The TRUTH about the 3 Day Tour from MARRAKECH to the SAHARA DESERT (Merzouga) - IS IT WORTH IT?
Are you thinking of taking the 3 day tour from Marrakech to Merzouga and the Erg Chebbi sand dunes in the Sahara Desert? If so, you've found the right video!
In this video I'll take you along and show you in detail what the tour is like. I'll show the truth, the good and the bad. The driving, the sights along the way, the food, the accommodation, the timings, the costs. Everything.
It’s a popular tour for anyone visiting Morocco, and it’s the real thing right to the edge of the Sahara proper, rather than the one day tours. Before I went I couldn’t find that much information online prior to going. There was no real detail about exactly what you see, where you stay and what you eat. Also, what you get for paying a little extra for the luxury option.
This is the video I wish I had been able to watch before going.
We’ll go from Marrakech and up into the Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n'Tichka Pass - The highest pass through the mountains. From there we come out the other side of the mountains and visit and amazing ancient town of Ait Ben Hadou, where many movies have been filmed. We’ll stop at the Rose valley and the Dadès Gorges before going to the hotel for the night.
On day 2, we’ll visit Tinghir and the Todgha Gorge before getting to Merzouga and riding a camel into the Erg Chebbi dunes to the camp for the night.
The final day is the long journey back to Marrakech. On this day I’ll give you my full summary of the tour - the good, the bad, advice and tips.
Here's a full breakdown of what the tour involved, allowing you to go straight to any part you're interested in. Be sure to watch to the end so that you can hear my summary and useful tips!
This was filmed on 24, 25, 26 May.

MERZOUGA, MOROCCO (2023) | Magical Merzouga Desert Trip Overview + Honest Review
Merzouga is a small town located in the Sahara Desert in the south of Morocco. It’s known as the gateway to the Erg Chebbi sand dunes at the edge of town, consisting of soaring peaks of sand that change color with the shifting light of dawn and dusk. The most authentic way to experience the desert is on camelback, including an overnight stay at a desert camp. Many companies offer such trips, but they vary greatly in cost, comfort, and experience. In this video, we will show you our 3-day safari experience so you know what to expect from a camel trek. We will also give an honest review and different desert activity options at the end of the video.

Follow us on our Grand Moroccan Roadtrip!

Driving more than 10,000 km in eight weeks, our roadtrip included many unforgettable adventures. Watch as we explore remote landscapes, climb high peaks, battle breath-taking dust-topias (double pun, yeah!), and navigate the hectic bustle of Morocco’s major cities.

Real Talk:
Despite our attempt at keeping our Morocco Travel Documentary as authentic as possible, you are still watching a highlight reel. When editing, we naturally tend to choose the most exciting videos. What you don’t see are the hours spent driving through less spectacular landscapes or some of the unpleasant challenges we faced.
Did we like everything about Morocco?
Far from it. As mentioned in the video, the huge amount of trash definitely dampened our experience. Additionally, we were surprised by the sheer number of begging children. During our trip, we counted a minimum of 500 children asking us for money or sweets. While Morocco undoubtedly has to combat poverty, this behavior often seemed less dictated by need and more by opportunity. Stopping and giving is an individual choice, of course, but when we didn’t we were regularly flipped off, kicked after, or hurled insults at.
In general, though, we perceived most Moroccans as extremely friendly and helpful. The best example is the three local men who selflessly helped us to change our ruptured tire. We cannot thank them enough.
Full Disclosure:
This trip was entirely self-funded. However, we did enjoy a two-night complimentary stay at La Sultana Oualidia and a two-night complimentary stay at La Sultana Marrakech.

