Butler Flats Lighthouse, New Bedford, MA 4K
Butler Flats Light is a sparkplug lighthouse located in the outer harbor of New Bedford, Massachusetts, at the mouth of the Acushnet River. Built-in 1898 by the United States Lighthouse Board, it is the only known caisson lighthouse designed by a marine architect. The light was added to the National Register of Historic Places as Butler Flats Light Station on June 15, 1987. Automated in 1978, it is now operated by the city as a private aid to navigation.

History of New Bedford - Whitman Mills Historic Walking Tour
Join Bruce Barnes as he leads us on this New Bedford Preservation Society tour around the Whitman Mills historic properties and learn their significance in the New Bedford textile industry. Discover their important innovations, including the automatic loom, one of the most significant advancements in the history of mill technology.
The Whitman group of cotton mills was the first group of mills in New Bedford founded and financed by people that reside outside New Bedford. They included the original Whitman Mill (1895), the Manomet (1903), the Nonquitt (1906), and the Nashawena (1909). Located in the north end of New Bedford, these were among the largest and most innovative of the New Bedford mill properties.

History of Textiles in New Bedford Massachusetts Walking Tour
Generally thought of as the Whaling City, the textile industry is equally important to the development of New Bedford. Starting with the first Wamsutta Mill, which started operation in 1848, the industry peaked around 1920, when New Bedford had numerous mills boasting some 150 mill buildings that employed over 35,000 workers.
Join Bruce Barnes as he guides us through this fascinating history, from its beginning to the collapse of the industry in the late 1920s. Though it is among the smallest state parks in Massachusetts Fort Phoenix is packed with things to see and do. Located at the mouth of the Acushnet River on the state's south coast Fort Phoenix has roots all the way back to the American Revolution. It was a manned fort through the Civil War and became a state park in the 1920's. In addition to swimming there is also the opportunity to walk on the country's largest hurricane barrier. Welcome to my series of discovering Massachusetts. I will travel to every town and city in Massachusetts showcasing the history, natural beauty and uniqueness of every one of our towns and cities. There are a total of 351 towns and cities in the state of Massachusetts.
On a late December day I decided to head down towards the south coast of Massachusetts. I explored the cities and towns adjacent to Buzzards Bay. Having never been to the region I was excited to discover all I could. I visit the forts and shipyards of New Bedford and Fairhaven to the quiet coastal beaches in Dartmouth and Westport.

Fort Phoenix is a former American Revolutionary War-era fort located at the entrance to the Fairhaven-New Bedford harbor, south of U.S. 6 in Fort Phoenix Park in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. The fort was originally built in 1775 without a name, and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972. Just off the fort, in Buzzards Bay, was the first naval engagement of the American Revolution, the Battle off Fairhaven on 14 May 1775.
On 5–6 September 1778, the fort was destroyed by the British when they raided the harbor. A force under Major Israel Fearing drove off the British, both at the fort and when they attempted an attack on the town the next day. The fort was then renamed Fort Fearing. In 1784 it was given the name Fort Phoenix after the mythical bird that rose from its own ashes.
The fort was rebuilt in 1798, and rebuilt again in 1808 with 12 guns with Commonwealth resources, contemporary with but not part of the second system of US fortifications.
In the War of 1812, HMS Nimrod bombarded the fort on 13 June 1814 when the local militia refused to surrender some guns. After an exchange of fire Nimrod sailed away. Local accounts differ as to whether she launched boats carrying a landing party that were driven off, or not. This event is confused in some references with an attack by the same ship on Falmouth on 29 January 1814.
The fort currently has five iron cannons mounted on reproduction wooden carriages. The cannons are Model 1819 24-pounders. Their trunnions are marked, “W.F.” on one side and “1828” on the opposite side, indicating they were cast at the West Point Foundry in Cold Spring, New York, in the year 1828. They were installed at the fort sometime before the Civil War along with three similar guns which were later transferred out of the fort near the end of the war.
There is also a smaller cannon at the fort which was captured by the Continental Marines during the raid on Nassau in the Bahamas in 1776. This raid was the first amphibious landing on foreign soil by United States Marines. This gun has been in Fairhaven since about 1777 and one of those originally installed when the fort was built.
In recent years, two more cannons, mounted on field artillery carriages have been installed at the fort. Donated to the Town of Fairhaven by the New Bedford Whaling Museum, the barrels of the guns are thought to date to the War of 1812, but they have no direct connection to Fort Phoenix. The fort was rebuilt with a new powder magazine and regarrisoned with eight guns in the Civil War. During World War II an Anti-Motor Torpedo Boat (AMTB) battery of four towed 37 mm guns was at the fort. Today, historical encampments are staged at Fort Phoenix in the spring and fall by a local reenacting group, the Fairhaven Village Militia.

Round trip on Charles M. Braga Jr. Memorial Bridge also known as Braga Bridge or The Braga. This mile long span connects Somerset and Fall River, MA. Truss style bridge carries Interstate 195 over the Taunton River at Mount Hope Bay. It is a landmark along the route to Cape Cod; some days vehicle traffic is over 100,000. Length of the span has suicide fences. Original lime green color was replaced with dark blue. Cooling towers in the distance look nuclear but serve a coal fired plant at Brayton Point. Braga was a Fall River resident killed in attack on Pearl Harbor.

Most people think of New Bedford as the Whaling City, which it was. But, it was also a leading cotton textile capital during the Industrial Revolution. At its peak around 1920, New Bedford had numerous mills with some 150 mill buildings employing over 35,000!

One of the most interesting experiments of that era was the Howland Mill, which started operation in 1888. Founded by William D. Howland, a descendant of one of the most important and influential New Bedford whaling families, the Mill was extremely innovative and progressive. Most mills provided employees with only tenement-style housing, but Howland purchased land in an undeveloped area of New Bedford and created a cohesive community where everyone, not only mill managers, could be housed in set back stand-alone houses with yards and services where everyone could live in comfort and dignity; the first urban industrial utopia.
Join Bruce as he guides us through the history of textile manufacturing in New Bedford and leads us through the Howland Mill and Village, which still has many of the original houses.

Sconticut Neck Fairhaven MA
PLACE STAYED AT FOR THE SUMMER
The Indian name Sconticut, meaning Place stayed at for the Summer
Surrounded by the ocean on three sides, Sconticut Neck of Fairhaven is one of the largest peninsulas in Buzzards Bay.
Neckers as they are referred to, occupy this once vast farm land. They also rule the roost with Precinct 5, the largest of Fairhaven's six Precincts.
The quarter-mile nick name is also the unofficial drag strip in town, with the skid marks to prove it. This is the only gateway to and from West Island and Wilbur Point on land. Most of the farmland in the foreground is preserved, including *Shipyard Farm to the right.
*ML's Note: You have to dodge some cow manure, to get through to the shoreline on the east side. The field is still used to harvest hay.

Come out for a fun evening of holiday festivities on Sunday, December 6th at 6:00 pm (new time!) for Windsor’s annual holiday Torchlight Parade.
The Torchlight parade includes holiday-lighted vehicles and marchers who process through town with lights, music, and fanciful decorations! Grab a spot near the street to watch the brightly decorated fire trucks parade by in their holiday glory.
Masks and 12-foot social distance between households, which will be conveniently marked off, will be required. The parade route starts at Windsor High School, goes down Capen Street, and then on Broad Street to the center of town. Let’s stay safe and enjoy!
