Dieppe - Seine-Maritime - Normandie - France - City Tour

Dieppe is a coastal community in the Arrondissement of Dieppe in the Seine-Maritime department in the Normandy region of northern France. The population stood at 29,080 in 2017.

A port on the English Channel, at the mouth of the Arques river, famous for its scallops, and with a regular ferry service to Newhaven in England, Dieppe also has a popular pebbled beach, a 15th-century castle and the churches of Saint-Jacques and Saint-Remi. The mouth of the Scie river lies in the Canton of Dieppe-Ouest at Hautot-sur-Mer.

The inhabitants of the town of Dieppe are called Dieppois (m) and Dieppoise (f) in French.

First recorded as a small fishing settlement in 1030, Dieppe was an important prize fought over during the Hundred Years' War. Dieppe housed the most advanced French school of cartography in the 16th century. Two of France's best navigators, Michel le Vasseur and his brother Thomas le Vasseur, lived in Dieppe when they were recruited to join the expedition of René Goulaine de Laudonnière which departed Le Havre for Florida on April 20, 1564. The expedition resulted in the construction of Fort Caroline, the first French colony in the New World.[7] Another expedition two years before where Goulaine de Laudonnière was under command of Jean Ribault, a local Huguenot captain, had resulted in the foundation of Charlesfort, now in South Carolina. Dieppe was the premier port of the kingdom in the 17th century. Also, it is important to know that after King Edward VI died, putting an end to a Protestant country in England on July 6th 1553, Knox left England to evade the Catholic-fist of Mary I. Firstly, (under the permission of his friends), he went back to his home country of Scotland, and then after he stayed in Dieppe for a few months, continuing on his tracks he stayed in Geneva meeting one of his influences of John Calvin. On July 23, 1632, 300 colonists heading to New France departed from Dieppe. At the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, Dieppe lost 3,000 of its Huguenot citizens, who fled abroad.

Dieppe was an important target in wartime; the town was largely destroyed by an Anglo-Dutch naval bombardment in 1694. It was rebuilt after 1696 in a typical French classical style by Ventabren, an architect, who gave it its unique feature for a sea port. It was popularised as a seaside resort following the 1824 visit of the widowed Duchess of Berry, daughter-in-law of Charles X. She encouraged the building of the recently renovated municipal theatre, the Petit-Théâtre (1825), associated particularly with Camille Saint-Saëns.

During the later 19th century, Dieppe became popular with English artists as a beach resort. Prominent literary figures such as Arthur Symons loved to keep up with the latest fads of avant-garde France here, and during the season sometimes stayed for weeks on end.

Beautiful villages of Occitanie, France - Food, People & History

Thank you for watching this video on the Voila by Coco channel, also known as the Coco Channel, and please visit my website for all things French at

Now on to the beautiful villages of Occitanie, France - Food, People & History.
Quite a few departements, or districts, along the Pyrenees mountains and the Mer Mediterranee form what we call l’Occitanie. The weather, the scenery, the food, the people are all beautiful, and it is very rich in history.
So, I chose a few stops along the road that I would love to share with you in this video…
Starting with Limoux, famous for its white sparkling wine, before champagne was even born.
Then Arques, a small village, home to a castle with a main square tower which dates back to the 13th century…
The old bridge of Cassaigne…
The Pierre Lys Gorge…

And this is Villefranche de Conflent, a medieval town with an impressive, rather secure gate to the city, … its narrow streets … totally quaint and picturesque.
This was a station for merchants and traders to calibrate their rulers accurately and sell their goods in all fairness in regard to price and quantity. This particular area lived on the textile industry, canvas, ribbons, iron, and leather.
Not surprisingly one of the most beautiful villages of France, Villefranche de Conflent is also a marvel of military architecture, classified by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

I hope you enjoyed this video.
Please leave a comment, make some suggestions on some subjects that you would like me to develop, and give me the thumbs up to keep these videos coming.
Last but not least, remember to visit my website, travel, speak French, read my blog, SHOP… There is so much to do on VoilaByCoco.com.
That’s it for now!
A big thank you!

Among the many treasures the episode features are Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, classified as one of the “Most Beautiful Villages of France”, the Château de Mercuès, with its Michelin star restaurant and award-winning winery, as well as, the region’s capital, Cahors, which boasts historic bridges, secret gardens and one of the best marchés (farmers’ markets) in Southwest France. In this episode from Season 12 of Joseph Rosendo's Travelscope, Joseph offers his viewers a taste of the region’s abundance of riches.

Limoux, France. Round-the-World trip (RTW). Stop #10

Stop #10 on our RTW trip. We spent some time in Limoux, a small town in the south of France. We were able to see and understand the small town living culture. We are delighted to have had the opportunity to visit, and provide some volunteer work.

Places to see in ( Cassis - France ) Calanque de Port Miou

Places to see in ( Cassis - France ) Calanque de Port Miou

The Calanque de Port-Miou is one of the three big Cassis calanques. It is very long and narrow, and thus was very suitable for establishing a marina. The name Port-Miou is an approximative transcripcion in french orthography of the occitan Pòrt-Melhor (the best port)

Calanque de Port-Miou is gorgeous . The view is amazing and if you come from the see like I did you get the beautiful part of the calanque. See amazing boats and yachts. Go to Les Presquiles, excuse spelling, to swim. Quite a few places to cliff jump, some very high. Park your car for E8 a day, or walk from Cassis for free.

One of the best trail we ever been so far; beautiful and amazing scenery in less than an hour (relatively) easy trail along the cliff. Wonderful view of hundreds boats from the top. Walking on pontoon is forbidden. It's a relatively easy hike, particularly if you are in decent shape. The scenery is stunning, and the reward is a semi-private beach.

( Cassis - France ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Cassis. Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Cassis - France
