William K. Vanderbilt II, a well-known yachtsman and scientific explorer, spent much of his life at sea. The custom-built Alva, 264-feet long, was his largest and grandest yacht– a marvel in its time. In it, he and his wife, a few friends, and a large crew circumnavigated the globe in 1931-32. Along the way, he collected countless marine and natural-history specimens and cultural artifacts for his growing museum.
