Reviewing the V/Line VLocity | Melbourne to Ararat by train

Find out what it's like to travel on the workhorse of Victoria's regional rail network, the VLocity.

The V/Line VLocity is a modern diesel multiple unit (DMU), which first entered service in 2005. There are now more than 90 three-car sets in operation with more in production.

In this video, I take you on a journey along the scenic line to Ballarat via Bacchus Marsh, before heading across the plains to Ararat.

We look at some of the quirks of the route. The section of line between Ballarat and Ararat closed in 1994 when the main Adelaide to Melbourne line was standardised but via a longer route via North Geelong. Passenger services were reintroduced on the broad gauge line to Ararat in 2004.

Bendigo, State of Victoria, Australia - Unravel Travel TV

Bendigo is a major regional city in the State of Victoria, Australia, located very close to the geographical centre of the state and is approximately 150 kilometres (93 mi) north west of the state capital Melbourne. Bendigo is a vibrant contemporary regional centre, boasting beautiful streets created from one of the world's greatest gold rushes. Every visit will reveal new surprises and experiences. With the gusto of a gold-seeking miner, the people who live here are creating fascinating products, services and stories that add to the richness of the region's boom time past. It is an ever-changing feast to be explored. Nearby Heathcote has not missed the beat with artisans of food, wine and art flocking to be part of the action.

Wide streets lined by opulent buildings are now interwoven with intriguing laneways and arcades that are home to a new breed of innovators who again delve deep to create a vibrant energy across the city. Modern day Bendigo has sublime food, wine and shopping experiences against a stunning heritage backdrop.

Bendigo's action-packed events calendar is a mix of long-standing traditions, food and wine events, car rallies, sporting excellence and a great sense of fun. Since the gold boom times of 1871, the local Chinese community have come together to add Chinese dragons, regalia and startling crackers to Australia's longest continuous festival -- the Bendigo Easter Festival.

A magnificent gold rush put Bendigo on the map more than 150 years ago. Tents came first and then with the wealth from the gold came elaborately designed homes, public buildings and monuments that are still used today. Once people came from around the world to prospect for gold and forge a new beginning. Today a similar exuberance has again put Bendigo on the map as an innovative city. Recent success stories include the expansion of Bendigo Bank, Jimmy Possum and Fernwood Fitness across Australia. An exciting energy has reshaped the towns and villages of Central Victoria.

Every corner you turn in Bendigo reveals another living treasure; another vivid reminder of the city's glorious and heady past -- whether it is the outrageous opulence of a boomtown hotel, or the simple piety of a wooden church. The best 19th century cities combine grant scale and fine detail and there are few better than Bendigo.

Many of Victoria's cities and towns owe their origins to the gold rushes of the 19th century and Bendigo is one of them. Gold was no temporary lure to this city located right in the centre of Victoria -- its attractions were more than just skin deep. In fact there was very little gold on the surface at all. Most of it was far underground in rich quartz reefs stretching out over 3,600 hectares around the city.

The gold rush began in 1851 when the first diggers rushed to the Bendigo fields and continued until 1954 when the last winch on the city's last gold mine raised its last bucket of ore. In recent years mining for gold has re-commenced deep under Bendigo and continues today. During the city's first golden century, Bendigo became a melting pot with its own unique ethnic character -- the Irish at St Killians, the Cornish at Long Gully and the Germans at Ironbark Gully. These groups were just some of the many communities that helped to build Bendigo.

German architects W C Vahland and Robert Getzschmann, along with Bendigo born William Beebe, were responsible for many of the city's finest buildings. One of the most enduring and distinctive contributions was made by the Chinese. Bendigo's Chinese heritage is well represented to this day, with the Historic Joss House and the Golden Dragon Museum and Classical Chinese Gardens.

The influence of the gold rush can be felt in the very fabric of the city. Bendigo owes its broad and regular boulevards to the ambitious town plan prepared in 1854. Other streets follow the paths beaten by fossickers as they followed gullies and leads in search of gold. The city's ostentatious public buildings and gardens attest to the flamboyance of the gold rush era. So do the richly decorated privates homes.

