DONCASTER | Full Tour of Doncaster South Yorkshire, England

Full 4K walking tour of Doncaster City Centre, South Yorkshire, England
A look at the market town of Doncaster in Yorkshire in the North of England
Also watch this tour of Rotherham ????

Doncaster Town Centre was basked in beautiful sunshine when we filmed this walk through the streets to take a look at the people, shops and businesses in this bustling market town

In this video we take the route from Market Place, down Baxter Gate, then onto St Sepulchre Gate, Trafford Way, Cleveland Street and Silver Street before ending up back at Doncaster Market.

I was shocked just how big the centre of Doncaster actually is and how many big name shops there are in the streets and also in the Frenchgate Centre and Colonnades Centre. It's fair to say that there are all the big names you'd expect to see on any high street in Doncaster.

Doncaster is a market town on the River Don in South Yorkshire in the North of England.

Doncaster Market has hundreds of indoor and outdoor stands and stalls, including the beautiful Corn Exchange, a grand Victorian shopping centre.

Over 300,000 people live and reside in and around the town, although sadly it has been regularly voted in the top 10 of worst places to live in the UK.

The town also has an airport just five miles South East of the town centre known as Doncaster Sheffield Airport, and because of its location Doncaster is extremely popular with business as a hub for distribution centres for goods.

So whether you want to visit the town for the horse racing at Doncaster Race Course, the shops and shopping in the Frenchgate Centre or to hang out it's easy to get to, really easy to park up and walk into the centre and there are plenty of places to visit and look around here.

Famous and notable people associated with Doncaster include the singer and musician Louis Tomlinson from the band One Direction.

TV show celebrity Jeremy Clarkson also famously hails from the town, actor Brian Blessed comes from nearby Mexborough

I thought you might like to see what Doncaster is like in 2021 so we took our cameras and filmed this walk through the town to show it in its raw form so you can see for yourself.

So what's it like to live in Doncaster in 2021? Well there are good areas and bad areas in every town and city and it's no different here.

Things to do in Doncaster include visiting the Minster, the racecourse, or maybe a gig at a live music venue like The Leopard to see some live music, walking around the markets here etc. There are lots of things here if you're wondering what to do in Doncaster whilst you're here.

HOOTON PAGNELL: Doncaster Parish #10 of 43

Hello.

My name is Andy. I am armed with a car, a GoPro and an unhealthy amount of time on my hands.

Join me as I try to visit every single parish in the borough of Doncaster. There are 43. Here's the TENTH one - Hooton Pagnell.

Today we come to a Doncaster village that is hidden away from the hustle and bustle of the world. Located away from all the local busy roads, this place has a certain charm that just isn't replicated anywhere else.

As you drive in, you cannot miss the imposing looking structure of it's once mighty Hall with it's turret like gatehouse. You also can't miss the wall that splits this village into a high part and a low part

Flanked everywhere with stone buildings, narrow streets and quaint little features. you would be forgiven for thinking this place doesn't belong in modern day South Yorkshire. In fact, when I first came here some years ago, I thought I was on the set of Emmerdale.

STAINFORTH: Doncaster Parish #41 of 43

Three to go in Doncaster and all of them are in the North Eastern corner of the borough. To be fair, they're all different, none of the three can honestly say they are alike, not 100% anyway and you'll see why when we've been around all three. We're beginning the final push in Doncaster with a parish that has town status, and one that was once just seven households ground around a tiny piece of land near the River Don.

There's a lot more to it now, and once again we've hit a mining area, one of those parts of South Yorkshire that saw a huge boom in population when the mines were a thing in these parts. Arguably, you'd say that Hatfield Main Colliery that provided this town with the mining jobs which like so many other places were inevitably lost, did very well compared some of the others in Doncaster. This one lasted until 2015, barring a brief closure beforehand.

It doesn't produce coal anymore though and although the winding wheels and the equipment is still there, they stand empty and alone in a vast wilderness that's only punctuated by the occasional roar of a lorry as it makes it's way to the M18 on a brand new link road. There's much more to this town though than mining.

