- -- - - - - Burgas (Bulgarian: Бургас, pronounced [burˈɡas]), sometimes transliterated as Bourgas, is the second largest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast in the region of Northern Thrace and the fourth-largest in Bulgaria after Sofia, Plovdiv, and Varna, with a population of 202,694 inhabitants, while 277,922 live in its urban area. It is the capital of Burgas Province and an important industrial, transport, cultural and tourist centre. It is classified as the best living city in Bulgaria.

The city is surrounded by the Burgas Lakes and located at the westernmost point of the Black Sea, at the large Burgas Bay. The LUKOIL Neftochim Burgas is the largest oil refinery in southeastern Europe and the largest industrial enterprise. The Port of Burgas is the largest port in Bulgaria, and Burgas Airport is the second most important in the country. Burgas is the centre of the Bulgarian fishing and fish processing industry.[2]

A similar literal composition have the cities Burgos in Spain and numerous cities containing the Germanic burg city such as Hamburg. It is widely considered, including by the city's official website, that the name of the city is derived from the Latin word burgus as meaning a tower, after a local ancient Roman travel post, which used to be in the area of today's Burgas Port. 15 centuries later, the settlement was mentioned by the Byzantine poet Manuel Phil as Pyrgos (Greek: Πύργος), a word identical in meaning with the Greek word for tower.[3][4] The name passed to Bulgarian through the Turkish Burgaz. There are several alternative explanations for the name's origin. By one of them, the city's name comes from Gothic name baurgs as meaning signified consolidated walled villages.[5] According to Bulgarian prof. Kiril Vlahov, the name of the city comes from the Thracian word pyurg as meaning fortification of wooden beams. It is also suggested that the name ultimately comes from the name of khan Burtaz (683-633 BC).
Topography
Burgas is situated at the westernmost point of the bay by the same name and in the eastern part of the Burgas Plain, in the east of the Upper Thracian Plain. Burgas is located some 389 kilometres (242 mi) from Sofia, 272 km (169 mi) from Plovdiv, and 335 km (208 mi) from Istanbul. To the west, south and north, the city is surrounded by the Burgas Lakes: Burgas, Atanasovsko and Mandrensko, which are home to several hundred bird species. Pan-European corridor 8 passes through the city,[6] the European routes E87 and E773, and the longest national rout I/6.

The St. Anastasia Island is a part of the city.

4K Town of Sredets from above

#DiscoverBulgaria #Sredets #aerial #Bulgaria #travel

Sredets (Bulgarian: Средец [srɛˈdɛt͡s]) is a town in Burgas Province in southeastern Bulgaria. It is located near Lake Mandrensko and the northern slopes of Strandzha. Sredets is the administrative centre of Sredets Municipality.

Sredets Point on Smith Island, Antarctica is named after the town.

The Roman fortress of Kaleto, located 2 km southwest of Sredets, was constructed at the end of the fifth and beginning of sixth century AD. Under the First Bulgarian Empire, the fortress became known as Potamukastel (Bulgarian: Потамукастел). Potamukastel was destroyed in the 11th century, but later rebuilt in the 12th century AD. The fortress was abandoned during Ottoman rule of Bulgaria, and the population of Potamukastel resettled at the location of the modern town and founded the village of Karabunar (Bulgarian: Карабунар) (black well in Turkish).

Karabunar is first mentioned in 1595, and is later found in Ottoman tax registers from 1676–1731. King Charles XII of Sweden is known to have stayed overnight in the village in 1713 en route to Constantinople and St. Sophronius of Vratsa worked as a teacher in Karabunar in 1792–1793. Russian Army data from 1827 mentions it as a purely Bulgarian village and it was visited by Vasil Levski in 1868. During the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–78, the area was occupied by the Russian 93rd Irkutsk Infantry Regiment on 16 February 1878. Karabunar became part of the autonomous province of Eastern Rumelia after the war and was annexed by the Principality of Bulgaria in 1885.

The village was renamed Sredets on 14 August 1934. Under Communist rule, the village was renamed Grudovo on 1 June 1950 in honour of Todor Grudov, a leader of the Communist September Uprising of 1923 and former mayor of the village. Grudovo was granted the status of town on 6 February 1960 and, following the fall of Communism in Bulgaria, on 23 January 1993, the town was renamed Sredets.

4K Wonderfull Rocks -Tsonevo Reservoir Bulgaria / 4K

Wonderful Rocks natural landmark in Bulgaria, Varna region, Dulgopol municipality, 4 km south of the village of Asparuhovo.

The natural landmark was declared on February 17, 1949. Its area is 12.5 hectares. The purpose of the declaration is the protection of the rock formations, which prohibits changes damaging the natural image of the rocks and the surrounding landscape and nature.

Wonderful Rocks are located on the shore of the Tsonevo dam, it is a set of three needle-shaped rock massifs between 15 and 40-50 meters high. The rock phenomenon was obtained as a result of the erosion action of the wind and waters of the Luda Kamchia river on the soft limestone rock. Three tunnels have been dug through the entire length of Chudni skali, through which the road between the villages of Asparuhovo and Dobromir passes. The main road connecting the cities of Provadia and Aytos, as well as the Varna-Plovdiv railway, pass nearby.

Aytos, “The three brothers” and “Kazanite”

The movie presents the legends about Aytos, Bulgaria, and its landmarks “The three brothers”, “Kazanite” and “Genger”. The Three Brothers rock formations are north of the town. The three rocks resemble three giants, who the people likened to fighters for and defenders of the oppressed. The legend says that during the day they fought great battles with the enemy and each evening they came home to rest and turned into three rocks. The cliffs upon which they walked sank under their heavy steps and left large indentations, as wide and deep as cauldrons, named Kazanite. The movie reveals for the first time the meaning of legends and even more, but you have to see that.
