Places to see in ( Sardinia - Italy ) Carloforte
Carloforte is a fishing and resort town of located on Isola di San Pietro, approximately 7 kilometres off the southwestern coast of Sardinia, in southern Sardinia, Italy. According to a legend, a local church (Chiesa dei Novelli Innocenti) was founded in the early 14th century in honour of hundreds of participants to the so-called Children's Crusade of 1212 who perished in a shipwreck just off the island on their way to North Africa during a gale. The church, called Chiesa dei Novelli Innocenti and is located within the town perimeter, is not currently used as a church (only one time in the year); it was the only evident remainder of building found at the time of colonization in 1739.
Carloforte was founded in the 18th century by around 30 families of coral fishers, originally from the Ligurian town of Pegli, near Genoa. They had left their hometown in 1541, and had settled in the island of Tabarka, off the coast of Tunisia, to fish for coral. After centuries, the coral in that area was exhausted and the families, while setting off back to Italy, found there was plenty of coral in the sea off the Sardinian west coast. They asked the King of Piedmont-Sardinia Charles Emmanuel III for permission to settle down on the once uninhabited San Pietro Island instead. When he granted them permission, the island was colonized (1739); the name Carloforte (Charles the Strong, but also the Carlo's Fort) was given to the town they then proceeded to found, in the Piedmontese king's honour. To this day, Carloforte maintains strong cultural ties with the mainland towns of Pegli and Genoa: the population still speaks a variety of Ligurian language called tabarchìn (or tabarchino, in Italian), separate from both Italian and Sardinian, which is used even by most children and taught in the island's schools.
Modern-day Carloforte's principal sources of revenue are fishing, tourism, and remittances from the many merchant mariners around the world who hail from Carloforte. Carloforte, boasting several beaches, both rocky and sandy, is a summer tourist destination. On the other side of the island from Carloforte is a functioning lighthouse (Capo Sandalo Lighthouse, now automated), locally known simply as Il Faro and whose structure dates back to the 1880s.
Carloforte boasts a long-standing tradition of wooden boatbuilding. Locally built traditional lateen sail fishing boats (luggers) can be spotted in the harbour. To the north of the town (at the La Punta locale) is a collection of buildings that housed the former communally owned tuna-processing plant linked to the once-vibrant tuna fishing tonnare industry on the island.

Carbonia is a town and comune, which along with Iglesias was a co-capital of the former province of Carbonia-Iglesias, now suppressed and incorporated in the Province of South Sardinia. It is located in the south-west of the island, at about an hour by car or train from the regional capital, Cagliari.
Carbonia was officially inaugurated on the 18 December 1938 by the Fascist regime. Benito Mussolini ordered the building of the city and was present at its inauguration. The city was built in order to provide housing for the workforce of the nearby mines. The name Carbonia comes from the Italian word for coal, a resource that is abundant in this area.
The city grown considerably since its birth in 1938, due to mass immigration of people from the rest of the Island and mainland Italy (in particular from the regions of Veneto, Sicily, Abruzzo, Marche, Basilicata and Campania), reaching about 45,000 residents in 1951. Currently it has a population of over 28,000 inhabitants.
Since the mines' closing during the 1970s, Carbonia has had to deal with a high unemployment rate. After the closure of the mines the town's economy was converted on the metallurgical industry, so today most Carbonians find their employment in the heavy industry, but also in the tertiary sector.

