The Loire Valley, is located in the middle stretch of the Loire River in central France, in both the administrative regions Pays de la Loire and Centre-Val de Loire.
The area of the Loire Valley comprises about 800 square kilometres.
It is referred to as the Cradle of the French and the Garden of France due to the abundance of vineyards, fruit orchards (such as cherries), and artichoke, and asparagus fields, which line the banks of the river.
Notable for its historic towns, architecture, and wines, the valley has been inhabited since the Middle Palaeolithic period.
The climate is favorable most of the year, the river often acting as a line of demarcation in France's weather between the northern climate and the southern.
The river has a significant effect on the mesoclimate of the region, adding a few degrees of temperature.
The climate can be cool with springtime frost while wine harvest months may have rain.
Summers are hot; however, influences from the Atlantic moderate the temperature with breezes.
The Loire Valley wine region is one of the world's most well-known areas of wine production and includes several French wine regions situated along the river from the Muscadet region on the Atlantic coast to the regions of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé just southeast of the city of Orléans in north central France.
Loire wines tend to exhibit a characteristic fruitiness with fresh, crisp flavors.
The châteaux, numbering more than three hundred, represent a nation of builders starting with the necessary castle fortifications in the 10th century to the splendour of those built half a millennium later.
When the French kings began constructing their huge châteaux here, the nobility, not wanting or even daring to be far from the seat of power, followed suit.
Their presence in the lush, fertile valley began attracting the very best landscape designers.
In addition to its many châteaux, the cultural monuments illustrate to an exceptional degree the ideals of the Renaissance and the Age of the Enlightenment on western European thought and design.
Many of the châteaux were designed to be built on the top of hills, one example of this is the Château d'Amboise.
The only château to have been built in the riverbed is the Château de Montsoreau.
Many of the châteaux had extremely detailed and expensive churches on the grounds, or within the actual château itself.
On December 2, 2000, UNESCO added the central part of the river valley, between Chalonnes-sur-Loire and Sully-sur-Loire, to its list of World Heritage Sites.

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Loire Valley, centred on the Loire River in central western France, is one of the most beautiful and French areas of the entire country. With gorgeous chateaus, endless vineyards, cute little towns and of course the meandering river, it's a great place to visit and explore. The World Heritage list entry covers several different chateaus, but we decided to focus on two of the most famous: Castel Chambord and Chateau Chenonceau.

The medieval castle of Sully sur Loire, Loire Valley Chateau, France
The castle of Sully sur Loire is one of the lesser known chateaux in the Loire Valley of France. But the reason why we liked it was because it was the most medieval castle we visited. It still has a fortress look with big towers, machicolation and a moat.
A medieval fortress in the Loire Valley or a medieval castle in the Loire Valley is not very common because most castles in the Loire Valley are Renaissance castles. Although the castle of Sully sur Loire does have a Renaissance wing, it is mostly a French medieval castle.
This video on the castle of Sully sur Loire is one of eight videos in our series about the castles of the Loire Valley. If you want to see the videos of the other chateaux of the Loire valley, we have a playlist dedicated to the chateaux of the Loire Valley of France.
Château de Sully-sur-Loire • A Moated Fortress in the Loire Valley France
Château de Sully-sur-Loire - A Moated Fortress in the Loire Valley France. During our cruise we visit Château de Sully-sur-Loire, a moated fortress and 'monument historique'. The Château de Sully-sur-Loire is a castle, converted to a palatial seigneurial residence, situated in the commune of Sully-sur-Loire, Loiret, France.
The castle originally belonged to Georges de la Trémoïlle, who infuriated Joan of Arc by encouraging the Dauphin to devote himself to idle hunting in the forests around Sully. After Joan's failure to liberate Paris in 1430, de la Trémoïlle imprisoned her in the castle. In the 18th century, Voltaire, exiled from Paris, also spent time at the château.
The château of Sully-sur-Loire is a superb example of a medieval fortress with its high towers and moats. The moats are still full of water diverted from the Sange River. It was built at the end of the 14th century on a site which has dominated one of the few crossing points of the River Loire. The keep, dating from 1400, has one of the finest chestnut roofs anywhere along the Loire. The carpentry of the garrets is a work of art by master carpenters of the Orléans region.
The most famous of the château's proprietors was the first Duke of Sully (1559-1641), who was the Grand Minister to King Henri IV. The castle remained in the Sully family for four centuries. The young Louis XIV and his mother Anne of Austria took refuge here in 1652 as they fled the insurrection. Voltaire was exiled here in 1719 for his immoderate taste for satire. Today, exhibitions and theme entertainment are held here each year, as well as a music festival.

