Abbey Wood. A quiet district, ten miles east of Charing Cross both inside the Royal Borough of Greenwich and the borough of Bexley.

There is some confusion over whether Bexley is still considered Kent. As history has shown us, all suburban districts immediately circling the City Wall are absorbed into the capital over time as industry advances and population increases. The e-r of Greater London doesn't stop.

Every part of London sprang to life after the arrival of the railway system. It revolutionised urban life tremendously by growing existing communities and birthing new interconnected ones.

Abbey Wood's train station has recently been rebuilt to form a terminus on the Crossrail's overdue Elizabeth Line. After the Thameslink was extended from Luton directly to Abbey Wood last year, its easy to see how this, and the extra convenience of the Crossrail, will transform this quiet area quite a bit.

Abbey Wood will be connected right across the heart of, and clear beyond London in all directions to other parts of England. A single train from Abbey Wood to Heathrow airport alone, at the frequency of the Tube, is going to be a massive leap for this area of London.

This district takes its name almost literally from the vast woodland of the Lesnes Abbey Woods that once belonged to the monks of Lesnes Abbey.

If there is anywhere in south east London that truly embodies the term 'hidden gem', this would surely have to be it. It describes itself as a portal to the history of nature. The locals still have this attraction all to themselves since the Big Ben and London Eye tourists are completely oblivious to it.

If it was anywhere else, this site of religious historical ruin, just 30 minutes from London Bridge, would be a treated as a major tourist attraction. The layout today almost feels like a prettier, adventurous version of Stonehenge.

Henry II and his aides decided they wanted to weaken the church as it just began to carry too much rivalling wealth, power and influence over the country. He got into a beef with Thomas Beckett (The Archbishop of Canterbury) and they had some big disagreements. They went on and on about it until Henry got fed up one day and just had Beckett slaughtered.

This was a big mistake. Richard De Lucy, whose family came over from Normandy with William the Conqueror, was one of the aides stirring it up in Henry's ear because Beckett had placed Richard outside the Church's circle of trust... twice. They miscalculated how killing Thomas in his own Cathedral would have such a deeply disturbing effect on the entire country. Richard apparently punished himself from the guilt of his involvement in it by building this Abbey. An early version of community service maybe, albeit self-inflicted. He died in it just 3 months after it was finished. Clearly, Karma ruled that the Abbey wasn't enough.

As time went on, Lesnes morphed itself into very ordinary farmland until it was excavated in 1910 to form its current state; opened to the public as part of the local park.

The vast, surrounding woodland that is Lesnes Abbey Woods is larger than Greenwich park and can be navigated in full as part of the Green Chain Walk network. There's an area inside the woods actually called Abbey Wood which is designated as a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest where members of the public can go and dig up Tertiary fossils. These are things we can salvage from the planet that are between 2 and 65 million years old.

ABBEY ROAD LONDON - What's it like to cross the famous Beatles Zebra Crossing at Abbey Road Studios?

ABBEY ROAD LONDON - What's it like to cross the famous Beatles Zebra Crossing?
The Beatles made Abbey Road studios in London famous by taking a walk across the zebra crossing on the street outside for a photo and things have gone crazy since!

On August 8, 1969, on a street in north-west London and almost directly outside a celebrated recording studio Abbey Road Studios, one of the most famous ever album covers was shot. Photographer Iain MacMillan took the photograph that would adorn the cover of the brilliant new record named after the street where he stood, Abbey Road.

You can find the Abbey Road Beatles location in St John's Wood, in north west London. This pretty area is north west of Regent's Park and south of Hampstead, and includes plenty of cafes, restaurants and Lord's Cricket Ground. Although The Beatles are from Liverpool, there is no official Abbey Road Liverpool crossing.

Abbey Road is a thoroughfare in the borough of Camden and the City of Westminster in London running roughly northwest to southeast through St John's Wood near Lord's Cricket Ground. It is part of the road B507.

Abbey Road was created in 1829 from an existing farm track called Abbey Lane as part of the development of St John's Wood. Its name derived from the nearby presence of Kilburn Priory.

The Abbey Road studios and the Abbey Road Crossing are firmly linked with the band The Beatles. Tensions over management, finances and Yoko Ono's constant presence strained the band. Sensing the end could be near, The Beatles decided to go all out on a swan song album. They reunited with producer George Martin and began working in the summer of 1969 on what would become “Abbey Road.”

It was a fitting way to pay homage to the then-known EMI Studios which they had spent the majority of their careers—the famous Abbey Road Studios. The image was largely dictated by laziness on the band's part.

Although the Beatles Abbey Road crossing in London is a tourist attraction of sorts, it's also a busy road with local commuters.

The cover for The Beatles' album Abbey Road is an image that is instantly recognizable. Four people (usually), belonging to the same group, cross a road single file. If the author is really showing their work, they will be crossing to the right, in this sequence: dressed in a white suit, dressed in a black suit, dressed in a dark blue suit, and entirely in blue denim.

Whomever is third in line will be barefoot and walking off-step from the others (and, for extra points, will be holding a cigarette or pencil in their right hand). The one in front wearing white will have their hands stuffed in their pockets. For bonus points, there will be a 1960s Volkswagen Beetle and a man walking a dog in the background.

Discovering the best of the city of Bath in 2 days

Exploring Bath in 2 days - how much will we get to see this historic UNESCO recognised city?

Quite a lot, and we left wanting more. A warm, friendly city that felt safe.

From Bath Street into Abbey Churchyard, where explore the Roman Baths, Bath Abbey and the lanes and courtyards, culminating in a visit to Sally Lunns.

We jump across town, not even half a mile, and arrive at the centre of Georgian Bath, The Circle. Again a meander until we reach The Royal Cresent, home to the fascinating No1 Royal Crescent Museum. Our journey through the city takes us through Royal Victoria Park, Queen Square, past the Bath Theatre Royal, and onto Green Park Station via Kingsmead Square and past the Bath Brew House.

We then warp back to Bath Assembly Rooms, just off The Circus, and take a quick look inside before strolling from Alfred Street across town to Walcot Street. Rewind to Alfred Street and take an alternate route via Bartlett Street, George Street, Milsom Steet & Old Bond Street.

A jump to Queen Street and a stroll around some of Bath's narrower lanes leads us to The Corridor, The Guildhall and Guildhall Market Buildings, as well as a look at the Victoria Art Gallery.

From the Victoria Art Gallery, we head along the Grand Parage to overlook the Paradise Gardens on the banks of the River Avon and follow it around until we reach the Pulteney Bridge.

Passing over Pulteney Bridge, we head onto the Holburne Museum via Great Pulteney Street. After a look at Lady Danbury's home from Bridgerton (yep, Holburne Museum doubles as this Georgian home), we head onto the Kennet & Avon Canal, stroll back to meet the River Avon again and head back up to Pulteney Bridge.

We watch the sun drop, and as dusk descends upon us, we take a peek at Bath in the evening.

Thanks so much for watching, and we'd love to hear from you, so please leave a comment and don't forget to subscribe so you don't miss any of our travels: ????-
