St. Ann's Bay is a historic town located on the northern coast of Jamaica. It is the capital of the parish of St. Ann, which is named after Saint Anne, the grandmother of Jesus. St. Ann's Bay is known for its rich history, beautiful beaches, and vibrant culture. Here are some key points about St. Ann's Bay:
History: St. Ann's Bay is one of the oldest European-settled areas in Jamaica. It was founded in 1536 by Christopher Columbus's son, Diego Columbus. The town served as the first Spanish capital of Jamaica until it was destroyed by the English in 1655. After the English took control, St. Ann's Bay became an important trading port and played a significant role in Jamaica's colonial history.
Landmarks: One of the notable landmarks in St. Ann's Bay is the St. Ann's Bay Courthouse, which was built in the early 19th century. It is a Georgian-style building and is one of the oldest courthouses in Jamaica. Another significant site is the statue of Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican national hero and prominent figure in the Pan-African movement.
