Manakara to Fianarantsoa Train Journey, Madagascar, Africa

On vacation in madagascar I took the train between Manakara and Fianarantsoa. In this video you can see the beautiful scenery and the local people. There were only 9 tourists on the train. I ride in the Firstclass, goodwagon, locomotive, on front of the locomotive and on the flatbed.

The train needed 13 hours for the 163km track. The track is very old and not straight. The locomotive is an Alsthom AD16B with a 1600hp V16 diesel engine.

Everything is worn out and this is the last locomotive on that track and they started with 6 of them. The train is very essential for the area to get the goods to the market. There are not much decent roads in the area. So the train is a lifeline.

The camera shake comes from the track which is not straight.

Vato Masina I: Sapphires rush near Bemainty, Madagascar (first part)

In September 2016 a major sapphire rush took place near Bemainty village close to Ambatondrazaka in Madagascar. Blue and orange sapphires of exceptional quality and size were discovered in a forest covered area part of the CAZ, an area dedicated to conservation. The discovery soon attracted tens of thousands of miners from all around Madagascar. Field Gemologist Vincent Pardieu, an independent consultant with a passion for both gemology and conservation, visited the new deposit in Feb 2017 while the rush was already ongoing for 6 months. This short video is about that first field expedition.

Vincent Pardieu returned there in October 2017 for a second expedition to see how things changed. The following short video is about that second field expedition:
