The Mystery Behind Agulu Lake And The Temple
We came face to face with the feared temple of Agulu Lake.
Agulu Lake is one of the nicest scenes to behold in Anambra state with the water stretching as far as the eyes can see while standing on a constructed bridge by former governor Peter Obi.
The Lake has served as tourist center to foreigners, non-indigenes and students, especially, those in the secondary institutions.The Lake is located along Awka road in Agulu, Aniocha Local Government Area of the state. A potential tourist site, it is home to an estimated three hundred crocodiles and water turtles.
Fishing is not allowed on the lake and the crocodiles, being sacred animals to the people, cannot be killed. Legend says that these crocodiles were instrumental in delivering the town from enemy soldiers during the Nigerian civil war.It is believed that these sacred crocodiles and turtles transformed themselves into beautiful ladies and lured the soldiers unawares into the lake where they disappeared without trace. At noon the crocodiles and the turtles appear at the banks of the lake to take in sunlight.
Anambra state which is one of the states that has traditional attractions such as scared streams, lake, with potentials for investment and tourism development of which Agulu Lake is one. Agulu Lake is not a common lake; it is traditionally inclined, and it has cultural landmarks and is believed to be possessed by evil spirits

The Most Popular Tourist Attraction In Ondo State, Nigeria
Visiting the less than three-kilometre hilltop of Oke Maria (Mary's Hill), for the first-timer, is not a child’s play as one needs to take a break along the journey to the mountain top in at least one or two resting places. But despite this, visitors keep thronging this sacred hill, where prayers are answered and solutions are provided to most challenges.
The Oke Maria hill has become an annual pilgrimage centre to Catholic and non-Catholic every February. Visitors from Nigeria and abroad come to pay homage to the Blessed Virgin every second week of February. But other people usually visit the place day in day out apart from the annual pilgrimage in February.

Ogbunike cave is such and amazing cave and a tour around the cave is quite an adventure.
The cave played a significant role in protecting the Biafrans during the Nigerian Civil War.
Ogbunike cave is sacred and so is everything found in it. The water found in the cave is said to have great healing powers. It also gives a range of protection to people who drink it.
The steps leading down into the cave is 312 in number.
Words can't actually explain how amazing the cave is. Anambra state is really blessed for having such an amazing tourist attraction.

Instructions to adhere to when visiting the Ogbunike caves
These guidelines must be followed
○All visitors must remove their shoes before entering the cave
○Women who are on their period are not into the cave
○You cannot exit the cave through the same entrance you came in from.
The 337 steps was built by the Anambra state government in the 90s. There is an open space at the end of the walk-way which is used as a reception point, where traditionally visitors are expected to remove their shoes.
The main cave consists of large structure windows with a wide-open chamber about 5 m in height, 10 m wide and a 30 m long entrance. The main chamber has ten tunnels leading in different directions. Inside the tunnel are large chambers and other tunnels of various lengths, some of which are internally connected.
Ogbunike Caves is linked with traditions and people have been using it for many centuries; The site still retains its historical, and spiritual importance. The biodiversity of the site has been almost a trick. The integrity of the site can be attested to by the presence of primary forests around the caves.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka also called UNIZIK or NAU in short is a Federal university in Nigeria. It consists of four campuses in Anambra State. Its main campus is located in the capital of Anambra State, Awka while three other campuses are located in Nnewi , Agulu and Ifite-Ogwuari, Anambra State. It is one of the federal universities which are overseen and accredited by the National Universities Commission. The university is named after Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe.

Awhum Waterfalls is located in Enugu State, Nigeria. It's a hidden and unspoiled gift of nature and should be on your to do list when you visit Nigeria.
WHAT TO KNOW:
The waterfall is managed by the Awhum Monastery. You will need to check-in the monastery. At the monastery, you will be assigned a guide to take you to the waterfall. There is no fee for the guide, but tip the guide on return. Also, on return from the waterfall, you'll be given an envelope by the monastery caretaker to make a donation.

We stayed 2 nights at Best Choice Hotel & Suites, Enugu. Hotel is new and well maintained. Distance from Enugu city to Awhum waterfall is 40 minutes drive. Use Google Maps to search for Awhum Waterfall and follow the directions. The road from Enugu to the waterfall was mostly good. The last 5 kilometers was dirt road with potholes. Drive slowly and you can access with no issue. The directions are a little off at the last 1 Kilometer as it takes you to the village outside the monastery. Ask in the village, and they'll give you directions for the last kilometer.
THE HIKE:
The hike from the monastery to the waterfall is about 90 minutes. It goes slowly downhill. A good portion of the hike is through a stream. You can go through the streat barefoot, but best to wear water shoes due to small rocks. Plastic sandals will do just fine. We bought water shoes from Amazon. (
WHAT I WOULD DO DIFFERENTLY:
1. Instead of spending the night in Enugu city, spend the night at the monastery. For a very reasonable price, they provide 3 meals and beds.
2. Take towels to dry after the waterfall.
3. Extra dry cloths
4. Sunscreen
5. Hat or face cap
6. Waterproof camera
7. Waterproof bag to keep valuables dry.
8. Insect repellant - nothing to worry about, but a good-to-have.
WHAT NOT TO MISS:
Mount Calvary hike - this is an uphill hike with Christian sculptures to admire along the hike. It's 30 - 40 minutes hike uphill. You will be rewarded with tremendous views when you reach the top of the hill. Mount Calvary hike path starts right outside Awhum Monastery. Ask the guards to show you the hike path.