Check out the story behind the main church, vey unique in it's creation and backstory. There's a canal linked to the Sheffield Navigation, a market which still exists despite its very existence being threatened by the ever important market in Bawtry historically attracting more people. There are memorials all over the place, a fantastic war memorial in the grounds of the cemetery and a heap of shops which despite it all still operate as shops should. The reputation this place gets really doesn't ring true at times.

All of this, and that colliery still stands, for now. It will hopefully stay standing and provide generations to come with a lasting memory of what made this town what it is. This is the amazing town of STAINFORTH.

HATFIELD: Doncaster Parish #42 of 43

The penultimate parish in Doncaster is the district's bigges6 in terms of area. This is a gigantic chunk of land centred around one former village which just kept growing and growing and growing until it became a town. That one village is now five settlements, three of which have seamlessly merged into one massive conurbation, and a fourth is almost connected to it as well. The fifth lies some distance away but it does have close ties to the town in the form of the major building it houses.

It's so very varied as well. On the one hand, the original village is a very old settlement which still in places has that feel of a village that outgrew itself, marked by certain features such as the 15th century church which is a definite link to a time when there were less people around here. In fact, back then, you'd have been lucky to find even 100 people in this village, it being an area of marshland and forest which would eventually be drained by Cornelius Vermuyden.

Then we have Park Lane, better known as Dunsville, which grew in the 1930s thanks to a housing scheme which made the properties built along the A18 the ones with the cheapest rent in England. It's seen a lot of development since that time, with brand new housing estates which now touch Quarry Park, one of the parish's nine recreational and public open spaces, stretching between it and Dunscroft.

Dunscroft is another kettle of fish entirely, built for the workers at the local colliery (one we've actually seen before now too) which adjoins both settlements via the longest residential street in Doncaster - Broadway - running as it does between Dunsville and the edge of Stainforth. That's all before you've even begun to consider Lindholme which has one of Doncaster's prisons, one of three - yes THREE - within this parish!

Yes, this one is a lengthy video. At 33 minutes, I'm not even sure that's enough to cover the sheer enormity of the 62 square kilometre behemoth that is HATFIELD.

KIRK BRAMWITH: Doncaster Parish #31 of 43

We're not quite finished with the Northern section of Doncaster just yet, and this one's the last one in the combined area of the Moss and District Parish Council area. Whilst Fenwick had the area's only pub, this one has the area's only church, and it' is quite some structure, being an old Norman Church dating from 1120.

Perhaps the standout feature of the church lies inside, and as ever due to Covid, I still have to get inside one, but this one would have been one of the ones I would have liked to have done so at, with the temptation to try to find all 27 mice...you'll have to watch the video to find out what that means! There's also a bell in the tower, all on it's lonesome, which is the oldest bell in the Diocese of Sheffield.

Google Maps reckons you can walk from the main village to the other village in the parish and back in 26 minutes, which I put to the test in this video. Was Google Maps accurate? Normally I would say not 100%, but on this occasion it would seem to be right. A nice walk down the country lanes there and back is punctuated only by the New Junction Canal.

Speaking of the canal, we see it not once but twice here, crossing both a lift bridge like the one in Sykehouse, and a swing bridge, where the road literally rotates. All of this is the backdrop to a pretty pair of villages, one slightly bigger than the other, bit with a combined population of 320 people.

Welcome to the very small, lovely little parish of KIRK BRAMWITH.

Hello everyone!

As promised here is the 500 subscriber special that I’ve been working towards. THANK YOU for each and every sub this channel has got!!

I have an idea for the 750 mark too now. It won't be a video, but rather an experiment...if you're intrigued, come and join the party if you haven't already!

This is a DONCASTER themed special and it does focus on the town centre, an unparished area of the borough. I still have to visit 16 parishes in the borough. They are in no particular order:

SPROTBROUGH & CUSWORTH, BRODSWORTH, THORNE, AUCKLEY, CANTLEY, TICKHILL, ROSSINGTON, BAWTRY, EDENTHORPE, ARMTHORPE, STAINFORTH, KIRK BRAMWITH, FISHLAKE, SYKEHOUSE, HATFIELD and BARNBY DUN WITH KIRK SANDALL.

Quite a lot still to do within Doncaster!

