North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), is a country in East Asia, constituting the northern part of the Korean Peninsula. It borders China and Russia to the north, at the Yalu (Amnok) and Tumen rivers, and South Korea to the south at the Korean Demilitarized Zone. Its western border is formed by the Yellow Sea, while its eastern border is defined by the Sea of Japan. North Korea, like its southern counterpart, claims to be the legitimate government of the entire peninsula and adjacent islands. Pyongyang is the country's capital and largest city.
In 1910, Korea was annexed by the Empire of Japan. In 1945, after the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II, Korea was divided into two zones along the 38th parallel, with the north occupied by the Soviet Union and the south occupied by the United States. Negotiations on reunification failed, and in 1948, separate governments were formed: the socialist DPRK in the north, and the capitalist Republic of Korea in the south. The Korean War began in 1950, with an invasion by North Korea, and lasted to 1953. The Korean Armistice Agreement brought about a ceasefire and established a demilitarized zone (DMZ), but no formal peace treaty was ever signed.
According to Article 1 of the state constitution, North Korea is an independent socialist state. It holds elections, though they have been described by independent observers as sham elections, as North Korea is a totalitarian dictatorship, with an elaborate cult of personality around the Kim dynasty. The Workers' Party of Korea, led by a member of the ruling family, is the dominant party and leads the Democratic Front for the Reunification of Korea, of which all political officers are required to be members.
According to Article 3 of the constitution, Juche is the official ideology of North Korea. The means of production are owned by the state through state-run enterprises and collectivized farms. Most services—such as healthcare, education, housing, and food production—are subsidized or state-funded. From 1994 to 1998, North Korea suffered a famine that resulted in the deaths of between 240,000 and 420,000 people, and the population continues to suffer from malnutrition. North Korea occupies the northern portion of the Korean Peninsula, lying between latitudes 37° and 43°N, and longitudes 124° and 131°E. It covers an area of 120,540 square kilometers (46,541 sq mi). To its west are the Yellow Sea and Korea Bay, and to its east lies Japan across the Sea of Japan.
Early European visitors to Korea remarked that the country resembled a sea in a heavy gale because of the many successive mountain ranges that crisscross the peninsula. Some 80 percent of North Korea is composed of mountains and uplands, separated by deep and narrow valleys. All of the Korean Peninsula's mountains with elevations of 2,000 meters (6,600 ft) or more are located in North Korea. The highest point in North Korea is Paektu Mountain, a volcanic mountain with an elevation of 2,744 meters (9,003 ft) above sea level.[95] Considered a sacred place by North Koreans, Mount Paektu holds significance in Korean culture and has been incorporated in the elaborate folklore and personality cult around the Kim dynasty.
North Korea follows Songun, or military first policy, for its Korean People's Army. It possesses nuclear weapons, and is the country with the second highest number of military and paramilitary personnel, with a total of 7.769 million active, reserve, and paramilitary personnel, or approximately 30% of its population. Chonsam Co-operative Farm North Korea DPRK April 2012
One of the two Co-operative farms which we visited in North Korea. This is in Chon Sam Chonsam Cooperative Farm. Google Earth Coordinates: 39.069781°, 127.485482°. Formed in 1953 when 3 villages agreed to co-opt. Comprising 500 hectares of which 300 are devoted to paddy fields for rice production.Purportedly 800 farmers work here - it did actually look like a working farm The fields look particularly wet because of the previous day's rain rather than because of irrigation. We were also shown a library (closed), a cinema showing the latest NK Government blockbuster, and some typical houses. The children singing in the yard are from the creche. We were also told of another amazing feat which the Dear Leader Kim Il Sung performed - guessing (to within 3) that there were 800 persimmons on the persimmon tree which was growing there (on his last visit) whilst also giving on the spot guidance to the farmers...... :-)