44:24 Verabschiedung

Morocco is one of the most amazing places that you can visit. It’s one of the few places that I’ve been to that made me feel like I left my reality completely. This country is so amazing because its a deep mix of many cultures Arab,Afro and Euro. The food is incredible, the landscapes are incredible the architecture is incredible. Here are a few tips on how to make sure you make the most of your tripFirst I want to say that I went to Morocco over 5 years ago and my shooting skills with a cinema camera were complete trash so I have limited footage.
* Don’t make it a quick trip. The first thing that you should know about Morocco is that the country is huge and all the cities that are worthwhile visiting are very far apart so you’ll definitely need to dedicate 7-9 days at a minimum. I wouldn’t go for less time than that to visit multiple cities because you simply wont have enough time and honestly you really shouldn’t rush through Morocco.
* Hire a driver. Next I strongly recommend hiring a driver to take you around. A driver will allow you to take it easy and rest in between cities. Also it’s wise to get a driver because there are police constantly stopping cars and your driver is obviously better suited for dealing with local police. I recommend Mbark, who was my driver, he uses SUVs to drive around thats definitely necessary to get around some of the places we went to. I’ll have the link to his website in the description
* Stay in a riad. Book stays in a riad instead of a traditional hotel as much as you can. You should really immerse yourself inside Morocco and its culture and this is a great way to start your dayRiads are traditional Moroccan homes that feature beautiful open air courtyards in the center. They’re usually decorated with beautiful mosaic and are hundreds of years old. These buildings are usually located inside the dense cities so there are almost no windows for viewing out. Instead they have the windows facing towards the courtyard in the center. These places are too unique to pass out on and the best part is that they are really really cheap to stay
* Glamp in the desert. Sleeping in the desert was one of the most amazing things I did in Morocco. We stayed in Marzuga which was in the northern Sahara desert and we had a n amazing time. The amount of stars you see is incredible. We watched the moon rise from the top of a sand dune which was so pretty. I thought it was incredible because the moon was so bright that you could easily read from a book outside wow. Also these tents aren’t your average camping tent. I said we were clamping. The tents have a full bed, sofa, shower and bathroom inside. The food they served was amazing and at night they usually have a fire pit going. Man… thinking back on it I wish I would’ve stayed one more night. There was something really special about that place.
* Be aware. People in Morocco are awesome but you still need to be careful with things that you do. For example when I went to Fez we got into a bunch of shady situations. Basically don’t make too much eye contact with people because otherwise they’ll try to either “help you with directions” like walk you to a restaurant or gift shop where they will expect a tip and if you refuse they’re probably get rude with you. The problem is that Morocco has a huge unemployment rate so people are trying to do what they can to get some money. While helping out the local economy is good by eating at small restaurants and visiting small shops it can get dangerous and shady if you notice that people are constantly coming up to you and harassing you asking you to help you. Another place where you need to watch out for this is in Jamal Al Efna. This place is awesome but you need to be careful when taking photos. Often times I’d take a wide shot of a scene and someone who just so happens to be in the photo came up to me asking for money because they were in my shot… crazy. Just say no and walk away. Regardless make sure that when you’re taking photos no person is your focus.

MOROCCO | A 9 Day Group Tour | Documentary Trailer
I recently got to travel around Morocco on a 9 day group tour.
This was my first time in the country and is documented in a new 2 part travel documentary series.
Highlights included:
- exploring the medina in Marrakech
- driving through the High Atlas Mountains
- visiting the Gladiator and Game of Thrones location in Ait Benhaddou
- spending a night in the Sahara desert including a camel ride and camping under the stars
- buying freshly caught fish in Essaouira
- hot air balloon over Marrakech
The difference with this tour is it's the first one I've hosted and organised myself. Working with Intrepid Travel we created a bespoke itinerary and put it on sale to my followers.

MOROCCO Trailer : 9 day tour hosted by KARL WATSON
This is the trailer for a 2 part series adventuring around Morocco. This is a 9 day group tour around the south or Morocco hosted by my friend and fellow YouTuber Karl Watson. We start in Marrakesh, then driving through the High Atlas Mountains, visiting the Gladiator and Game of Thrones location in Ait Benhaddou. Then transfer from our bus into 4x4s to drive out to spend a night in the Sahara desert! We ride camels over the sand dunes before dancing around the camp fire with traditional Moroccan music and then sleep under the stars. Finally we head out to the Atlantic coastal city Essaouira, get lost in the Medinas, watch a world record attempt and eat fresh fish from the markets. Finally we complete the loop in Marrakech where we go a hot air balloon ride.
