Set on the edge of the crystal blue waters of Lake Annecy, fed by the waters of the French Alps this historic town in the Savoie region of France is a must-see place.
The River Thiou flows from the lake giving this town its lifeblood, and a dramatic setting for the Palais de l’Isle, the 12th-century castle that sits on an island in the river. From the quaint cobbled lanes & streets, we wander to the edge of the lake and take in the views of Haute-Savoie.
We take one of the only climbs in the old town, up to the restored Château d’Annecy with views over the town and the lakes before we discover the bustling back streets of Rue Sainte-Claire and explore a food market.
This is our personal view of the town, which initially disappointed, only to win is over and is now a place we really want to return to.

Annecy is an alpine town in southeastern France, where Lake Annecy feeds into the Thiou River. It’s known for its Vieille Ville (old town), with cobbled streets, winding canals, and pastel-colored houses.
Overlooking the city, the medieval Château d’Annecy, once home to the Counts of Geneva, contains a museum with regional artifacts such as Alpine furniture and religious art, plus a natural history exhibit.

Some other day trips from Annecy to include when you plan Annecy is to check out the stunning Gorges du Fier, as well as enjoy a drive around the Annecy Lake.
And lastly, if you have time why not enjoy a day on the road to see some of the best scenery of the French Alps. Whilst we suggest a road trip to Chamonix, you easily shorten the road trip by simply driving to Flumet and back.

Annecy is the largest city of Haute-Savoie department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in southeastern France.
It lies on the northern tip of Lake Annecy, 35 kilometers south of Geneva.
Nicknamed the Pearl of French Alps in Raoul Blanchard's monograph describing its location between lake and mountains, the city controls the northern entrance to the lake gorge.
Due to the lack of available land, its resident population has remained stagnant, with 52,029 inhabitants living within the city limits in 2013.
However, its urban area, with 221,000 inhabitants, is on the 5th regional position, just behind the Geneva-Annemasse urban area, which counts 292,000 inhabitants in the northern department.
Switching from counts of Geneva’s dwelling in the 13th century, to counts of Savoy’s in the 14th century, the city became the capital of the Savoy province in 1434 during the prerogative of Genevois-Nemours until 1659.
Its role increased in 1536, during the Calvinist Reformation of Geneva, while the bishop took refuge in Annecy.
St Francis de Sales gave Annecy its role of advanced citadel of the Catholic Counter-Reformation.
The annexation of Savoy will link the city to France in 1860.
Sometimes called Venice of the Alps, this idyllic and touristic representation comes from its two canals and the Thiou river lying through the old city and whose initial role was to protect the city and to empower its handicrafts.
The city experienced an industrial development in the 19th century with silk manufacturing.
Some of its industrial legacy remains today within the head offices of NTN-SNR bearings, Salomon, Entremont and Dassault Aviation.
Since the end of the 19th century, Annecy has developed as a tourist center with the proximity of the lake, winter resorts and the renovation of its castle, inaugurated with the opening of its fine art museum in 1956.
The municipal environmental policy managed to keep 40.3% of green spaces and the city and was awarded the Golden Flower in 2015, given to the nine most-flowered French cities.
Since 1960 Annecy has been the organiser of the Annecy International Animated Film Festival, hosted at the Bonlieu Cultural Centre.
It has also been a growing educational center since the establishment of the University of Savoy in 1973.

How pleasant it is to stroll along its canals or walk around the lovely narrow pedestrian streets!
In the heart of the old town, the Île palace, a former prison and the Palais de Justice (law courts), is today home to the Annecy History museum. Near this symbolic building of the 12th century, the Sainte-Claire street is also an unmissable place during the visit for its beautiful arcaded houses. Towering over the town, the museum-castle, former residence of the counts of Geneva and the dukes of Genevois-Nemours, is dedicated to archaeology, ethnology, art, history and alpine lakes.
To complete this beautiful visit, there's nothing like a walk on the edge of the magnificent Annecy lake. Not to be missed! The Europe gardens, the Amours bridge spanning the Vassé canal, the Albigny avenue lined with plane trees and the Champ de Mars are magnificent sites great for relaxation. I doubt there is any better rental in all of Annecy. The view is magnificent. Owned by a hotel magnate, the flat is well-appointed and modern in style. White and red dominate the color palate. Jean Baptiste was quite helpful at check-in and during our stay. The flat has three bedrooms, but one is larger (the master). The smaller bedrooms share a bath.

Could not miss the opportunity to buy some of the best cheese and fresh vegetables! Arriving very early was essential to enjoy the market, avoid the crowd, and appreciate the empty roads near the river.