Korean Supermarket Tour + Prices at Home Plus in Busan | Grocery shopping in Korea:
Hey guys! We are Samuel and Audrey, a vlogging travel couple from Canada. In this travel channel we share our travel and food vlogs while touring the world.
Our most recent trip was to South Korea where I embarked upon a two-week adventure without Audrey. Invited as part of a YouTube vlogging trip, organized by KTO, I spent the first week traveling with other YouTubers in Seoul, Busan and Gyeongju. My second week included independent exploration of Korea with my good friend and fellow YouTuber David of DavidsBeenHere.
Having lived and traveled in South Korea, the chance to return to one of my favorite countries was one of the biggest surprises of 2019. On this particular trip, I had an opportunity to do many things I had not previously covered including a visit to the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone between South Korea and North Korea), a Buddhist Temple Stay and a Korean cooking class. It was almost as if the program designed by KTO knew exactly what I had missed out on before.
Obviously, a huge highlight from the two weeks I spent revisiting Korea was the food. I feasted on all of my favorite Korean dishes including Korean barbecue, dolsot bibimbap, haemul pajeon, tteokbokki, bulgogi, kimbap and many others. I can honestly say that Korean food is world-class and is one of my top 5 favorite cuisines in the world. Aside from trying familiar dishes, I had the opportunity to sample raw Korean seafood for the first time.
While visiting Seoul, highlights included going to Gyeongbokgung Palace, Namsan Seoul Tower, Jogyesa Temple and Hongdae. As one of the biggest cities in the world, I barely scratched the surface of things to do in Seoul.
Spending extended time in Busan was my favorite part about the trip with top highlights including a Korean temple stay, fresh fish markets and a Korean baseball game. It was from Busan that we ended up taking a day-trip to Daegu where we enjoyed a traditional Korean market and tried Galbi-Jjim for the first time.

The United States and South Korea report that a North Korean missile test failed. North Korea tried to launch an unknown type of rocket from the east coast, but we assume it failed, said the head of the South Korean army.
The US Army in the region said that a missile launch was discovered near the city of Sinpo, a spot where rockets were already carried out at 23.21 Dutch time. The rocket exploded almost immediately after takeoff, according to a spokesman.
Further details are missing. The South Korean army reports that the launch is still being analyzed to see what kind of rocket it was.
Intercontinental rocket?
A military test was expected this weekend due to the national holiday in honor of Kim Il-sung, founder of the communist regime in Pyongyang. Internationally, a sixth nuclear test of the country was taken into account.
During a parade on the Sun Day, North Korea showed a new type of rocket yesterday. International experts speculated that it might be a new intercontinental missile. It could have a much larger range than the medium-range missiles that North Korea has tested so far.
The tension in the region has increased in recent days due to the threat of an atomic test. US President Trump officially warned the country and sent a squadron with a plane ship to the Korean peninsula. Pyongyang threatened to hit back hard if the country were attacked.
Busy
US Vice President Pence begins a 10-day tour of Asia today with a visit to South Korea and Japan. He will assure American support to the countries.
Pence has been in touch with Trump to discuss the missed missile test. Defense Minister Mattis said the president would not comment again.
Previously, Trump already talked with Chinese President Xi about boosting pressure on Kim Jong-un to give up its nuclear ambitions. That did not lead to concrete commitments from the Chinese side.

The average temperature is -4.1 ℃ in January and 22.6 ℃ in August. The average annual rainfall is 688 millimeters.

Fishery[edit]
It is an important base for fishing, with a recent government emphasis on aquaculture. The DPRK has created aquacultural cooperatives and a central aquaculture office in the city.
Nuclear power[edit]
Near Sinp'o in 1987 the building of first national nuclear plant was started by the USSR but construction was cancelled in 1991 due to lack of funding and in 1993 finally according to political reasons.
Later this place was the site of two planned reactors which were to have been built by the Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization (KEDO) with international support. Preparations on site began in 1994 and construction of a reactor started in 1997, but was never completed. The last foreign workers were removed from the area in January 2006.

Sinpo is a major hub of the defense industry of North Korea, and its shipyards have produced the Sinpo-class submarine, and is adjacent to the Mayang-Do Naval Base and a land-based SLBM launch platform.[1]
Notable events[edit]
Sinp'o may have been the site of a severe railroad accident in 1995, with over 700 civilians killed. Those who died were passengers from the lower classes, packed into standing-room only cars. The survivors, mostly party elites and their relatives, were in safer cars at the front of the train.[citation needed]
