ECOUEN MEDIEVAL MUSEUM -- ECOUEN, FRANCE (NEAR PARIS) 2010

Ecouen, France is just North of where I live in Paris-Saint-Denis, France. My idea: stay overnight in the Hotel Campanile near Ecouen, not far from Paris. Not very expensive, and pretty comfortable, as French hotels go. In the morning, either walk to the Château d'Ecouen, or ask the hotel to call you a taxi, but first, check out, and leave your bags there for later in the day. Spend the morning (they open at 10 am, I think) visiting this, arguably the best collection of medieval art, items and rooms in the world. The castle's history is fascinating, and there are even some nice gardens. The surrounding woods are lovely, but be careful! There are old gypsum mines there, and it's dangerous! Stay on the paths. (Gypsum is used to make plaster of Paris.)

This museum is free many days, and way, way cheaper than most museums in central Paris. All around Paris, right OUTSIDE the city, you may see more interesting, less-crowded sights, and they're certainly cheaper! This museum has the best boutique ever -- their Spring, 2010 selection was wonderful! Gifts galore, at fabulous prices. For as little as two euros fifty eurocents, you'll find wonderful treasures to carry away and share or cherish.

This place is so big, and budgets are tight so they cannot open it all, every day. So you have to keep going back! I must have been there twenty times already! I get frustrated when I cannot see the great things I saw before, but such are the limits of the French culture ministry. Alas.

The first Sunday of each month, lots of stuff in France is FREE! They call it heritage days, and these started nearly ten years ago, and are a GREAT way for EVERYONE to be able to enjoy the wonders of France -- for free!

Ecouen CAN be reached via public transportation from Paris, but it's a bit tricky.

After you've spent the morning feasting your eyes, feast your palate in their gorgeous restaurant. What a setting!

After lunch, if the weather is nice, spread that bedsheet you packed in your bag for the day, and take your siesta out on one of the lawns. There you'll be, perched high on hills, with a marvelous countryside all around you. Feel like a prince, or a princess, even if for only an hour or so!

Then, go back in and see more of this museum! The gardens are not famous, but they are ample and wondrous to stroll. The architecture of the castle is fascinating. Of course, there are tours. But I just wander. And wander. And wander . . .

Later on in the afternoon, when your eyeballs are stuffed, as I like to say, go back to the Hotel Campanile, pick up your bags, and then go into Paris, or move on on your wonderful tour of Ile-de-France, the Greater Paris region.

Don't be a sap! Central Paris is for squares. Even if you've GOT the do-re-mi, why throw it away in those same old boring haunts everyone else has seen? Why not stay in Senlis? Saint-Denis? Houdan? Verneuil-sur-Avre? AND SO ON!

All around Paris are marvelous castles and abbeys. I've lived here 16 years, and haven't even scratched the surface!

THE CHATEAU DE CHANTILLY IS A HISTORIC CHATEAU LOCATED IN THE TOWN OF CHANTILLY FRANCE.

The Château de Chantilly is a historic château located in the town of Chantilly, France. It comprises two attached buildings; the Grand Château, destroyed during the French Revolution and rebuilt in the 1870s, and the Petit Château which was built around 1560 for Anne de Montmorency. Owned by the Institut de France, the château houses the Musée Condé, which is one of the finest art galleries in France and is open to the public.
The estate's connection with the Montmorency family began in 1484. The first mansion (no longer extant, now replaced by the Grand Château) was built in 1528--1531 for the Constable Anne de Montmorency by Pierre Chambiges. The Petit Château was also built for him, around 1560, probably by Jean Bullant. In 1632, after the death of Henri II, it passed to the Grand Condé who inherited it through his mother, a Montmorency.
Several interesting pieces of history are associated with the château during the 17th century. Molière's play, Les Précieuses ridicules, received its first performance here in 1659. Madame de Sévigné relates in her memoirs that when Louis XIV visited in 1671, François Vatel, the maître d'hôtel to the Grand Condé, committed suicide when he feared the fish would be served late.
The original mansion was destroyed in the French Revolution. It was repaired in a modest way by the last Condé, but the entire property was confiscated from the Orléans family between the years 1853 and 1872, during which interval it was owned by Coutts, an English bank. Chantilly was entirely rebuilt in 1875--1881 by Henri d'Orléans, duc d'Aumale (1822--1897) to the designs of Honore Daumet. The new château met with mixed reviews. Boni de Castellane summed up one line of thought: What is today styled a marvel is one of the saddest specimens of the architecture of our era — one enters at the second floor and descends to the salons. In the end, the Duc d'Aumale bequeathed the property to the Institut de France upon his death in 1897.

Avignon is a city in south-eastern France with 90,000 inhabitants.
About 12,000 live in the ancient town center enclosed by its medieval ramparts.
From 1309 to 1376 seven successive popes resided in Avignon rather than in Rome.

SEE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE IN PARIS! | Mini Travel Guide | Non-stop Flight from Halifax to France

Our gear and other products we use •

2024 Calendar -

Come explore the beautiful city of Paris with us. :)
DAY ONE:
First, we jumped on a WestJet plane at the Halifax Stanfield International Airport where in a matter of 6 hours we arrived in France! (Gosh we love non-stop flights) Head to or to learn about more direct flights from Halifax to Europe (Paris, Glasgow, Dublin, and London).

After taking the metro from the airport and checking into Novotel Paris Centre, we admired the view from our room before hitting the sights of this famous city of lights & love! Let’s be honest.. we ran to the Eiffel Tower first. Snacked on a baguette, and walked to the Arc De Triomphe. Sun setting over the city skyline, we climbed more stairs to the top of this incredible monument just in time to see the Eiffel Tower sparkle!

DAY TWO:
This was our only full day right in the city so we made the most of it by walking to as many places as we could!
Favourite spots included:
- The Louvre Museum where we awed at the art and took a selfie with Mona Lisa
- Sacré Coeur Basilica, both beautiful in architecture and the perfect spot to experience a view over the city.
- Wandering the dreamy artist-filled streets of Montmartre.
- A cute cafe date under the flowers at Le Vrai Paris (plus a few bakeries stops for croissants and baguettes)

DAY THREE:
Taking a quick metro ride out of the city of Paris, we found ourselves stepping back in time at the jaw-dropping Palace of Versailles! Once the royal residence of kings and queens like Louis XIV and Marie-Antoinette, it is truly something you have to visit someday.

DAY FOUR:
We visited a beautiful region just outside of Paris called Grand Roissy.
First, we checked into our home for the remainder of our trip - Nomad Hotel (this cute eco friendly hotel is right beside the Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport). Next, we hopped on a bus to experience the Visit Grand Roissy cultural tour to the town of Écouen. This stopover tour being offered right now is only 5 euros and covers your bus ticket and admission to the National Renaissance Museum of France. Built in the 1500s, Chateau Écouen is a Renaissance castle and the former property of a great Renaissance lord, Anne de Montmorency. It’s the largest renaissance museum in France, containing important collections of paintings, sculptures, ceramics, stained glass, furniture, textiles, and other arts from the 15th-17th centuries. Then, we ate lunch at the lovely Il Maestro Restaurant where the food was so good and the owners were beyond friendly.
Back at the hotel we explored the town and had dinner at the hotel too!

DAY FIVE:
We explored the beautiful medieval town of Luzarches and had lunch at La Lutetia followed by dinner at Before Paris.

DAY SIX:
We took a non-stop WestJet flight from Paris home to Halifax!

Thanks for watching, we would really love it if you subscribed to our channel!! :)

I stayed at the Relais Spa Hotel, Chessy Paris on one of my trips to France. This hotel is located at a convenient 10 minute drive from the Charles de Gaulle airport, and offers free WiFi across all rooms. The rooms are spacious and clean.

The room I stayed in looked like a studio apartment with a kitchenette and a microwave. Also, I've got to admit, the bed was the most comfortable bed I've ever slept on. The view from the room was great with aircrafts flying over you every now and then. The rooms, thankfully were noise proof and I slept like a baby.

From its website:
Business travelers will appreciate its proximity to Roissy-CDG airport, as well as to the Villepinte and Le Bourget convention centers.
