What really happened to Nigeria Billion dollar steel company

In today’s video, we take a trip to Ajaokuta a community in Kogi State, Nigeria to find out the true state of Ajaokuta Steel Company.
What really happened to this billion-dollar steel factory that should have changed the fortune of Nigeria.
Let’s find out (Black)
In 1973, Iron Ore of required quality was discovered in Itakpe in Kogi State Nigeria, subsequently The National Iron Ore Mining Company (NIOMCO) was founded in 1979 along with Ajaokuta Steel Company.
The mission of NIOMCO was to explore iron ore in various parts of the country, process and supply the iron ore concentrates to the Ajaokuta Steel Company, from where steel and liquid still are produced. So essentially NIOMCO will be doing the mining of iron ore, while Ajaokuta Steel will be doing the processing of iron ore to steel.
To construct the Ajaokuta steel complex, in 1979 Under a Cooperation agreement between Nigeria and the then Soviet Union The construction of the Ajaokuta Steel Company started.
The construction was expected to be completed in 7 years, that is from 1979 to 1986.
Different companies were involved in the construction of different components of the project, however a Russian firm called Technoproexport in short (TPE) were the main architect and project managers of the project.
Unfortunately, President Shagari government which started the project in 1979 was overthrown in 1983 in a coup and another government took over and the project was never completed in 1986 as planned
Walkthough talk….

15 years later in 1994, the Russian firm completed the project to 98% and needed Nigeria government to meet up with its 2% contractual obligations, Unfonately, that never happened, so the company abandoned the project and left Nigeria in 1994.

The company then demanded for $2.5bn compensation for the work they have put into establishing Ajaokuta steel, after long negotiation, it was agreed that they be paid $500m with the plans that they will be re-invited to complete the works.
Also as at the time the Russian Firm TPE left Nigeria, they did not handover the detail Master Plan to the Nigerian government, because they were still expecting to be invited to complete the work
However instead of recalling the original builders of the factory for completion, in 2004 the Nigerian govt now led by President Obasanjo leased the project to Solgas Energy, an American firm.
Shortly after leasing Ajaokuta steel to the solgas, sighting non-performance, the contract was revoked and given to an Indian company called Global Steel Holdings.
Unfonately the Indian company Global Steel, did nothing significant in getting the place to work either

So in 2007 After President Musa Yaradua took over from Obasanjo, he terminate the concession given to Global Steel accusing the Indian company of asset stripping and faulting the agreement to be largely skewed in favor of the Indians.
The president also ordered that the Indian company be investigated for corruption and assent stripping. Well as you know, president yaradua government did not last that long, and the investigation he ordered to be conducted nerve happened.

Well, the Indian company however sue Nigeria govt claiming they spent $500 million on the project.

Driving Around Africa's Confluence City Lokoja, Kogi State Nigeria

Formerly the capital of Kabba province, Lokoja was part of Kwara from 1967 to 1991, when it became the capital of the newly formed state of Kogi. The modern town is a collecting point for cotton, leather, and palm oil and kernels, which are shipped to the Niger delta ports of Burutu and Warri for export.

Kaduna in Nigeria, crocodile city , Kaduna river, hotels, castle, industrial center , textiles

Kaduna in Nigeria, crocodile city

Kaduna is the state capital of Kaduna State in north-western Nigeria, on the Kaduna River, is a trade center and a major transportation hub for the surrounding agricultural areas with its rail and road junction. The population of Kaduna was at 760,084 as of the 2006 Nigerian census. Rapid urbanization over the past decade has created an increasingly large population, now estimated to be around 1.3 million. Kaduna's name derives from the Hausa word kada for crocodile (kaduna being the plural form)Kaduna is an industrial center of Northern Nigeria, manufacturing products like textiles, machinery, steel, aluminium, petroleum products and bearings. However, the textile industry has been declining because of factory closings due to neglect during military rule and competition with Chinese imports. Automobile manufacturing also remains an important part of Kaduna's economy.[2] Pottery is highly prized from Kaduna, especially from the Nok culture, which precedes Abuja and Minna. Other light manufactures include: plastics, pharmaceuticals, leather goods, furniture, and televisions.[4] Some of the main agricultural exports include: cotton, peanuts, sorghum, and ginger.[10]
One of Nigeria's four main oil refineries is located in Kaduna. It is supplied by a pipeline from the Niger Delta oil fields.[4]
A 2009 World Bank survey states that Kaduna is one of the top six cities with the highest unemployment. 20% of the population is estimated to be unemployed.[2]
The main highway through the city is called Ahmadu Bello Way. Many of the place names come from past sultans, emirs and decorated Civil War heroes. Kaduna has a large market, recently rebuilt after an extensive fire in the mid-1990s.
There is a large racecourse, approximately 1.6 kilometres (1 mi) round, inside which the Ahmadu Yakubu Polo Club and Kaduna Crocodile Club are situated, whilst the Kaduna and Rugby Clubs are on the periphery.
There are two airports, one of which is Kaduna Airport. Chanchangi Airlines has its head office in Kaduna.[11]
Kaduna also has a branch of the Nigerian Stock Exchange.[4]

A drive + dances in Warri, Nigeria 1983 (English subtitles)

My in VHS recorded video shows a drive in the city of Warri (Delta State) in Nigeria in 1983. Warri city is one of the major hubs of petroleum activities and businesses in the southern Nigeria. It has grown from being a rural area to an urban area now. I have added some dances recorded the same year during a celebration of DSC (Delta Steel Company).

Inside Africa’s Model Mega-City Lagos Nigeria ????????#lagos #theseekerghana #accra #sunsetdronegh

Lagos State (Yoruba: Ìpínlẹ̀ Èkó) is a state in southwestern Nigeria. Of the 36 states, it is both the most populous and smallest in area. Bounded to the south by the Bight of Benin and to the west by the international border with Benin Republic, Lagos State borders Ogun State to the east and north making it the only Nigerian state to border only one other state. Named for the city of Lagos—the most populous city in Africa—the state was formed from the Western Region and the former Federal Capital Territory on 27 May 1967.

Geographically, Lagos State is dominated by bodies of water with nearly a quarter of the state's area being lagoons, creeks, and rivers. The largest of these bodies are the Lagos and Lekki lagoons in the state's interior with the Ogun and Osun rivers flowing into them. Many other rivers and creeks flow throughout the state and serve as vital means of transportation for people and goods. On land, non-urbanized areas are within the tropical Nigerian lowland forests ecoregion with natural areas containing threatened populations of mona monkey, tree pangolin, and hooded vulture along with a transitory population of African bush elephants.

Nigeria | Abuja Light Rail 2019

Abuja Light Rail

OMG Abuja goes metro. I couldnt believe my eyes when I saw the clips on the Abuja light Rail. I wanted to get a first hand experience of what riding the metro in Nigeria was like.

The Abuja Light Rail is the first Light rail in the country and it was launched last year in July. It is still in the early stages but when fully functional it should connect various areas of the city.