Sassari, Sardinia's second-largest city, is a proud and cultured university town with a handsome historic centre and an unpretentious, workaday vibe. Like many Italian towns it hides its charms behind an outer shell of drab apartment blocks and confusing, traffic-choked roads. But once through to the inner sanctum it opens up, revealing a grand centre of wide boulevards, impressive piazzas and stately palazzi. In the evocative and slightly rundown centro storico (historic centre), medieval alleyways hum with Dickensian activity as residents run about their daily business amid grimy facades and hidden churches.
One of the most important monuments in Sassari is the Fontana del Rosello , built in the Late Renaissance style and characterized by statues: one for each season, and one equestrian, of San Gavino. Also worth seeing are the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, erected in the 13th Century; originally Romanesque, it was later rebuilt as Gothic, but with Baroque facade. Then, visit the Palazzo Ducale, a monumental 18th-Century limestone construction; the Tower of St. Anthony, a remain of the original, 13th-Century city walls; and the Church of San Pietro in Silki, also built in the 13th Century. We also recommend the G. A. Sanna Archaeological-Ethnographic Museum, housing archaeological finds from the Paleolithic to the Middle Ages.
Moving towards the sea from Sassari, we reach Porto Torres, on the Gulf of Asinara. In addition to Porto Torres's charming historic center, we can admire the Basilica di San Gavino, one of the oldest and most important examples of Pisan Romanesque architecture on the island; the Basilica di San Gavino a Mare, built in the mid-19th Century near the ancient necropolis Turris Libisonis (the remains of which are kept in the Antiquarium Turritanum); the Palazzo di Re Barbaro; the Terme Maetzke and Terme Pallottino, boasting still their mosaic floors that date back to the Roman Empire; and the Roman bridge, built for commuting from city to countryside.
To northwest of Porto Torres, almost on the end of the small peninsula that reaches the island of Asinara, there is the picturesque village of Stintino, a former fishing village and now popular seaside resort with golden beaches and crystalline sea. Continuing to north we reach the National Park of Asinara, that takes its name from the island (in the center) and is a protected marine area.
Descending along the coast towards the south, we reach the Promontory of Capo Caccia and the enchanting Bay of Porto Conte. In the western part of Capo Caccia, overlooking the sea, the Escalada del Cabirol is 665 steps carved into the rock wall and leading to the Grotta di Nettuno (Neptune's Grotto), among the most suggestive of the Mediterranean. (We can also arrive here by ferry from Alghero.)
On the opposite side of Neptune's Grotto is the entrance to the Grotta Verde (Green Grotto), hiding away traces of the Neolithic Period. Grotta dei Ricami is also close, but accessible only from the sea. The Bay of Porto Conte is part of the Marine Reserve of Capo Caccia-Isola Piana. Nuraghe Palmaneva and the Necropolis of Abghelu Ruju, also in the area, are also tour-worthy.
By continuing along the coast, we reach the beautiful, monument-filled town of Alghero. First, the ancient towers that once surrounded the entire village today they have dwindled down to seven (including Torre de Sant Joan, Torre de l’Esperò Reial, Torre de Sant Jaume, Torre de la Polvorera). Other monuments include the bastions, the ancient fortification of the city; the Plàia Civica, which is the Medieval square of the city; the Cathedral of Santa Maria, built in 1500 in Gothic-Catalan style; and the Plàia del Bisbe, a Neoclassical piazza fronted by the Teatro Civico, the Palazzo Vescovile and the Casa Doria.

Spiaggia della Marina di Gutturu ‘e Flumini ad Arbus ~ 2 Settembre 2022 | Sardegna
La spiaggia di Gutturu ‘e Flumini è situata nel comune di Arbus, nel cuore della costa verde nell’ovest Sardegna, località chiamata anche Marina di Arbus.
La spiaggia è caratterizzata dalla presenza di bianche scogliere di origine calcarea a Nord e scogliere vulcaniche a sud, tra le scogliere che emergono a picco sul mare sono presenti varie insenature sabbiose.
Sulla collina che circonda la spiaggia è presente il piccolo villaggio turistico che ha una panoramica sul mare notevole.
Il colore della sabbia è tipica della costa verde ovvero dorato, che attribuisce insieme al colore della macchia mediterranea sfumature di smeraldo in riva al mare.
Il fondale è basso in riva e degrada dolcemente a largo fino al blu profondo. Tra la sabbia e gli scogli è interessante praticare lo snorkeling in quanto il fondale è ricco di vita.
Sulla spiaggia è prevista una discesa per la messa in acqua di gommoni e piccole imbarcazioni, è presente anche il servizio di salvamento, mentre i servizi ricreativi quali bar, chioschi e ristoranti sono presenti nel villaggio a ridosso.
NEI DINTORNI
Guidando verso sud incontrerete dopo qualche chilometro la spiaggia di Portu Maga e quella di Piscinas, per quest’ultima è necessario superare due fiumi facilmente attraversabili con auto sportive solo in estate. Guidando verso Nord incontrerete la spiaggia di Funtanazza e quella più lontana di Torre dei Corsari.
COME ARRIVARE A SPIAGGIA DI GUTTURU ‘E FLUMINI
Da Cagliari procedere sulla 131 e prendere l’uscita per Guspini e da qui dirigersi verso Montevecchio e seguire le indicazioni per la Costa verde e Gutturu e flumini.

