Known for its traditional cuisine, Alcochete is famous for its narrow alleys filled with esplanades - on this walking tour, you'll see people cheering and enjoying their meals outside (and many queuing to get a table), amidst the traditional barbecues, where sardines and various other fishes are being grilled. Other typical dishes like choco frito (fried squid) and bacalhau can be seen on the tables, where lively conversations can be heard :)
You'll also explore other areas of Alcochete, like its main church, and the riverside promenade.

Reserva Natural do Estuario do Sado (Setubal)
It is the 1st stop on our trip to algarve. This natural reserve protects the Sado Estuary, a biologically rich area of wetlands extending east and south of Setúbal. With more than 250 avian species, this is a prime spot for birdwatching in Portugal and definitely a highlight of the trip !
Castelo de Sesimbra (Sesimbra)
The Moorish castle of Sesimbra stands high above the pretty fishing village and has guarded the town since its early founding. The castle was one of the first victories for the Christian conquest of Portugal over the Moors in the 12th century and its strategic positioning was important for the defence of early Portugal. For visitors the who make the 230m climb up to the castle will be rewarded of stunning panoramic views over Sesimbra and the surrounding coastline.
Cabo da Roca (The end of the world)
The Cabo da Roca is the wild and rugged headland that marks the most westerly point of mainland Europe. It is a must see for every road trip in Portugal. These windswept cliffs and barren lands were believed to be the edge of the world up until the 14th century, and even today the region possesses a remote and untamed atmosphere. The road on the way there itself is a wonderful trip.
Cabo de São Vicente (Sagres)
Located a few kilometres northwest of Sagres is the historic Cabo de São Vicente (Cape of Saint Vincent) is a craggy, windswept headland at the spot which claims to be the most south-westerly point of mainland Europe. Until the end of the 14th century many believed this place to be the end of the world - come here on the right day and you might think they had a point.
Boca do Inferno (Cascais)
The Boca do Inferno is a unique sea-arch and cliff formation close to the town of Cascais. The coastline to the west of Cascais comprises of high eroded cliffs, battered by the full force of the Atlantic Ocean. The Boca do Inferno was originally a sea cave, which subsequently collapsed leaving a chasm and sea arch. Into this opening the Atlantic waves continually crash, and during violent winter storms water explodes upwards similar to an erupting volcano – hence the overdramatic name of Boca do Inferno (Hell’s Mouth).
Monchique
A Portugal road trip wouldn't me complete... Rising up between the Algarve and neighbouring Alentejo region is the Serra de Monchique, a range of rolling mountains clad in heavy forest. Here you will find the highest point of the trip on the Algarve; standing at 902m (2,959ft) is the peak of Fóia with its all encompassing views which span the Algarve's south and west coasts all the way to Cabo de São Vicente.

Alcochete, Setúbal, Portugal
Alcochete é uma vila portuguesa sede do concelho com o mesmo nome, com cerca de 17 569 habitantes, integrado no distrito de Setúbal, na região de Lisboa e na subregião da Península de Setúbal.
Alcochete é sede da Reserva Natural do Estuário do Tejo, possuindo várias salinas onde nidificam diversas espécies de aves aquáticas.
Em 1469 nasceu em Alcochete o futuro rei D. Manuel I.
Acredita-se que Alcochete terá origem Árabe, principalmente devido a dois factos: A origem do nome Al caxete que poderá significar o forno e pela localização da Igreja Matriz, edificada no século XIV e que, segundo a tradição da época, foi construída sobre um templo árabe.
No entanto a primeira ocupação humana documentada refere-se à presença Romana, através de achados de um centro de olaria onde eram fabricadas ânforas e outros artefactos para acondicionamento e transporte de alimentos. À ocupação romana, sucedeu a ocupação árabe, sendo o topónimo o legado mais visível, desenvolvendo estes na região a agricultura: sistemas de rega por canais e citrinos.
Com a reconquista cristã, Alcochete foi integrada no termo da Ordem de Santiago, sendo destes tempos o desenvolvimento da actividade da extracção do sal, exportado para o sul da Europa, por via marítima.
As constantes pestes (peste negra, v.g.) na capital do Reino, levaram a realeza e a nobreza dos séculos XIV e XV a instalarem-se em Alcochete, nomeadamente o Rei D. João I (finais do século XIV) e o Infante D. Fernando, duque de Beja, (meados do século XV), tendo na vila de Alcochete nascido em 1469 o Infante D. Manuel, posteriormente rei.
A 17 de Janeiro de 1515, Alcochete recebe foral concedido pelo rei D. Manuel I, num diploma conjunto que renova o foral de Aldeia Gallega do Ribatejo (de 1514) e confirma a categoria de Vila que Alcochete havia adquirido ao longo do século XV.
São deste período de esplendor as obras de reconstrução da Igreja Matriz, as pinturas sacras da Capela de Nossa Senhora da Vida e da Igreja da Misericórdia.
Nos séculos XVI a XIX, desenvolve-se no concelho a agricultura, a criação de gado, nomeadamente o gado bravo, instalam-se na vila os Rattons (Jácome Ratton) e atinge grande desenvolvimento a extracção do sal e os transportes marítimos entre as margens do Tejo.
Politicamente, as modas do último quartel do século XIX, com exacerbados movimentos municipalistas centralistas e descentralistas, levaram à perda da autonomia municipal de Alcochete a favor do município da Aldeia Galega (hoje Montijo) e em 15 de Janeiro de 1898 à restauração dessa mesma autonomia municipal.
A história de Alcochete no século XX é de heroísmo humano, de resistência ao regime (o Estado Novo), de greves, de prisões, mas também de estagnação e quase apagamento, mesmo que a partir dos anos 60 se tenham instalado em Alcochete algumas indústrias (papel de alumínio, pneus e embalagens metálicas). Os transportes ferroviários, rodoviários e a ponte sobre o Tejo (Ponte 25 de Abril actualmente) acabaram com a actividade dos transportes marítimos; o sal-gema substituiu o sal marinho; a poluição do Rio Tejo acabou com a abundância de espécies piscícolas.
A Ponte Vasco da Gama, a explosão urbanística e demográfica que lhe sucederam, assim como o complexo desportivo do Sporting Club de Portugal lançaram Alcochete mais uma vez para a ribalta dos acontecimentos e da história.