Orleans is a city located in central France. It has been a major town since the time of Gallia, was destroyed and rebuilt by ancient Rome, and became the capital of the Orleans kingdom in the early 6th century of the Middle Ages. Orleans, the closest to Paris in the Loire Valley (about 130km southwest of Paris), was a strategically important location. Widely known by the Siege of Orleans (1428-1429) and Joan of Arc, the Maiden of Orleans who saved the French crisis at that time during the Hundred Years War between England and France.

Orléans, France
Orléans is located on the Loire River where the river curves south towards the Massif Central. Orléans belongs to the vallée de la Loire sector between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes-sur-Loire, which was in 2000 inscribed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The city of New Orleans (in French, La Nouvelle-Orléans), in the United States is named after the commune of Orléans.
A short visit to Orléans (France) on the Loire Valley
A day outing to Orléans, about 50 miles south-west of Paris, the gate to the Châteaux de la Loire (Loire Castles). Joan of Arc is celebrated there because she helped liberate the city from the English rule during the 100 years war (1429). Built in the 13th century, the Cathedral houses a memorial to the American soldiers who lost their lives on French soil.

Fontevraud l'Abbaye
The Royal Abbey of Our Lady of Fontevraud or Fontevrault (in French: abbaye de Fontevraud) was a monastery in the village of Fontevraud-l'Abbaye, near Chinon, in the former French duchy of Anjou. It was founded in 1101 by the itinerant preacher Robert of Arbrissel. The foundation flourished and became the center of a new monastic Order, the Order of Fontevrault. This order was composed of double monasteries, in which the community consisted of both men and women—in separate quarters of the abbey—all of which were subject to the authority of the Abbess of Fontevraud. The Abbey of Fontevraud itself consisted of four separate communities, all completely managed by the same abbess.
The first permanent structures were built between 1110 and 1119. The area where the Abbey is located was then part of what is sometimes referred to as the Angevin Empire. The King of England, Henry II, his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, and son, King Richard the Lionheart were all buried here at the end of the 12th century. It was disestablished as a monastery during the French Revolution.
The Abbey is situated in the Loire Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, between Chalonnes-sur-Loire and Sully-sur-Loire within the Loire-Anjou-Touraine French regional natural park (Parc naturel régional Loire-Anjou-Touraine).
The complex of monastic buildings served as a prison from 1804 to 1963. Since 1975, it has hosted a cultural centre, the Centre Culturel de l'Ouest.

CHAMBORD
RO.
The royal Château de Chambord at Chambord, Loir-et-Cher, France, is one of the most recognizable châteaux in the world because of its very distinct French Renaissance architecture which blends traditional French medieval forms with classical Renaissance structures.[nb 1] The building, which was never completed, was constructed by King François I.
Chambord is the largest château in the Loire Valley ; it was built to serve as a hunting lodge for François I, who maintained his royal residences at Château de Blois and Château d'Amboise. The original design of the Château de Chambord is attributed, though with several doubts, to Domenico da Cortona. Some authors claim that the French Renaissance architect Philibert Delorme had a considerable role in the château's design,[2] and others have suggested that Leonardo da Vinci may have designed it.
Chambord was altered considerably during the twenty-eight years of its construction (1519--1547) during which it was overseen on-site by Pierre Nepveu. With the château nearing completion, François showed off his enormous symbol of wealth and power by hosting his old archnemesis, Emperor Charles V at Chambord.
In 1792, some of the furnishings were sold and timber removed. For a time the building was left abandoned, though in the 19th century some attempts were made at restoration. During the Second World War art works from the collections of the Louvre and Compiègne were moved to Château de Chambord. Now open to the public, in 2007 the château received 700,000 visitors
DE.
