Benin
Country in West Africa
Benin, a French-speaking West African nation, is a birthplace of the vodun (or “voodoo”) religion and home to the former Dahomey Kingdom from circa 1600–1900. In Abomey, Dahomey's former capital, the Historical Museum occupies two royal palaces with bas-reliefs recounting the kingdom’s past and a throne mounted on human skulls. To the north, Pendjari National Park offers safaris with elephants, hippos and lions. ― Google

I Visit the Birth Place of Voodoo.

Benin Republic is the birth place of Voodoo in West Africa.

Ouidah is a historical voodoo city in Cotonou, Benin Republic, and it is home to the world's only python temple, which I visit as a tourist. As of the time of recording the above video, we were the only tourists inside the temple, giving us the opportunity to ask a lot of questions about the pythons in OUIDAH, BENIN REPUBLIC

Snakes are feared in most areas of the world, yet they are cherished in Benin. In Benin, especially in Ouidah, royal pythons are revered. The good news is that royal pythons are not poisonous.

I hope you have had a better understanding of our Yoruba tour and the temple itself. If you appreciate watching this and would like to see more of it on our channel, please consider subscribing.

map of Benin [ Africa ]

Benin ; French: Bénin [benɛ̃]), officially the Republic of Benin (French: République du Bénin) and formerly known as Dahomey, is a country in West Africa. It is bordered by Togo to the west, Nigeria to the east, Burkina Faso to the north-west, and Niger to the north-east. The majority of its population lives on the small southern coastline of the Bight of Benin, part of the Gulf of Guinea in the northernmost tropical portion of the Atlantic Ocean. The capital of Benin is Porto-Novo, but the seat of government is in Cotonou, the country's largest city and economic capital. Benin covers an area of 114,763 square kilometres (44,310 sq mi) and its population in 2018 was estimated to be approximately 11.49 million Benin is a tropical nation, highly dependent on agriculture, and is a large exporter of palm oil and cotton. Substantial employment and income arise from subsistence farming.

The official language of Benin is French, with several indigenous languages such as Fon, Bariba, Yoruba and Dendi also being commonly spoken. The largest religious group in Benin is Roman Catholicism, followed closely by Islam, Vodun (commonly referred to as Voodoo outside the country) and Protestantism. Benin is a member of the United Nations, the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the South Atlantic Peace and Cooperation Zone, La Francophonie, the Community of Sahel–Saharan States, the African Petroleum Producers Association and the Niger Basin Authority.

From the 17th to the 19th century, the main political entities in the area were the Kingdom of Dahomey, along with the city-state of Porto-Novo, and a large area with many different nations to the north. This region was referred to as the Slave Coast from as early as the 17th century due to the large number of people who were kidnapped and trafficked to the New World during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. After slavery was abolished, France took over the country and renamed it French Dahomey. In 1960, Dahomey gained full independence from France. The sovereign state has had a tumultuous history since then, with many different democratic governments, military coups, and military governments. A self-described Marxist–Leninist state called the People's Republic of Benin existed between 1975 and 1990. Alibori Kandi Borgou North North East

The majority of Benin's 11,485,000 inhabitants live in the south of the country. The population is young, with a life expectancy of 62 years. About 42 African ethnic groups live in this country, including the Yoruba in the southeast (migrated from what is now Nigeria in the 12th century); the Dendi in the north-central area (who came from Mali in the 16th century); the Bariba and the Fula in the northeast; the Betammaribe and the Somba in the Atakora Mountains; the Fon in the area around Abomey in the South Central and the Mina, Xueda, and Aja (who came from Togo) on the coast.

Recent migrations have brought other African nationals to Benin that include Nigerians, Togolese, and Malians. The foreign community also includes many Lebanese and Indians involved in trade and commerce. The personnel of the many European embassies and foreign aid missions and of nongovernmental organisations and various missionary groups account for a large part of the 5,500 European population. A small part of the European population consists of Beninese citizens of French ancestry.

Tu as le choix !

(oui je me répéte !) .

First catholic church in benin!!! BASILICA OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION, Ouidah/ BENIN TOUR PART 2

Meet the first catholic church in benin.

Located in Ouidah , Benin , the story of this sanctuary is closely tied to the first catholic missionaries in west africa notably Francesco Borghero for his work in Benin (Dahomey) and Nigeria.
Construction of the basilica started in 1903 and was completed in 1909.
It was dedicated in November 1989 by Pope Jean Paull II.
The basilica celebrated its centenary in the present of his holy father Pope Benoît XVI in November 2011.
