Faifa in Jazan Province, Saudi Arabia
A detailed video of the drive up to and experience of Faifa in Jazan Province, Saudi Arabia.
Faifa, often written as Fayfa or even Fifa, is a refreshing lush green hill station built on mountain slopes with cool temperatures. I must admit not many people know about it even in Saudi Arabia. After living here for six years, I had never heard about it until I started planning this trip.
Driving from Jazan city, Faifa is 100 kms with an elevation gain of 1500m, more than 1000 meters in the last 30 kms to the top. Steep switch backs where one cannot and should not divert their concentration from driving to the views takes one to the hill station. Though Al Faifa looks like a single mountain, it is actually several hills wrapped around each other. At the top as I got out of my car, the first thing I noticed was the cool fresh air. Second was the green mountains all around me. From the top, one can notice the steep roads that connect the dwellings on these hills.
The mountains of Faifa are a part of the Sarawat range, one that runs parallel to the Red Sea coast and passes through the provinces of Hejaz, Aseer and Jazan (including Faifa) into Yemen. Though the range is mostly rocky and volcanic, it is alive and fertile at Faifa. The inhabitants of these slopes rely on its fertile soil to grow fruits, vegetables and even coffee. Some of these plants and its fruits can be found at the road side. The mountains receive sufficient rain fall in the monsoon season due to their location in the South, roughly 10 kms from Yemen border.
Faifa is also known to produce quality honey. Here at Faifa one can visit the traditional Souq such as the Nafi’a and Haqou markets where local, mostly organic products are available. The hill station is popular for its agricultural terraces and its heritage cylindrical houses.

The mountain retreat of Abha is high in the Saudi mountains - in fact, it's home to Al Soudah, the highest point in Saudi Arabia at 3,015 meters above sea level.
It's also home to some of the nicest people we've met in our travels through Saudi Arabia.
Join us today as we visit Al Habala Hanging Village, Al Muftaha Art Village, The Tuesday Market and Al Soudah.
We also had the opportunity to tour a new cultural restaurant that will be opening soon, and had lunch at Abu El Abed, which may be home to the best Shawarma ever (and I've eaten quite a few shawarmas). Dinner was at a Turkish Restaurant called Tolie.

Soudah (Arabic: ٱلسّوْدَة), is a mountainous area in the Asir region of Saudi Arabia. At 3,015 metres (9,893 ft) above sea level, the area is known for its dense juniper tree covered mountains.
The area is currently experiencing sustainable development undertaken by the Public Investment Fund (PIF) owned Soudah Development Company (SDC). SDC aims to drive the development of Soudah and parts of Rijal Alma’a Governate to create a luxury mountain destination through investment in the infrastructure, advancing the entertainment, residential and commercial sectors, while increasing access to its unique culture, national treasures and heritage sites.
Climate
The climate of Soudah is moderate throughout the year with temperatures rarely exceeding 25 °C (77 °F) in the summer and not rising to more than 15 °C (59 °F) in the winter. Due to Soudah's altitude, the climate is around 10 °C (18 °F) cooler than the rest of Saudi Arabia.
Overall, the area enjoys a cool variation of semi-arid climate (BSk) that borders a regionally rare warm-summer Mediterranean climate (Csb) due to the presence of a brief yet unnoticeable wet season that lasts from February to April.
Tourism
The town is a tourist center, and has a cable car[1] to the top of the mountain.[2] Some people in the area claim to have seen snow fall in more than one season per year.
Culture
Soudah has a distinct culture, geography and its verdant nature that differs slightly from other parts of Saudi Arabia. The dress of the region is unique, traditionally women in Soudah have been known to wear colourful headbands and the men flower head wreaths.
Soudah Season
Soudah Season is a part of the Saudi Seasons initiative. In 2019, Soudah Season took place in July and its activities were implemented in the Soudah highlands, forests and cultural and historical places.[3]

