I recently purchased 9.2 acres in the San Luis Valley just 20 miles east of Alamosa, Colorado...and I'm planning to do a homestead project soon!
10 INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE SAN LUIS VALLEY
1. With magnificent 100-mile views, San Luis Valley is the largest alpine valley in the world.
2. The Great Sand Dunes National Park is one of Colorado’s four National Parks. It contains the tallest sand dunes in North America!
3. After the sun sets, the Great Sand Dunes National Park transforms into a majestic setting illuminated by the night's sky…as it was recognized as a Dark Sky Park in 2019.
4. Out of the 500 bird species native to Colorado, over 300 can be found in San Luis Valley.
5. The San Luis Valley is nationally known for its potato production.
6. Established in 1858, Fort Garland was once under the command of the legendary Kit Carson. It was abandoned in 1883, but now survives as the Fort Garland Museum.
7. Before written history, native American cultures hunted and gathered in the area 11,000 years ago. Spain claimed the area in the 1500s and established land grants to attract settlers. However, clashes with Comanches left the valley largely unsettled for many years.
8. Gold and silver discoveries near Summitville in 1870 fueled the mining rush to the San Luis Valley. In 1878, the town of Alamosa was founded.
9. In 1921, Adams State College was founded as a teaching college and is now a bachelor and master's degree-granting institution.
10. Whether you’re an outdoor enthusiast, history buff, or wildlife aficionado, the San Luis Valley is such a great place to experience the great outdoors. You can wander through high alpine deserts and dunes, wetlands and lakes, mountains, and forest all within the same afternoon.

► By January 2023, I was already at 2,000 subscribers and counting!

Enjoy a jam-packed day in one of the national parks or ski at one of the largest resorts in the country. Whatever you choose you won’t be disappointed as each of these towns offers stunning views and one-of-a-kind scenery.
Some of the towns on this list are lesser known and include some hidden gems. As a local, I go off the tourist path to find some unique and scenic towns to visit and with little tourist crowds.

Are you planning a trip to Colorado and want to see the GREAT SAND DUNES NATIONAL PARK? Well you are in luck because I have the ULTIMATE guide where I share with you where you should STAY, EAT and what to DO in Alamosa, CO and Great Sand Dunes National Park (GSDNP)!
If you are traveling to Great Sand Dunes National Park, the first order of business is trying to figure out where to stay. Alamosa is the closest city, which is about 30 miles from the GSDNP. In Alamosa, there are large hotel chains to small mom and pop hotels to choose from. We stayed at the Best Western Alamosa, and for the location and price, we couldn't have asked for anything more.
For breakfast, I HIGHLY recommend ROAST Cafe! The google reviews do NOT lie! We had the BEST breakfast and the coffee is roasted in house. I suggest trying the Drooling Moose and Thirsty Bear lattes. They were amazing and drool worthy. The breakfast menu is vast and you really can't go wrong. If you are up to trying the bread pudding french toast, you won't be disappointed!
If you enjoy visiting National Parks, then I suggest investing in the America the Beautiful pass. It is an annual pass that cost $79 and allows you access to ALL National Parks throughout the US!

We take a brief trip through some of the unique place around Alamosa CO. W stopped here to take in the Colorado dunes, the tallest dunes in the United States, got our feet wet hiking in a mountain stream to Zapata Falls, and then discovering a beautiful church in San Luis with the Catholic Stations of the Cross represented in some beautiful statues.
SLIDING down the GREAT SAND DUNES with no board?! (Alamosa, Colorado)
The Great Sand Dunes are a result Colorado’s crazy high mountains, winding rivers, and strong winds and weather. It’s a fun place for the whole family, especially if you rent sand sleds. Even still, without the sand sleds, you can still find ways to goof around and make the more difficult than expected trek up the sand. There are no trails, so you can pick your own path! In this video, we make our way up to High Dune (ironically, it’s only the third highest dune at the park), and Yvonne comes up with an inventive (and budget friendly) way of sliding down the dunes!
