Athens shock: DANGEROUS districts walk, is it so bad?

Athens shock me, honestly. It's one of my favourite cities in the world, but there are things that tourists don't see here.

Greece travel was not what I expected, and it truly changed my views.
It’s dangerous Athens neighbourhoods, refugee crisis, illegal migrants and drug usage on the most central streets of the city.

Meters away from the hipster Monastiraki district streets where families of tourists walk in awe after enjoying a tasty meal in a friendly place on their way to Acropolis.

What's wrong with Athens? Is Greece dangerous? Will it become better?

I had to find answers and went to the most dangerous Athens district to find out.

I film documentaries about the world's most forgotten places and cultural differences:

ATHENS #athens
The Athens Metropolitan Area consists of 58 densely populated municipalities, sprawling around the Municipality of Athens (the City Centre) in virtually all directions. For the Athenians, all the urban municipalities surrounding the City Centre are called suburbs. According to their geographic location in relation to the City of Athens, the suburbs are divided into four zones; the northern suburbs (including Agios Stefanos, Dionysos, Ekali, Nea Erythraia, Kifissia, Kryoneri, Maroussi, Pefki, Lykovrysi, Metamorfosi, Nea Ionia, Nea Filadelfeia, Irakleio, Vrilissia, Melissia, Penteli, Chalandri, Agia Paraskevi, Gerakas, Pallini, Galatsi, Psychiko and Filothei); the southern suburbs (including Alimos, Nea Smyrni, Moschato, Tavros, Agios Ioannis Rentis, Kallithea, Piraeus, Agios Dimitrios, Palaio Faliro, Elliniko, Glyfada, Lagonisi, Saronida, Argyroupoli, Ilioupoli, Varkiza, Voula, Vari and Vouliagmeni); the eastern suburbs (including Zografou, Dafni, Vyronas, Kaisariani, Cholargos and Papagou); and the western suburbs (including Peristeri, Ilion, Egaleo, Koridallos, Agia Varvara, Keratsini, Perama, Nikaia, Drapetsona, Chaidari, Petroupoli, Agioi Anargyroi, Ano Liosia, Aspropyrgos, Eleusina, Acharnes and Kamatero).

The Athens city coastline, extending from the major commercial port of Piraeus to the southernmost suburb of Varkiza for some 25 km (20 mi), is also connected to the City Centre by tram.

Many of the southern suburbs (such as Alimos, Palaio Faliro, Elliniko, Glyfada, Voula, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza) known as the Athens Riviera, host a number of sandy beaches, most of which are operated by the Greek National Tourism Organisation and require an entrance fee. Casinos operate on both Mount Parnitha, some 25 km (16 mi) from downtown Athens (accessible by car or cable car), and the nearby town of Loutraki (accessible by car via the Athens – Corinth National Highway, or the suburban rail service Proastiakos)

18. Ancient Corinth + a Trip to Athens for Parts

This week we visit the archeological site of the ancient city of Corinth (8th c. B.C.), once one of the three major power centers of Greece. After a frustrating search for some needed boat parts we head to Athens during lockdown to pick them up. Since lockdown started in December, locating and purchasing parts is sometimes a logistical nightmare.

We are still on the hard during the Greek COVID lockdown, WITH an end in sight! We have officially missed the weather window for an Atlantic crossing in 2020, so we’re trying to stay in the Med-area until November 2021 when the weather window returns. We are weeks from departing Greece and heading to Croatia after almost 7 months in lockdown. We hope you enjoy the video!

The archaeological site of the Kerameikos, between Ermou, Peireos, and Asomaton Streets, is a small part of the ancient Attic Deme of Kerameon, one of the largest demes of ancient Athens, located on the northwest edge of the city. As suggested by its name, the Kerameikos (from the Greek word for pottery) was a settlement of potters and vase painters, and the main production centre of the famous Attic vases. Those parts of the Kerameikos that were located near the riverbank suffered continuously from the overflowing river, and so the area was converted into a burial ground, which gradually developed into the most important cemetery of ancient Athens.

Potters were drawn to the Kerameikos by the clay deposits of the Iridanos, the small river that runs through the Kerameikos archaeological site. The river lay buried for centuries under eight or nine meters of landfill (level of Ermou Street), but was uncovered again in the 1960's during the archaeological excavations.

The earliest tombs at the Kerameikos date from the Early Bronze Age (2700-2000 BC), and the cemetery appears to have continuously expanded from the sub-Mycenaean period (1100-1000 BC). In the Geometric (1000-700 BC) and Archaic periods (700-480 BC) the number of tombs increased; they were arranged inside tumuli or marked by funerary monuments. The cemetery was used incessantly from the Hellenistic period until the Early Christian period (338 BC until approximately the sixth century AD).

The most important Athenian vases come from the tombs of the Kerameikos. Among them is the famous “Dipylon Oinochoe”, which bears the earliest inscription written in the Greek alphabet (second half of the eighth century BC). The Kerameikos excavations began in 1870 under St. Koumanoudis of the Archaeological Society of Athens. They continued in collaboration with the German archaeologists A. Brueckner and F. Noack over the next few decades, and are carried out by the German Archaeological Institute since 1913.

The site is regularly cleared of undergrowth. A set of projects, such as the construction of a network of visitor paths, the restoration of buildings, the re-opening of the Kerameikos Museum, the placement of informative signposts, and the construction of an amphitheatre, were completed in 2004. Moreover, recent expropriations of neighbouring land plots are expected to expand the site and allow further excavations to take place in the future. The site's small museum houses the finds from the Kerameikos excavations.

Athens Metro - Doukissis Plakentias Station | Greece | 21/11/23

Doukissis Plakentias (Greek: Δουκίσσης Πλακεντίας), sometimes known simply as Plakentias, is an Athens Metro and Suburban Railway station situated at the end of Doukissis Plakentias Avenue in Chalandri, a municipality in the regional unit of North Athens, Attica, Greece. It is named after the Duchess of Plaisance, a philhellene who owned much of the land in the part of Attica where the station now stands. The metro station lies underground, while the Suburban Railway station lies within the median strip of the Attiki Odos motorway.

The station is located within the administrative boundaries of the municipality of Chalandri near the settlement of Patima. The Transport for Athens-operated bus station allows access to the northeast suburbs of Athens, northern Mesogeia and East Attica. It is also the junction of Motorway 6 and the Hymettus ring road. In addition, it is used by the municipal transport services of Chalandri and Vrilissia. Private car parking, taxi and local bus services are also available.

History
The metro station was opened on 28 July 2004, while the Suburban Railway station was opened two days later, along with the first section of the Athens Airport–Patras railway.

In the original plans the construction of Metro Line 3 and during most of the construction, Doukissis Plakentias station was called Stavros, while the station now known as Chalandri station was called Doukissis Plakentias. The stations were renamed to their current names during the construction of the Ethniki Amyna - Doukissis Plakentias route. Since Chalandri station is nearest the centre of Chalandri and Doukissis Plakentias is located on the border of three municipalities en route to the tower in Penteli, the names were changed.

Service
The station serves the residents of Chalandri, Agia Paraskevi, Gerakas, Vrilissia, Penteli and Melissia neighborhoods, allowing access to the center of Athens, East Attica and the Athens International Airport.

Suburban Railway station
Doukissis Plakentias Station of the Athens Suburban Railway is on the Kiato/Ano Liosia - Airport route. It was inaugurated on July 30, 2004, just before the start of the Olympic Games in Athens. The railway station is at the end of Doukissis Plakentias Avenue and the start of Iraklitou Avenue in Halandri. It serves three municipalities and has central dock and spotting line trains.

Since 15 May 2022, the following weekday services call at this station:

Athens Suburban Railway Line A1 between Piraeus and Athens Airport, with up to one train per hour;
Athens Suburban Railway Line A2 between Ano Liosia and Athens Airport, with up to one train per hour: during the peak hours, there is one extra train per hour that terminates at Paiania–Kantza instead of the Airport.

Metro Station
Doukissis Plakentias station of the Athens Metro is on Line 3. It opened on 28 July 2004. It is underground and has two side platforms, and a depot.

The station has four entrances. The Doukissis Plakentias to Athens route is accessible from Plakentias-Iraklitou Avenue, providing access toward the center of Chalandri and Athens. A high surface node is located on the northwest side of the station, on the border with Vrilissia and close to municipal transport. At the cathode is a crossing for local buses (412, 423, 447, 403) to meet the OASA stop at Chalandri. The Doukissis Plakentias to Vrilissia route (originally printed misspelt as Doukissis Plakentias to Vrilissia) is at the rise of Doukissis Plakentias - Iraklitou Avenue to Chalandri-Gerakas in the northeast. From this strip, travellers can board local buses (447, 403, 412, 423) that go to Patima, Penteli or west to Vrilissia.

The Garyttou entrance is located in the southwestern lower surface, near Agia Paraskevi (Garyttou street district Kontopefko). Here, local bus 406 provides access to the square of Mesogeion Avenue. The fourth entrance is indicated by the Bus-Parking-Taxi sign to the southeast that leads to the OASA bus station. with numerous buses to neighbouring suburbs and East Attica. Buses 306 and 307 go to Gerakas and Glyka Nera. Bus 407 goes to Mesogeion Avenue, and other buses serve Pallini, Spata, and Artemida. There are also bus stops on Panagouli Avenue (next to Attiki Odos), with bus service to Vrilissia and Melissia. Taxi service is available. The parking lot for Metro private passengers is also accessible from this entrance.

The station is the terminal point for most trains on Line 3 of the Athens Metro, while some continue their journey to the Athens International Airport, using the Suburban Railway line. The transition between these trains of the two networks is achieved through a dual-tunnel connecting line immediately after the station. Between the tunnel exit and switches to and from Suburban Rail lines, trains transition from the 750 V DC third rail electrification system of the Athens Metro to the AC 25 kV 50 Hz overhead electrification used by OSE.

walking tour in Chania , Crete , GREECE #2021

#Chania #Crete #inspiration
Chania is the site of the Minoan settlement the Greeks called Kydonia, the source of the word quince. It appears on Linear B as ku-do-ni-ja.
Some notable archaeological evidence for the existence of this Minoan city below some parts of today's Chania was found by excavations in the district of Kasteli in the Old Town. This area appears to have been inhabited since the Neolithic era. The city reemerged after the end of the Minoan period as an important city-state in Classical Greece, one whose domain extended from Chania Bay to the feet of the White Mountains. The first major wave of settlers from mainland Greece was by the Dorian Greeks who came around 1100 BC. Kydonia was constantly at war with other Cretan city-states such as Aptera, Phalasarna and Polyrrinia and was important enough for the Kydonians to be mentioned in Homer's Odyssey (xix.200). In 69 BC, the Roman consul Caecilius Metellus defeated the Cretans and conquered Kydonia to which he granted the privileges of an independent city-state. Kydonia reserved the right to mint its own coins until the 3rd century AD.
The early Christian period under Byzantine rule (First Byzantine Period, 395–824 AD) and the rule of the Arabs, who called the settlement Al Hanim (the Inn), are not well documented. Under the Arabs, the Christian population was persecuted and moved to the mountains. The Byzantine Empire retook the city in 961 AD (Second Byzantine Period, until 1204 AD). In this period the Arabic name of the city was changed into Greek Chania. Byzantines began to strongly fortify the city in order to prevent another Arab invasion, using materials from the ancient buildings of the area. By this time Chania was the seat of a bishopric, which would be known under Venetian rule as Roman Catholic Diocese of La Canea and later become the Latin titular see of Cydonia

Athens Airport Station ( Rail & Metro ) | Greece | 21/11/23

Athens Airport (Greek: Αεροδρόμιο, Aerodromio), also known as Athens International Airport (Greek: Διεθνής Αερολιμένας Αθηνών, Diethnis Aerolimenas Athinon) on signage, is a railway station and metro station that serves the international airport of Athens, Greece. It operates on both the Athens Suburban Railway as well as Line 3 of the Athens Metro. It is the first and only train station in Greece that is not managed by Gaiose. It is owned by the airport, which charges the train operating companies (Hellenic Train and STASY) fees to use it.

History
The station opened on 30 July 2004, two weeks before the Athens Olympics. Although it was projected that only commuter rail would use the station, the Athens Metro operating company decided to extend Line 3 to the airport. However, building new tracks was not economically viable, so the route would be served by dual-voltage second-generation trains and would share tracks with Suburban Railway trains between Doukissis Plakentias station and the airport. Because of the limited availability of these trains (7 in total), only 1 or 2 per hour reach the station, leaving the airport every 36 minutes from 06:10 to 23:34.

The decision to extend Line 3 to the airport forced a change to the station design; Metro trains have a higher floor than Suburban Railway trains, so the central track had to be lowered. This is why initial services to the airport did not use any stations between Doukissis Plakentias and the airport. The intermediate stations did not have the tracks lowered; parts of the platforms were raised in 2006. Since then, all intermediate stations have been used by both services.

Platforms
Athens Airport Station has two island platforms and three tracks. Track 1 is not used due to low traffic, Track 2 is used by the Metro, and Track 3 is used by the Suburban Railway. All trains terminate at this station.

Access
The railway station is immediately adjacent to the airport terminal, accessible by an elevated walkway. Because of the additional cost of using the station, there is a surcharge for passengers entering or exiting the airport. As of 2023, the base fare to the airport is €9, with varying prices for round trips or groups.

Services
Since 27 September 2022, the following weekday services call at this station:

Athens Suburban Railway Line A1 to Piraeus, with up to one train per hour;
Athens Suburban Railway Line A2 to Ano Liosia, with up to one train per hour: during the peak hours, there is one extra train per hour that terminates at Paiania–Kantza instead of the Airport;
Athens Metro Line 3 towards Dimotiko Theatro, with up to one train every 36 minutes.

Future developments
As the airport's passenger numbers are rising, services may get denser and Track 1 could be used again. Moreover, for many years there have been plans to extend Suburban Railway services to Rafina, a suburb of Athens and the third largest harbour of the city as well. Although original plans show the line branching off the main one after Pallini or Doukissis Plakentias Station, then running in a reserved-for-this-purpose median of the A64 Mount Hymmetus Ring Road and then extending to Rafina, recent plans have called for an extension of the line from the Airport. Such an extension would be shorter and less expensive to build, however, it has been unpopular due to the fact that the travelling time from and to Rafina will be longer and certain areas will not be served.

Athens Suburban Railway Line A1 to Piraeus, with up to one train per hour;
Athens Suburban Railway Line A2 to Ano Liosia, with up to one train per hour: during the peak hours, there is one extra train per hour that terminates at Paiania–Kantza instead of the Airport;
