezen, Styria. Grundlsee is located at 732 m above sea level directly on the Grundlsee on the southwestern edge of the Totes Gebirge.
The five villages of the municipality are located in an elongated valley on the shores of the Grundlsee, which is framed on three sides by the approximately 1000 meters towering foothills of the Dead Mountains. The valley has an east-west length of about ten kilometers (to the Kammersee ) and a width of about one kilometer in a north-south direction with the only opening to the west to the Bad Ausseer basin. The highest mountain Grundlsees is the large high box with 2389 m at the border to Upper Austria. The inhabited area has an average height of 750 m. Due to the alpine position and the strong proportion of the Dead Mountains, about 75% of the municipality consist of alpine wastelands, the rest are forests, grassland and other forms of land.

Бад-Аусзе (Bad Aussee) - курортный город в Австрии, в федеральной земле Штирия, расположенный в месте слияния трех истоков реки Траун. Бад-Аусзе является экономическим и культурным центром Штирии, а также считается географическим центром Австрии.
Город начал процветать в средние века, когда здесь началась добыча соли. Основной период подъема города приходится на первую половину 19 века, когда эрцгерцог Иоганн, который был внуком Марии-Терезии, женился на дочери почтальона Анне Плохль в 1827 году. С тех пор эрцгерцог всячески покровительствовал городу, оказывая не только экономическое, но и культурное влияние на его развитие. Жители города были очень благодарны Иоганну, поэтому в центре парка Бад Аусзее был поставлен памятник любимому эрцгерцогу.
Сегодня в городе основное внимание уделяется туризму. В Бад Аусзее есть прекрасный краеведческий музей, который расположен в старинном здании 14 века на центральной городской площади. Одно из самых красочных ежегодных мероприятий в городе происходит на канун Великого Поста, когда участники наряжаются в костюмы с блестками и идут парадом по городу, чтобы объявить о приходе весны. Другой интересный праздник - Фестиваль нарциссов. Каждую весну, в последние выходные мая, участники строят массивные цветочные скульптуры из бледно-желтых цветов и выставляют их по всему городу.
*В 1983 году близ Бад-Аусзе впервые было обнаружено золото из слитков Рейхсбанка (как оказалось, в конце войны Борман пытался сохранить золото Третьего рейха в различных тайниках) в виде золотой крыши на домике.
