1) White Tower of Thessaloniki
The present tower replaced an old Byzantine fortification, that the Ottoman Empire reconstructed to fortify the city's fortress after Sultan Murad II captured Thessaloniki in 1430. During that time, White Tower became a notorious prison and scene of mass executions.
2) Heptapyrgion Fortress
This fortress has towered over the city of Thessaloniki for over 1,000 years. It was first constructed during the Byzantine era and rebuilt by the Ottomans after they conquered the city in the 1400s. Heptapyrgion mean fortress of seven towers. It's a bit of a misnomer, though, as the fortress actually has 10 towers.
3) Thessaloniki Rotunda
The Rotunda is one of the most important Roman monuments in Thessaloniki. It is also known as the Church of Agios Georgios. The cylindrical structure was built in 306 AD by the Roman Tetrarch Galerius, who intended it to be his grave.
Eventually, Galerius died in 311 AD and he was buried in Felix Romuliana, Modern Serbia. IN the 4th century AD, the Byzantine Emperor Constantine I converted to an Orthodox church and many frescoes were painted inside.
4) Church of Agios Dimitrios
This is Thessaloniki's largest church and the main sanctuary dedicated to its patron saint, Agios Dimitrios. It stands on the presumed site of his Martyrdom C 306.
5) Thessaloniki's Seaside Promenade
Thessaloniki's seaside promenade is one of the city's most famous and popular spots, which lies in the shore of the Thermaic Gulf and covers a distance of about 5 kilometres. The city's promenade is easily accessible both by bus or on foot from the city's centre.
The Umbrellas is a 20-year-old work of art of Giorgios Zongolopoulos. The sculpture was made in 1997 when Thessaloniki was the European capital of culture. Each umbrella is about 42 feet (13 metres) tall and slightly tilted.