Jabal Shada:
Dates beyond the Cambrian Period, Jabal Shada or the Shada Mountain formation, are some of the highest peaks in the Kingdom at 2,300 meters.
“Shada” means to “rise” or “soar”, so it is a meaning that fits the dense green mountains perfectly.
The giant granite rocks resting on the very top are what makes this place different from others. In Arabic they are given the name “Nadba,” almost appearing to touch the sky at an altitude of 200 meters.
Visitors may come across peculiar grottos and caves that are the result of erosion that has taken place over the course of centuries.
These caves were created by gases exiting igneous rocks and leaving apertures that coincidentally suited human civilizations and were used as dwellings.
Engravings and traces of early civilizations have been found in the caves, giving archaeologists and researchers important and priceless information about the past.
Houses of Jabal Shada Al-Asfal are found at astounding altitudes. They are made of rocks that are extremely difficult to reach due to their location, and are a true piece of Saudi heritage and give valuable insight into the history of the land.
Shada Mountain has been given the status of Natural Reserve by the Saudi Wildlife Authority. The reserve is known for the largest variety of flora in the region. There are approximately 500 plant species reported in this reserve. The Arabian leopard, one of the endangered species, is inhabiting this reserve. There are other species in this reserve including Arabian wolf, caracal, rock fox, striped hyaena and genet.

Habala (Arabic: ٱلْحَبَلَة, romanized: Al-Ḥabalah) is a small mountain village in 'Asir Region of Saudi Arabia. It can be reached by car from Abha within one hour. It is located in a vally 300 yards below the peak of the front mountain. It was originally inhabited by a tribal community known as the flower men because of their custom of wearing garlands of dried herbs and flowers in their hair. In the past, the village was only accessible by rope ladder, and in fact, the name Habala comes from the Arabic word for rope. They were supposedly fleeing the Turks at the time of the Ottoman Empire.
In the 1990s, during a push to promote tourism in the region, a cable car was built to provide access to the traditional village with its stark mountain views. In consequence, however, the local flower men were dispossessed of their homes and forced to move into a modern village created for them in the valley below. When they refused to move, they were evacuated forcibly by the Saudi Arabian National Guard. Today, some of the original inhabitants are allowed back up to the village, but only to perform their traditional dances for tourists during the summer months. The village had already been evacuated, and no one was living there. Therefore, it was already empty in 1990 when the cable car was built. A more likely story is that because they were no longer suffering from persecution from the Ottomons, and life in the area was now safe, they had no reason to live in such as inaccessible place.

Located around 120 kilometers east of Hail city, Fayd is a major archaeological and historical site known since pre-islamic times. Considered as one of the most ancient villages in Arabian Peninsula, it was the third city of the old pilgrimage route “Darb Zubaidah” — after Kufa and Basra — and the largest station on the pilgrimage route used by millions of Iraqi pilgrims for their once-in-a-lifetime Hajj journey to the holy city of Makkah.
Foundations of the castle are located in the northern part of the fort which were built in regular forms using volcanic stones commonly found in the city. Some architectural forms and objects such as basins were also carved from volcanic rock.
The archaeological site of Fayd brings its visitors back to the time when Arabian desert was travelled by walking merchants and pilgrims. Located halfway between Baghdad and Mecca the oasis of Fayd was at the most strategic location along the the famous road Darb Zubaydah, named after the princess who had a prominent role in the improvements of the facilities along the road. The oasis that benefited from underground water and cisterns collecting rainwater attracted pilgrims and merchants who converged to this oasis for more than five centuries.

Rijal Alma flashbacks in our minds whenever we talk about traditional Arabian architectures. The village is not only famous for the magnificent views offered by its colourful houses but also for its historical significance.
Located at a distance of about 50 km from Abha, capital of Asir Region, this ancient village was used to be a natural passage that linked between Yemen, Makkah, Madinah and Levant. After the birth of Islam, it became an important stop for Yemeni pilgrims on their way to Makkah for Hajj. Around sixty South Arabian traditional palaces built of stone, clay and wood talk about the wealth the village accumulated off passing caravans.
Upon reaching Rijal Alma a traveller finds there a place rich in history and tradition which is now turned to one of the most popular tourist attractions in Asir with the most stunning surprises hidden inside its walls. After passing through the sculpted doors, each dark stone building turns out to be the jewellery box containing of a treasure.