As I said before, I couldn’t have got this far without you. YOU are the reason I can do this. .So I hope you enjoy this special video dedicated to your town centre. Fun fact, I used to live in Doncaster a few years ago, so I do know it very very well. Doesn't mean I won't have missed anything though! Feel free to leave comments as always, but most of all enjoy the trip around the town!

See you down the road..

BRODSWORTH: Doncaster Parish #38 of 43

Now we come to a parish that for some reason I have avoided doing for a long time. I really don't understand why though. This is a complicated parish and one that was tricky to film to all honesty, but quite honestly, now it's done, looking back on it, it wasn't that hard to do, even if it did require moving the car a lot and not spending much time on foot.

You see, this one's boundaries were once very different. The Model Village at Woodlands which is now part of the unparished Adwick-le-Street, used to fall within them here, because the colliery that was once here needed homes for the workers in the pit. Woodlands was considered too large and was cut from the parish in 1915.

What remained were some strange boundaries, incorporating three tiny villages and part of a Doncaster suburb, which is shared between this parish and Sprotbrough & Cusworth. In fact, recent developments mean that even the ALDI store in the area is shared by the two parishes. In all honesty, the boundaries likely moved when it was built, but Google Maps still defines them as rigidly as ever.

The parish has some interesting features. There's a woodland area where the colliery once stood, an 11th century church, two schools, part of a famous Roman road, and of course a majestic Victorian Hall owned once by Charles Thellusson, which is now and English Heritage site.

Make no mistake, this is a complicated part of Doncaster, but it's also a nice parish to the West of the town. This is the parish of BRODSWORTH.

ARMTHORPE: Doncaster Parish #39 of 43

Five parishes to go in Doncaster beginning with one that really does deserve town status. For some reason though, this one does not possess that title, unlike three of the other remaining four which all do, two of which are either smaller of similar in terms of their population.

Whatever we want to term this one, you cannot deny how this area of Eastern Doncaster had changed so much over the course of the past few centuries. Once a very small agricultural village with a load of scattered houses accounting for just 237 people in 1801, fast forward just 220 years and this is what it looks like now. A vast thriving metropolis housing some 14,000 people.

Why did it grow so fast? Well as with most areas of South Yorkshire that relied heavily on coal mining, the Model Village that sprung up opposite Markham Main Colliery when nit was sunk in the 1920s was the catalyst for a much bigger influx of people over the next 100 years. These days, with the pit closed, the Model Village is just one of the many residential areas in this village.

This was a settlement too, that never considered itself a Doncaster suburb, and even now, it remains the case with discernible boundaries, one of which is the 1903 South Yorkshire Joint Railway which skips past the Western edge of the village as it passes Shaw Wood - one of the many wooded areas that lie within the parish boundaries. I sometimes wish these video descriptions could be longer, because I could rant on about this place for ages.

What I can't type though, you can most certainly watch. It's all here, in the parish of ARMTHORPE.

EXPLORING PORTSMOUTH ENGLAND HARBOUR ◆ SOUTHSEA COFFEE, ROYAL GARRISON, BATTERY WALL, OLD PORTSMOUTH

[Filmed October 9, 2020] PLEASE NOTE: Portsmouth was in Tier 1 at the time this video was filmed, which meant there were no restrictions on travel apart from not traveling to other UK areas that were in higher tiers. We had already completed our two-week travel quarantine in strict accordance with UK govt rules, and we stringently practiced hands-face-space safety precautions.

With that, the UK is in a lockdown on the date this video is being released. As a result, some activities that you will watch us do are not currently possible, and we are not promoting that you do them until they are deemed safe in the future.

______

In this video, Derek and I took advantage of some unexpected sunny weather in our home-base of Portsmouth, England and hit the pavement. We walked from central Southsea to Portsmouth Harbour, and then followed the chain pattern along the sidewalk to learn about Britain’s maritime history in the area.

Specifically, we meandered our way from the coffeeshop to the harbour while passing the Naval War Memorial. We then scoped out Clarence Pier, admired the Royal Garrison Church, patrolled the Battery Wall and Square Tower, and ended our journey with a pint at Still and West in Old Portsmouth! It was so fun to explore Portsmouth's history on foot - and in a safe way!

I hope you enjoy tagging along with us in this vlog! Happy travels!
