Øygarden west of Bergen in Norway - Where the coast is your playground

West of Bergen lies Øygarden, a place for active and exciting experiences. No need to travel far out of the city to enjoy great activities, nice seafood and hear interesting histories from the war. Øygarden is easily accessible from Bergen, both by bus and car.

Read more about how to visit and things to do in Øygarden:

Visiting Bergen - Complete Travel Guide

If you're planning on visiting Bergen then our complete travel guide will illustrate all the top things to do alongside what weather to expect during your stay, how to use the public transport and how much everything costs. Our guide will ensure you have all the information to hand before your visit.

Before visiting Bergen you need to plan your trip so we'll give you some facts about the size of the city and the temperature averages for each month, alongside how many hours of daylight there are each month and the typical rainfall. We'll then explain how to get to Bergen from the airport, discussing the three core options of the flybussen bus, the city light railway or a taxi.

The travel guide will then discuss all of the main things to do in the city and will devote some time to exploring some good attractions for those travelling with children. The following attractions are reviewed in this travel guide.

1. A funicular ride up mount Floyen and what to expect at the top alongside how much it costs.
2 Exploring the historic area of Bryggen is one of the top things to do when visiting Bergen so we'll explain where it is and how to get there
3. The Hanseatic Museum is a top attraction of Bergen as it will educate visitors on the history of the city and the relationship with the famous german merchants the Hansa that formed part of the hansiatic league. Again we'll explain how much it costs both for adults and children and where to find it in schotstuene.
4. Bergen has a great hop-hon hop-off bus tour that operates from May to September and passes through 13 stops lasting around an hour. We'll discuss again how much the hop-on hop-off bus costs for both adults and children.
5. The Bergen Fish market has been a central feature of the city for hundreds of years and is a great place to shop and enjoy some food overlooking the harbour.
6. When visiting Bergen you might want to take the opportunity to see the surrounding areas on a fjord cruise. One of the most popular cruises from bergen is a 3 hour cruise to the municipality of Modalen so we'll explain the costs and when these tours operate.
7. Those not wanting to spend the money or time on a full on fjord cruise can simply ride the Baffenfergen across the vagen, so we'll show you where to pick this up and how much a ticket costs for an adult and the discount available for children.
8. Bergen Maritime Museum - A visit here will teach you about the maritime history of not just Bergen, but the whole country. It's a cosy little museum and is a short walk from the city and is very reasonably priced when children under 16 go free and adults are simply 100 NOK.

When visiting any city we like to explore the surrounding areas so our guide will help you plan a visit to the famous Flam railway as it's very accessible from Bergen. You can ride the train to Myrdal and then pick up the flam railway from there or alternatively if you drive, you can drive to flam and then catch the flam railway down to Myrdal. It's not a cheap attraction so we will discuss the costs and detail what to expect on the trip.

Our travel guide series devotes some time to discussing some of the local delicacies you might want to sample when visiting Bergen and the Bergensk Fiskesuppe (Bergen Fish Soup) is a particular favourite with the locals!

Lastly our guide will pick out some great ideas for those like us that are travelling to Bergen with kids. Bergen has a great science museum a short distance from the centre called the vilvite museum so we'll explain what to expect, where it's located and how much it costs. Finally like most cities, Bergen has a very good aquarium on the tip of the harbour, so we'll show you how best to get there and the typical costs for children and adults.

There are so many things to do in Bergen when visiting this great Norwegian city, so if you find this guide useful, feel free to leave a comment with any questions, hit like if you've enjoyed it and don't forget to press subscribe so you don't miss any future uploads!

For English text, please click the ‘Subtitles’ or 'Closed Captions' at the lower right corner of the screen.

At the end of February, I fished on Askøy, which is an island located in the northwest of Bergen, Norway.
It's not far from my home. Except of a cold winter, I always get some fishes there. Today I caught Hyse and Lyr, which are big enough to keep in.

Bergen, Norway (Part One)

Recorded September 1, 2008.

Bergen is the second largest city in Norway, with a population of 252 051. Bergen is an important cultural center in its region and was one of nine European cities honored with the title of European Capital of Culture in 2000.

This video begins as I sail down the Byfjorden Fjord and under the Askøy Bridge on the Sea Princess. Bergen is one of the wettest places in the world so the bright sunshine overhead was a nice bonus for this beautiful city. After docking near the city center I started my tour of the city. The first stop on the tour is Fløibanen, a funicular to the top of Mount Fløyen where there are spectacular views of the city. Fløibanen is Bergen's biggest tourist attraction and one of Norway's most visited sights. It is the only funicular cable car for passengers in Scandinavia. After descending from the mountain our tour concludes with a drive around the city.

In my Bergen Part Two video I explore the city center on foot @
