BBC Travel Show - Kazakhstan special (week 40)

In a special programme from Kazakhstan, Mike Corey explores the significant role of nature on the people of Kazakhstan and the travellers who visit there. He begins by having his journey blessed by a shaman, discovering how the ancient shamanic beliefs worshipping the power of nature are undergoing a resurgence in post-soviet Kazakhstan. He heads east to see the scale of the loss of the Aral Sea - once one of the world’s biggest environmental disasters - before going in search of the waters which are now returning and fishing with the local fisherman whose lives have been transformed by the sea’s return.

Traveling to Kazakhstan? Watch this video to discover Kazakhstan's highlights!

Are you traveling to Kazakhstan for your next holiday? Are you still undecided on which countries to choose for your trip to Central Asia? If it is going to be your first time in Kazakhstan, do not miss these highlights!

When you hear the term “Central Asia”, Kazakhstan is probably the first country that comes to your mind, and given its immense size and economic status, it is only natural. In fact, Kazakhstan is so vast that if you compare it with all the other Central Asian countries, it would be more than twice their combined size. It is also the wealthiest country in Central Asia due to its enormous reserves of oil and natural gas.

Kazakhstan is a country for outdoor lovers, and as such, you will find plenty of places to explore. For experienced hikers, hiking the Tian Shan is a real treat, with plenty of challenging trails to be found. Even for those seeking leisurely hikes, hiking along the shores of Kolsai Lake’s deep blue waters will leave you in awe. Charyn Canyon offers some great photo opportunities, while the tranquillity of Big Almaty lake will take your breath away. Aksu-Zhabagly Nature Reserve is another stunner in the country, an area surrounded by snow-capped mountains, teeming with diverse wildlife and also home to some of the country’s most epic hiking routes.

“Outdoor activities seem great, but what about the cities?” – you may ask. Kazakhstan’s capital Nur-Sultan (formerly known as Astana) with its futuristic architecture and ever-changing skyline, seems like a city from the future. The city’s main draw is its aforementioned architecture – with modern and Soviet-era buildings and monuments, and a lively river-side location. Some of Nur-Sultan’s must-visit attractions are Khan Shatyr Entertainment Center – the city’s most impressive architectural structure shaped like a tent, Palace of Peace & Reconciliation – a 62m-tall glass-and-steel pyramid, National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan – a huge museum where you can learn the history and culture of the country and Baiterek Tower – an iconic 97m-tall monument with an observation deck.

Nur-Sultan, however, isn’t the largest city. That title goes to Kazakhstan’s former capital Almaty – a city with a strong European influence that also serves as a trading and cultural hub for Kazakhstan. Almaty can be defined by elegant shopping malls, lively nightclubs, fancy restaurants, verdant parks and great museums. On top of that, you can find excellent hiking and skiing opportunities just outside the city. While the city is considered the base for visiting the Big Almaty Lake, it can also be your jumping-off point to explore the famed Kolsai Lake and Charyn Canyon National Park.

Apart from its modern cities and amazing natural beauty, Kazakhstan’s historical wealth also plays a vital role in boosting the country’s tourism. There are the underground mosques and necropolises of Mangistau, the silk-road history of Shymkent, and the historical architecture of Turkestan waiting to be explored.

Must visit places and experiences in Kazakhstan: Astana, Mangistau, Charyn Canyon, Turkestan, Almaty, Kolsai Lakes, Aksu-Zhabagly, Aral Sea, Big Almaty lake

Best Visiting places in Kazakhstan || Mew Play

The ninth-largest country in the world, Kazakhstan covers a vast swathe of territory in Central Asia. While many people imagine it to be solely made up of endless, featureless steppe, dramatic mountains, canyons, lakes, and valleys can be found dotted about here and there.
#Aral
A human-made ecological disaster of the highest order, the Aral Sea dramatically decreased in size from 1960 onwards. Disastrous Soviet-era state plans saw its waters diverted to cotton fields in the desert, where it immediately evaporated or seeped below ground. Once the fourth-largest body of fresh water in the world, the Aral Sea now stands at just a fraction of its former size, and it is only in recent years that a slow recovery has been made.
Kolsai Lake
Lying around 250 kilometers away from Almaty, Kolsai Lake actually has three lakes to visit. Strung out along the Kolsay River that weaves its way among the forest-coated Tian Shan Mountains, the shimmering lakes are often referred to as the ‘Pearls of Tian Shan.’ There is an absolutely gorgeous but strenuous hike you can do that takes you all the way from the lower to the upper lake.
Aksu-Zhabagly
Established all the way back in 1926, Aksu-Zhabagly is the oldest nature reserve in the whole of Central Asia. Encompassing everything from lofty, snow-capped mountain peaks and glaciers to gushing rivers, sweeping valleys, and, of course, endless steppe, Aksu-Zhabagly really is a treat to explore.
#Almaty
The capital of the country until 1997, Almaty remains Kazakhstan’s largest city, as well as its cultural and commercial heart. As such, there is a very wealthy and sophisticated air about the place, with lots of trendy restaurants and bars for you to try out. With some great museums and historic sights dotted about here and there, there is a lot for you to see and do, and many people use it as a base from which to explore the region.
#Turkestan
Lying in the south of Kazakhstan surrounded by the Kazakh Desert, Turkestan is a unique city to visit, seamlessly blending traditional nomadic culture with the sedentary city life of nearby Uzbekistan. This makes it a captivating place to explore. The undoubted highlight is the gorgeous 14th-century mausoleum of Kozha Akhmed Yasaui, which looks like it would be more at home in one of Uzbekistan’s ancient Silk Road cities than in Kazakhstan.

The Aral Sea - one of the most unique and fascinating places in the world

As we made our way towards the Aral Sea, we couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation and wonder at the thought of visiting such a unique and fascinating location. As we drew closer, we were struck by the barren landscape that surrounded us, with dusty plains and arid hills stretching as far as the eye could see.
Finally, we arrived at the edge of the Aral Sea, and were taken aback by the sheer scale of the place. What was once a vast expanse of water now lay before us as a shadow of its former self, with just a fraction of its original size remaining. We could see the remains of fishing boats and harbors that were now stranded far from the shoreline, a stark reminder of the devastating impact of human activity on this once-great lake.
As we explored the surrounding area, we learned about the history of the region and the various efforts being made to restore the Aral Sea and its surrounding habitats. We met with local experts who explained the ecological challenges facing the region, from the loss of habitat for migratory birds to the depletion of fish stocks that had once supported a thriving fishing industry.
Despite the challenges, we were heartened to see the resilience of the local communities and their efforts to adapt to changing conditions. We saw firsthand the innovative approaches being taken to conserve water and protect the natural resources of the region, from the use of solar-powered desalination plants to the development of new agricultural practices.
Overall, our trip to the Aral Sea was a humbling and eye-opening experience that reminded us of the interconnectedness of our world and the importance of preserving our natural resources for future generations. We returned home with a renewed sense of purpose and a deep appreciation for the beauty and fragility of our planet.