Ararat - Green Hills Lake Slideshow Victoria Australia

Ararat is a city in south-west Victoria, Australia, about 198 kilometres (120 mi) west of Melbourne, on the Western Highway on the eastern slopes of the Ararat Hills and Cemetery Creek valley between Victoria's Western District and the Wimmera. Its urban population according to 2021 census is 8,500 and services the region of 11,880 residents across the Rural City's boundaries. It is also the home of the 2018/19 GMGA Golf Championship Final.

It is the largest settlement in the Rural City of Ararat local government area and is the administrative centre.

The discovery of gold in 1857 during the Victorian gold rush transformed it into a boomtown which continued to prosper until the turn of the 20th century, after which it has steadily declined in population. It was proclaimed as a city on 24 May 1950. After a decline in population over the 1980s and 90s, there has been a small but steady increase in the population, and it is the site of many existing and future, large infrastructure projects, including the Hopkins Correctional Facility development project.

It is named after Mount Ararat 10 kilometres south-west of the town which was named by politician/pastoralist Horatio Wills in 1841.

Ararat, the Australian Town founded by Chinese! Pt.1

This was a project I did for the ABC (Australian National Broadcaster) in 2004. It was done in flash format as bandwidth couldn't handle video back then. This is the first of a four part series that follows the fortunes of the country town of my birth. As flash is about to become obsolete, I decided to convert it to a movie format, to save it as a historical archive.

Ararat is not much different from a hundred other small country towns you may pass through to get from one place to another. Next time you stop over for a break, spare a thought for Ararat's rich history.

Ararat got it's name when the rather poetic explorer Horatio Wills proclaimed to his travel party, on choosing a nearby mountain on which to camp, We will call it Mount Ararat, for like the Ark we rested here

It wasn't until the chance finding of gold, by 700 traveling Chinese, some 17 years later in 1857, that the township of Ararat was born. People from all over Australia, and for that matter the world, rushed to the local area in the hope of making their fortune. Many, like my own Irish ancestors stayed on to become farmers long after golden dreams ran dry.

So stay a while, grab a drink and watch the movie, and learn a little about my Town .

Three weeks in Ararat, Vic

I was making my way towards Mildura, with the plan of going to the Mungo Mungo national park. When I got to Ararat, I found out Mildura was still inaccessible because of all the water and many closed roads. The only options I had was to head back to Melbourne or stay in Ararat until things improved. Ichose to stay in Ararat. In this video I show you a little of Ararat and surrounds

J WARD PRISON / J WARD LUNATIC ASYLUM / VANLIFE / THINGS TO DO IN ARARAT / VISIT ARARAT / GHOST TOUR

#JWard

#AraratPrison

This week we travel in our converted Ford transit campervan, to Ararat, Victoria Australia. Ararat is a city in southwest Victoria, Australia, about 198 kilometers west of Melbourne, on the Western Highway on the eastern slopes of the Ararat Hills and Cemetery Creek valley between Victoria's Western District and the Wimmera.

Our visit was to Ararat J Ward prison, where we got permission to take out cavoodle Twyla on a tour of the prison. The J Ward began as a prison for the goldfields in 1859 and when the gold ran out in the 1880s it was taken over by the Lunacy Department to house the criminally insane. Over the following century, it was home to some of the most dangerous men in Victoria. On the tour, we got to see inside prison cells and how the prisoners lived behind the big bluestone walls. Twyla seemed to sense ghosts in parts of the prison. In our footage, you can see orbs flying around. We’ll leave it up to you to decide if they were spirits. The prison and the J Ward Mental Asylum run ghost tours, where you are taken back in time.

