WALES: Rotherham Parish #20 of 31

Don't be fooled by the name of this place, you are still firmly in England, although the name of the village which gives this parish it's name is thought to originate from the country of the same name.

You won't find any rolling Welsh valleys or snow capped peaks, nor will you find the locals speaking a language different to English. Trust me, there are no words beginning with LL around here.

What you will find though is our first look at a railway station on this channel, and like London buses, two come along at once! You'll also find a lovely country park - South Yorkshire's biggest no less - in the West of the parish, not to mention the Community Woodland that has sprung up as a result of the local colliery being closed.

There was a ton of other things to see here, so I will let this near 20 minute video do the talking.

You might not find any flags bearing a red dragon around here, but I promise you, you are in WALES.

BRODSWORTH: Doncaster Parish #38 of 43

Now we come to a parish that for some reason I have avoided doing for a long time. I really don't understand why though. This is a complicated parish and one that was tricky to film to all honesty, but quite honestly, now it's done, looking back on it, it wasn't that hard to do, even if it did require moving the car a lot and not spending much time on foot.

You see, this one's boundaries were once very different. The Model Village at Woodlands which is now part of the unparished Adwick-le-Street, used to fall within them here, because the colliery that was once here needed homes for the workers in the pit. Woodlands was considered too large and was cut from the parish in 1915.

What remained were some strange boundaries, incorporating three tiny villages and part of a Doncaster suburb, which is shared between this parish and Sprotbrough & Cusworth. In fact, recent developments mean that even the ALDI store in the area is shared by the two parishes. In all honesty, the boundaries likely moved when it was built, but Google Maps still defines them as rigidly as ever.

The parish has some interesting features. There's a woodland area where the colliery once stood, an 11th century church, two schools, part of a famous Roman road, and of course a majestic Victorian Hall owned once by Charles Thellusson, which is now and English Heritage site.

Make no mistake, this is a complicated part of Doncaster, but it's also a nice parish to the West of the town. This is the parish of BRODSWORTH.

HOLTBY: York Parish #10 of 31

YORK PARISH #10: HOLTBY

Holtby, in the City of York, lies just off the A166, 5 miles north east of the city centre. The road follows the crest of a prominent ridge, part of the York Terminal Moraine.

Holtby was likely settled thanks it being on that high ground, which was once surrounded by wetlands. There has been a human settlement here for centuries, evidenced in many ways

There’s an Iron Age barrow in fields to the north which suggests pre-Roman inhabitants. The name is of Scandinavian origin – it literally means Coppice village. That tells us the Vikings were present here

In the Domesday Book its recorded as Boltbei. Farming used to be a major part of life in the village. It has around 50 houses, most of which have generous gardens, ranging from the traditional cottage style to expansive lawns.

Its not inaccurate to say that everywhere you look there’s greenery. Trees, hedges and natural verges soften the brickwork of the cottages here

I think the village is best summed up by a line in a document I found called the Holtby Village Design Statement, which was produced by the very people who live here. It simply says:

“We the people of Holtby think our village is a very special place. It’s a typical Yorkshire village, but it also has something unique about it”. After walking around this one, I find it hard to disagree with that

This is Holtby folks, let’s get walking!

BURGHWALLIS: Doncaster Parish #15 of 43

There are villages that are beautiful. There are ones which are well maintained. There are ones that are loved and respected by everybody, regardless of whether or not you live there. Then you have this place, which is all three and then some.

Make no mistake, the parish council in charge of this ancient village pull out all the stops to make sure this is welcoming to everybody, resident or not. The village's rich history is preserved as well through various examples of old artefacts like the village pump, still visible in all it's glory on the old village street. The parish even has a road that is linked to the French Revolution by way of it's name, and make no mistake about it, The Abbe's Walk tale is one that you definitely will not find in every video on this channel.

It might be small, but what it has, it makes the most of. Many parishes can say they have a logo, or a symbol, or an emblem but how many can say they have their own village flag, flying proudly above the cenotaph in the centre? I think you would only need the fingers of one hand.

Joined at the hip with Hampole via Robin's Hood's Well being on the border of the two, you won't find many places with the same amount of quirky little features.

Once home to Jeremy Clarkson, click on this video and for the next nine minutes, treat yourself to the delights of the lovely BURGHWALLIS.

LANGSETT: Barnsley Parish #8 of 17

South Yorkshire is a varied part of the country. In the South West of the county, you'll find the bustling urban metropolis of the City of Sheffield, with it's almost conjoined twin brother Rotherham in much the same vein, a busy industrial town. Both have been forged through a long history of steel working and coal mining. Up in the North East, it's a much more rural affair, where the main businesses are agricultural, in and around places like Thorne and Hatfield.

In the South East, you'll find some of the more upmarket and trend setting settlements like Bawtry, located on land that's pretty much bang flat and is an opening to the relative wilderness that is the Northern Nottinghamshire district of Bassetlaw.

There is absolutely nowhere in the county though, quite like the North Western corner, the very edge of Barnsley borough, where the broad flat lands suddenly start to turn into steep gradients. Villages become much further away from each other, fields become moorlands, and above all, the weather becomes much more severe when it's bad.

This is where the Peak District begins, one of the UK's National Parks, and in this parish., we walk right on the boundary as it runs down the side of an impressive mile-long reservoir. The Dark Peak as it is known to locals due to the vast expanse of peaty moorlands is a wild, uninhabitable wilderness, but in one small corner of the area this parish covers there is a nice little village with a pub famous for it's pies, and an unmistakable feeling that you are somewhere unlike anywhere else in South Yorkshire.

That village, and the parish around it, goes by the name of LANGSETT.