La ‘perla’ della Costa Verde, nella Sardegna sud-occidentale, è un abbagliante deserto giallo-ocra, mosso dal vento e punteggiato di verde mediterraneo
Una meravigliosa oasi lontana da tutto: imponenti e sinuose dune di sabbia fine, calda e dorata, alte fino a 60 metri, modellate dal maestrale, si estendono dall’entroterra per vari chilometri sino a tuffarsi nel mare azzurro, sconfinato e lucente. Piscinas, ‘gioiello’ della Costa Verde - nel territorio di Arbus –, è simile a un dipinto orientale, un paesaggio che lascia senza fiato, una spiaggia imperdibile nella tua vacanza nell’Isola, inserita tra le più belle del mondo da National Geographic. Dopo aver percorso sentieri sterrati e sabbiosi, vedrai aprirsi all’improvviso la sua immensa e profonda distesa dorata, lunga sette chilometri. All’orizzonte azzurro del mare e del cielo si fondono, mentre le dune di sabbia brillante, dichiarate patrimonio dell’Umanità dall’Unesco, si mescolano ai colori della macchia mediterranea. La vegetazione cresce rigogliosa: ginepri secolari dai rami contorti, lentischi e olivastri che formano piccoli boschetti e, in primavera, violacciocca, giglio di mare e papavero della sabbia. Qui, ogni tanto, si aggira il cervo sardo, mentre sulla riva depongono le uova le tartarughe marine.
Le sue dimensioni permettono sempre un tranquillo isolamento. Non a caso, un ampio tratto (800 metri) è divenuto ufficialmente dal 2018 la spiaggia naturista più grande in Europa. In più, i centri abitati sono molto lontani e le strutture ricettive sono poche: un campeggio e un albergo a ridosso delle dune. Nell’arenile troverai due panoramici chioschi-ristorante e potrai noleggiare attrezzatura balneare, canoe, pattini e gommoni. L’area di sosta è attrezzata anche per i camper.
Il fondale limpido è quasi subito profondo, con una conformazione a gradini: da un minimo di due-tre metri arriva presto a decine di metri. In immersione esplorerai il sito dove ‘riposa’ da tre secoli, a 200 metri dalla riva, il relitto di una nave inglese. Le foci di due torrenti attirano vicino alla riva pesci in caccia di muggini. Per gli appassionati di pesca surf casting sarà un piacere sapere che mormore, ombrine e orate ne popolano le acque. Il mare selvaggio della Costa Verde raramente è calmo, sempre da rispettare. Il vento costante alza onde lunghe e alte, rendendolo meta di surfisti: windsurf, kite e surf da tavola sono praticati qui anche d’inverno.
Per raggiungere Piscinas, passando da Guspini o da Arbus, compirai un itinerario a ritroso nei secoli, impregnato di memorie dell’attività estrattiva, di cui è testimone il rio Piscinas che assume un colore rossastro scorrendoci in mezzo. Percorrerai la strada che da Ingurtosu scende a mare, attraverso la valle de is Animas. Il borgo, oggi fantasma e parte del parco geominerario della Sardegna, per oltre un secolo è stato centro direzionale delle miniere vicine, facenti capo al complesso di Montevecchio. In un’atmosfera da far west, incontrerai i resti degli insediamenti minerari: residenza del direttore e palazzina della direzione, chiesa e ospedale, ruderi di alloggi e di cantieri con pozzi, impianti e laverie. La strada scende ripida tra montagne di materiali di scarto, carrelli arrugginiti e vagoni abbandonati della ferrovia usata per il trasporto dei minerali fino all’attracco in spiaggia.
Le dune sono caratteristica di tutta la Costa Verde. Oltre che a Piscinas, vedrai altri ambienti ‘sahariani’ scolpiti da uno scultore d’eccezione, il maestrale, con la sua incessante azione. A Torre dei Corsari, poco più a nord, rimarrai abbagliato dalla mescolanza di dorato della sabbia, argento delle rocce, turchese e verde del mare e della vegetazione. Nelle Sabbie d’Oro di Pistis, la spiaggia più settentrionale della ‘costa’, i due chilometri di sabbia morbida sono contornati da ginepri, lentischi, olivastri. A Scivu, altro ‘gioiello’ del Mediterraneo, ammirerai tre chilometri di dune e mare turchese e sentirai un assordante silenzio, interrotto solo da risacca e versi dei gabbiani. La spiaggia è detta ‘parlante’ per via dell’eco che si sente camminandoci sopra. Altra immensa distesa sabbiosa, anch’essa di due chilometri, è la Marina di Arbus: la sua melodia di colori spesso induce a parlare di ‘Caraibi in Sardegna’. Tra ‘Torre’ e ‘Marina’ sono incastonate Portu Maga e Funtanazza, un tempo luogo di vacanza dei figli dei minatori. L’estremo limite meridionale della costa arburese è Capo Pecora, meta di pescatori sub.

Muravera is a comune in the Province of South Sardinia in the Italian region Sardinia, located about 45 kilometres northeast of Cagliari in the Sarrabus. It is a centre of citrus production, as well as a tourist resort, including several fine beaches such as that of Costa Rei.
On the east coast of Sardinia at the mouth of the Flumendosa river lies the traditional Sardinian village of Muravera. Countless megalithic monuments such as the aligned stones at Piscina Rei, the sacred well Funtana Coberta and the series of menhirs in the highland cork forest of Pranu Mutteddu bear testimony to the long history of this region. The landscapes here along the tributaries of the Sarrabus are extremely beautiful. Muravera is set in a landscape of hills and is bordered by large lagoons where pink flamingos and many other species of bird can often be seen. Citrus groves in the distance emanate a fresh scent that mingles with the salty aroma of the sea.
Muravera has a modern tourist infrastructure but luckily no large resort hotels. The visitors profit form the idyllic Costa Rei beaches which lie close at hand, whilst simultaniously enjoying the stunning landscape and prehistoric treasures of Muravera.
Those who love fine food have many treats in store for them in Muravera, among them seeing oyster breeding in action, visiting lovely orange groves and much more. Muravera is very famous for its citrus fruit orchards and the quality of its oranges. The Citrus Fruits Festival is held in April and attracts many tourists. Other culinary delights in the region include homemade bread, ravioli, cheese, wine and oil.