We hope you enjoy our channel. It’s great to see Australian tourism picking up with many people traveling around Australia in caravans, campervans, RVs, and camping in tents. We enjoy part-time van life, creating weekly episodes that are live at 5pm (AEST) Sundays, and sharing our experiences on our travels with our cavoodle, Twyla. In our episodes we stay at free and paid campsites, showing our tips and tricks on making life on the road easier and more fun. Come join us on our adventures! ARARAT & BEAUFORT, VICTORIA / FREE CAMPING AT GREENHILL LAKE / J WARD LUNATIC ASYLUM / VANLIFE

This week we travel in our converted Ford transit campervan, to free camp at Green Hill Lake, in Ararat, Victoria Australia. We were lucky enough to meet another camper Michelle, who gave us a van tour of her 50s vintage Airstream caravan, which she purchased and brought it back to life. The refurbishment looked just as amazing inside as it did outside.
Airstream is an American brand of caravan easily recognized by the distinctive shape of its rounded and polished aluminum coachwork.

We got a fantastic free camping spot right in front of Green Hill Lake. In the morning we headed into Ararat and had a look around town.

Ararat is a city in southwest Victoria, Australia, about 198 kilometers west of Melbourne, on the Western Highway on the eastern slopes of the Ararat Hills and Cemetery Creek valley between Victoria's Western District and the Wimmera.

After exploring the town, we visited Ararat Lunatic Asylum, where we took a walk around the grounds. The atmosphere felt spooky with s sense of eeriness – even though it was during the day. As there were no day tours, we then headed back into Ararat.

Our next stop was at Ararat J Ward prison, where we got permission to take out cavoodle Twyla on a tour of the prison.

On the way home, we drove past the annual ‘Grampians Ride to Remember’ motorbike tribute ride. At this event, the community comes together to ride their motorcycles starting from Ararat and around the Grampians region. The ride raises money for the Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation. The event has a few hundred participants.

Our last stop on the way home was for breakfast in the town of Beaufort, Victoria. For a small town, they had many cafes and interesting old buildings from 1870s.

Ararat, Australia's Golden Town Dies! Pt.2

What does a Town do when both its major public and private sector employers close shop around the same time?
The town dies, people leave in the search for work, the community is destroyed and its people demoralized.
This is what happened to Ararat in the early 1990's.
All up, roughly one thousand public sector jobs were lost from the closure of the Psychiatric Hospital, the Railways and Telecom.
A downturn in manufacturing was also the deathknell for the town's biggest private sector employer, Packard/CTA.
Watch this short documentary to learn how the town was affected

Ararat, Victoria - The Bush Spirit that keeps the country going!

Aussies in the Bush are an ingenious bunch, making the most of every opportunity. Without rural entrepreneurs many country towns would lose their lifeblood.

Mark Shea looked at three success stories ranging from manufacturing to farming.

A presentation of three successful rural businesses, and all three used different methods to achieve success. Value Adding - Every lambing season there is a loss. Some lambs won't survive their first days. Seizing an opportunity, Ben and Simon Greene set up a business collecting dead lambs, removing their skins, and selling them overseas where they are transformed into gloves, vests, and kiddie's toys. They employ up to seven local people in the process. Niche Markets - Globalization has put great strains on the Australian manufacturing industry. We just can't compete with Asia's cheaper wage rates. Unless of course, as Peter Carthew did, you cater for a niche. After the collapse of Packard/CTA (as seen in 'Death of a Country Town'), Peter brushed himself off and set up AME Systems with twenty seven of his best employees. In a truly inspirational story of success, Peter has turned AME Systems into a $27.5 million dollar business employing two hundred and seventy staff. He has done this by catering for the Australian truck industry. The Aussie environment is tough on trucks and the electrical harnesses AME Systems build, stand tall when put to the test. Diversification - The hardships the Australian wool industry has faced for the last ten years with drought and low prices, has decimated stock numbers. The true believers who have kept their breeding stock, have done so at great economic cost. But out of this hardship has come ingenuity and new opportunities. Shelley and Alan Green had a sheep property that required them to both work off farm in order to make a living. They loved the farm and wanted to find a way to make it sustainable. Taking a huge risk they went into free range eggs, something new to the district. After a long period of working seven days a week, things are looking rosy for the Greens. They are just about to double production and can now afford to put on a manager and have a much needed Queensland holiday.
