Witness Spectacular Flamingos Near Pune: My Visit to Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary
Did you know that close to Pune there's a place where you can see Pink Flamingoes from a close distance - much closer than anywhere else that I know of. This is at the backwater of Bhigwan Dam which is located at a distance of about 100km from Pune and takes about two hours to reach. Interestingly, the lake is a man-made lake which was formed when the dam was built and after that it started attracting birds from across the world. This is one human intervention that did something good for the environment!
Once you reach, you can take a boat from the parking and the boat takes about 20 minutes to reach the flamingo watching point. Unlike other places, you can get quite close to the birds in the boat. This also gives a unique opportunity to click some amazing pictures.

Flamingos in Bhigwan | भिगवण | Migratory Birds in India | Part 2 | हिंदी में
A quaint fishing town in rural Maharashtra, Bhigwan sits along the backwater of the River Bhima. This backwater, which is the reservoir of Ujani Dam built downstream on the river, is known colloquially as Bhigwan Bird Sanctuary. The human-made wetland and its surrounding mix of grasslands and farms are home to nearly 300 species of migratory and year-round birds. The greater flamingo, like many migratory birds, arrives here in time for winter. It spends the season feasting on plankton, giving it the characteristic multihued appearance. Bhigwan is a small town around 100 kms away from Pune and is also referred to as the “Bharatpur of Maharashtra”, as it becomes a hotbed of migratory birds during the winter. Most of the bird sightings happen around two places, Diksal and Kumbhargaon.
The best time to visit Bhigwan is between the months of December and March. Flamingo birds love winter season and they need less water for fishing. that's why they choose only this season to come in India.
Driving directly to Bhigwan is the most convenient way of reaching the park. Otherwise, one can always board an inter-city / inter-state bus to reach the sanctuary. These busses can be boarded from Mumbai, Bangalore, Kohlapur, Solapur, and Pune. The nearest airport to Bhigwan are Pune (105 kms) and Mumbai (258 kms). One can always take a train to Bhigwan Railway Station. Some of the trains include Chennai Mail, Hyderabad Express etc. There trains can be boarded from Pune, Mumbai and New Delhi.

Baramati is a well known historical place in Maharashtra. It is situated on the banks of the river Karha. Baramati was once ruled by the Yadavas of Devgiri. But after the fall of the Yadav rule, it was with the Bahamas of Gulbarga. Very authentic and credible historical references of Baramati's History are found in the books of Dr. Shejwalkar & Mr. Grant Duff- the well known historians.
According to Duff, Nizam Shah of Ahmednagar, gifted Baramati to Malojiraje Bhosale (grandfather of legendary Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj), in 1603. Thus Baramati was ruled by Bhonsales and later on it was included in the great reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Around this time, it was administered by Dadoji Konddeo.After Aurangzeb's death, it was won by the Marathas. Around 1745, Shahu Maharaj handed over the charge of Baramati to Babuji Naik. He was a great administrator as well as the patron of arts and religion.
The City hosts two old temples which are built around 750. One of them is of Shri Kashivishweshwar - based on the west bank of the river, the other is of Shri Siddheshwar, located on the east bank of the river. Sidheshwar Temple is considered an architectural masterpiece. The temple is located near Babuji Naik's Mansion, which houses a gigantic idol of Nandi.

बारामती (पुणे) : बारामतीचे ग्रामदैवत असलेल्या श्री सिध्देश्वर मंदिरास नुकतीच 840 वर्षे पूर्ण झाली. शहाजी राजे, छत्रपती शिवाजी महाराज, संभाजी महाराजांपासून ते कविवर्य मोरोपंतापर्यंत अनेक युगपुरुषांच्या पावनस्पर्शाने पुनित झालेले हे मंदिर बारामतीच्या वैभवशाली ऐतिहासिक परंपरेचे आजही साक्षीदार बनलेले आहे.
