Mantova, a Unesco heritage, has ancient Etruscan origins and it is the birthplace of the Latin poet Virgil.
The city reached its splendour not only in the Middle Age but expecially during the long domination of the lords Gonzagas, who designed the city together with some of the greatest artists at the time.
Mantua is known as the City of the Three Lakes” because the lakes: Laghi di Mezzo, Inferiore, and Superiore, and the Mincio River hugs the city.
Mantova is a city on a human scale where you can walk in narrow streets and lively or silent squares follow one another, but the best attractions not to be missed if you visit the city are:
- Ducal Palace: Once it was the royal residence where the Gonzaga family lived for almost 400 years.
- Castello San Giorgio, one the best preserved castle in all Lombardy, surrounded by a massive moat (fossato) and built over 600 years ago.
- Mantua Cathedral is one of the most iconic buildings in Mantua, and one of the most unlucky one, since there’s been many fires and events which has destroyed it a thousand years ago.
- Piazza Sordello
- Basilica di Sant’Andrea, was built in the 15th Century it took over 300 years to complete!
- The Rotonda di San Lorenzo is another shining example of why Mantua has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Just outside the ancient centre of Mantua you can find the Palazzo Te. Built by Giulio Romano almost 500 years ago, probably is one of northern Italy’s most beautiful palaces.

Vicenza Cathedral, Vicenza, Veneto, Italy, Europe
Vicenza Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in Vicenza, Veneto, northern Italy. It is the seat of the Bishop of Vicenza, and is dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. Construction of the cathedral was begun in 1482, to plans by Lorenzo of Bologna, and completed in the 1560s. The cupola was planned by Andrea Palladio and probably the north doorway also. Only the original façade survived the bombing of World War II; the rest of the present building has been reconstructed. The maestri di cappella include Fra Ruffino d'Assisi (1525-31), Nicola Vicentino (1563-65), Giammateo Asola and his pupil Leone Leoni (1588-1627). The original facade is Gothic and attributed to Domenico da Venezia 16th century. It is divided into four sections: the lower one has five arches in transoms, the second with arches in the center of an oculus, the third is smooth, the fifth is decorated with five statues (and two pinnacles added in 1948). The construction of the apse in the Cathedral of Vicenza had begun in 1482 to the design of Lorenzo da Bologna, but in 1531 it was still unfinished. Early, temporary, roofing was erected in 1540, as a result of the possibility that Vicenza might host the Church Council which in the end was held at Trent. Only in 1557 did the Comune of Vicenza receive the financial means necessary from the Republic of Venice, in the shape of a bequest left by Bishop Zeno at the beginning of the century, and were therefore able to set in motion the work’s completion. Andrea Palladio, the author of the new project, most probably drew up an overall design which was however executed in two phases: from 1558 to 1559 the main cornice was built over the windows and the drum raised, while from 1564 to January 1566 the dome itself was constructed. The characteristic form of the lantern, abstract and devoid of decoration, was replicated on the summit of the cupolas of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice, and is also present in some of Palladio’s reconstructions of centrally planned antique temples, such as the Mausoleum of Romulus on the Via Appia. Since 1994, the dome, together with other Palladian buildings in and around Vicenza, has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site City of Vicenza and the Palladian Villas of the Veneto. It is slightly detached from the church and placed in the street that runs along the south side of the cathedral. It rests on a 10th-century stone base, the bell tower dates from the twelfth century and has five bells, in the chord of Eb, the oldest still in place was cast in the seventeenth century.

Join me and Dad for a fun packed day in Liverpool Merseyside! We start our day in Starbucks in Formby enjoying a tea and coffee to start the day before heading into the city centre to Liverpool's famous waterfront. We enjoy a walk around the pier head before boarding the world famous Ferry Across the Mersey for a 50 minute sightseeing boat ride along the river Mersey. This was excellent value at just £12 per person, seeing all of Liverpool's famous landmarks and taking in plenty of information during the excursion.
After a fantastic ferry ride we headed for a little coffee break in the Fab Four Cafe, a Beatles themed Bar/cafe before heading into Liverpool One shopping centre. Later in the day we meet up with some other family members, Catheirne and Dean, and go for a lovely meal in Maghull where the food was absolutely amazing!

Glass hydraulic Ceam lift at Hotel Novecento in Rome, Italy
Recording date: 6th of April 2022 and 8th of April 2022
Anyone remember this lift from 2019? It's still here, however it's changed very slightly. The motor sounds slightly different, however I can't figure out why. The lift itself isn't too bad; it has a glass wall which gives a great view into the courtyard and down Via Carlo Emanuele I. This lift has a lot of trouble levelling; it frequently arrives off-level underneath the floor. Because of its low capacity, it also often jumps upward slightly when you get out. Notice how on the 5th floor the braille plaque outside for the 4th floor XD
The hotel is basic but fine. The economy rooms are very small and rather cramped. The hotel has a roof garden which is great for nighttime. The breakfast was very minimalistic and wasn't that nice. The tea and coffee was great.

During my stay in Italy, all Covid-19 guidelines were adhered to. At time of travel, there were no restrictions preventing air travel from Ireland or entry to Italy. Face masks were worn in all public areas (museums, shops etc.), on public transport and during flights.

Explorer le Lac Majeur en Italie - Les îles Borromées et le Mont Mottarone
Octobre 2020, quelques jours avant le nouveau confinement je me suis rendue dans la région des grands lacs en Italie ! Après le lac de Côme en Septembre dernier, je me rends cette fois)çi au Lac Majeur pour découvrir les îles Borromées: Isola Bella, Isola Maggiore (dei Pescatori) et Isola Madre. Quel spectacle ! Les îles sont d'une beauté sans pareil, avec des jardins resplendissants. Le lendemain j'ai pris un funiculaire depuis Stresa pour grimper au Mont Mottarone. Et là, le temps s'est arrêté ...
