Everything you need to know before you visit Akhaltsikhe – including the best things to do in Akhaltsikhe beyond Rabati Fortress, where to stay, eat, and how to get around.
Akhaltsikhe, the main hub in southern Georgia’s Samtskhe-Javakheti region, is best known for being home to Rabati Castle, the massive 12th-century fortification that gives the surrounding settlement (‘New Castle’ in Georgian) its name.
Beyond Rabati, Akhaltsikhe is a small city by any measure. But it’s still worthy of an overnight stay.
And it does indeed make a very comfortable and convenient base, with Vardzia, Abastumani and a gamut of important fortresses and monasteries all within easy reach.
A short walk through Akhaltsikhe will introduce you to a clutch of religious buildings representing every denomination, a compact and leafy downtown, cute backstreets, and a few nice restaurants. A large number of Armenian and Meskhetian families live in this area, making for an interesting cultural mix.
Beyond the city limits, Vardzia’s cave city, Saro’s cyclopean fortress and countless castles beg to be explored. You’ll also find Meskhetian wineries, a craft brewery where beer is aged in clay amphora, and a host of agritourism projects where you can sample Meskhetian delicacies.

The castle has rich history of various eras and most of the old structures in there are renovated. We hired a service of a professional and experienced guide which I strongly recommend as it is quite educational and informative to know about the synagogue, church, mosque and madrasas and plenty of other structures located in the premise.
We went to the top of the fortress tower after ascending through a series of steps made of stones and finally a spiral staircase made of wooden planks with iron railings that further require 3 or 4 levels of climbing that provides the amazing 360 degree view of the Akhaltsikhe town.
There is a historical museum too in the castle that is a must visit while you are there at an extra cost of GEL 2/- each, that showcases various intriguing artefacts.

Is AKHALTSIKHE Georgia's Greatest City? ????????
Akhaltsikhe might be one of Georgia's most overlooked and underrated cities in my opinion ????????
Were here for the best part of a week and this video is pretty much our first impressions of the small city of Akhaltsikhe here in southwestern Georgia near the borders with both Armenia & Turkey.
We came from Gori and once a day there is a marshrutka running to Borjomi then Akhaltsikhe at 8:30AM and they charged us 20 GEL.
Join us in checking out this beautiful place, we show you the super guesthouse we're staying in (Zukas Hause) for really cheap 30 GEL with amazing castle and city views, walk the local streets, visit an Armenian bakery, head over the river to a friendly coffee shop before heading off up into the hills overlooking Akhaltsikhe where a beautiful Armenian Church sits.

GEORGIAN Snack Hunt In Akhaltsikhe And Climbing Rabati Castle ????????
Sunday morning here in the Georgian city of Akhaltsikhe and we are off in search of some Meskhetian classics such as mulberry churchkela which I hear is a specialty of the region.
Not going to lie we did not find what we were after and the market wasn't too great but oh well it is what it is everywhere can't be the best!
We still had a decent day in the end though and tried a new style of khachapuri native to the region called penovani khachapuri which was super cheap and quite tasty.
Oh and in the evening we headed up to the famous rabati castle here in Akhaltsikhe which you can see from all over the city, we climbed one of the castle towers for stunning 360 degree views over the landscapes and it was free entry to the first section of the castle grounds so good news all round!
Again Akhaltsikhe is an underrated travel destination here in Georgia, yeah there's lots of famous tourist sites around the city but the actual city itself is also beautiful with small town feels and really friendly Georgians, well worth spending your time here we stayed the best part of a week and loved the place ????????

This Giant Castle is the Largest in Georgia!
Located in the southern part of Georgia. Akhaltsikhe (Rabati) Castle is a medieval fortress with the construction that started in the 9th century and completed in the 12th. It carries a diverse history with Georgian, Ottoman, and Russian rule. The castle was reconstructed in 2012 and now serves as the main tourist attraction in Samtskhe–Javakheti region.

If you get to come to Georgia after COVID19 pandemic you should definitely check out the Rabati fortress in Akhaltsikhe. Originally built in the 9th century but reconstructed and finished in 2012 This place is 45 minutes away from Borjomi and it has some really cool views and sites to check out.!

Georgia and Armenia | Exploring Beautiful Akhaltsikhe, Rabat, Vardzia, And Gyumri | Travel Vlog
We started in Akhaltsikhe. After breakfast we had a guided excursion to Rabat fortress, which included Sargis Jakeli castle of 14th c., Fortress Church (late Middle Ages), an 18th century Palace and the Church of Saint Marine (1865) with built-in relief works.
Next, we headed to Vardzia cave monastery and town established in 12 c. during the reign of King George III and his daughter Queen Tamar. As Javakheti was a barrier separating the rest of Georgia from Muslim world and was often attacked by enemies, thus a massive complex was built for defensive as well as monastic purposes. Along the River Mtkvari there were several historical and architectural monuments. After the Georgian-Armenian border, we changed transport and guides. We then moved to Gyumri, the second biggest city in Armenia. We walked through its historical center (Alexandropol) that has many traditional 19th-century houses and visited a museum located in one of them.
