Top 10 Places to Visit in China - Travel Documentary

China is one of the most fascinating travel destinations in the world, and in this video I will share with you my personal top 10 best places to visit.

From the ruins of the Great Wall to vibrant megacities. From surreal mountain landscapes to charming riverside villages. Today’s China is a beautiful, complicated, and captivating place.

I spent more than 18 months in China, spread over the course of a decade and a half. In the last years, I started filming the places that I traveled to, using regular cameras and drones. All footage in this travel documentary is shot by myself between 2010 and 2019.

Here's a brief overview of the places in this video.

We start this journey in the stunning riverside village of Fenghuang in central China. The wooden stilt houses are a spectacular sight, and the backstreets are still filled with old world charm. We then continue to Harbin, best known for its Winter tourism. Millions of people usually flock here to visit the amazing Ice and Snow Festival, to admire beautiful sculptures and palaces.

Yangshuo is another spot not to miss, mostly for its mesmerizing mountain landscape of limestone peaks. It’s a great place to witness life in the countryside, and has a relaxed vibe. After Yangshuo we travel to Beijing, the nation’s capital city. The impressive Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven Park are two main highlights. And the nearby Great Wall of China is truly a sight to behold.

Zhangjiajie is the next destination on my list, and one of China’s most beautiful national parks. It formed the inspiration for the popular movie Avatar. You can get an aerial perspective from the many walkways, and don't miss out on the Glass Bridge here, if you dare at least. I continue my journey to Lhasa, the spiritual heartland of Tibet, and a place that left a deep impression on me. Take into a account that foreign travelers can only visit Tibet as part of a group tour.

Shanghai is a unique city with a jaw-dropping modern skyline, but also has some impressive historic architecture. It’s a busy place to visit, but also has many laidback neighborhoods and quiet streets. Yuanyang, on the other hand, is quintessential rural China, with an epic landscape of rice terraces. It’s a good place to meet some of the minorities living in the South of the country, and eat some local food.

I continue my travels in Qingdao, one of China’s most scenic coastal cities, located on the Yellow Sea. Many Chinese tourists come here to enjoy the beach and eat fresh seafood, but I was particularly impressed by the historic German buildings. I finish this journey in Hong Kong, easily one of my favorite cities in the world, and a perfect fusion between East and West.

Street Food in Tibet - ULTIMATE TIBETAN FOOD TOUR + Amazing Potala Palace in Lhasa!

Thank you to for hosting me on my trip to Tibet!
????Thai Food - 1.5 Years Waiting List:
????T-shirts and caps:

Lhasa, Tibet - Lhasa is one of the most important cities in Tibet, and a home of Tibetan food and culture. In this video we’re going on an ultimate Tibetan street food tour of Lhasa, and additionally we’ll visit the Potala Palace and some of the most significant cultural sights in the city. Let’s start eating Tibetan food! #Lhasa #Tibet #TibetanFood #streetfood

Potala Palace - To begin the morning we started off visiting the Potala Palace, a fortress dzong, with tombs, chapels, and assembly halls, and once the seat of the Dalai Lama. Today it’s still used as a monastery, and a school for Tibetan Buddhist monks. The magnitude will blow you away.

Tibetan Tea House - One of the best parts of culture in Lhasa is the tea house culture. There are big teahouses all over the city, and local Tibetans congregate to drink tea, eat Tibetan food and socialize. I tried some yak noodles, both yak and vegetarian momos, and both sweet and salted tea. Tibetan yak noodles - 6 RMB ($0.84) per bowl

Tibetan Teahouse #2 - Located just off Barkhor Street, on this Tibetan street food tour, we then went to another teahouse, this one probably the largest and most well known local spots in Lhasa. The ambiance was incredible, so vibrant and so energetic. Since I had just had yak noodles, we chose to try some friend noodles and tea, and soak in the Tibetan culture.

Dzomo Cheese - Hybrid between yak and cow - Next we tried some dzomo cheese on the streets of Lhasa, very good and slightly animaly.

Laping noodles - Price - 5 RMB ($0.70) per bowl - One of my favorite of all Tibetan street foods is laping, a type of noodle, sliced off, then mixed with chili oil and spices. It’s the perfect light and flavorful street food snack.

Legendary Yak Momos - Price - 1 RMB ($0.14) per piece - On the corner, just outside the Barkhor Street circle, is a famous yak momos hole in the wall restaurant. The momos were hot and fresh, made right before you order them, and they were some of the best yak momos I’ve ever had.

Cheese Fungus Soup - 6 RMB ($0.84) per bowl - Dolma mentioned that this Tibetan cheese fungus soup is rare to find nowadays and during this season, so we were lucky to find it. It ate like a porridge and was hearty and filling.

Jokhang Temple - Barkhor Street - One of the most important places in Tibetan Buddhism and in Lhasa is Jokhang Temple, and people often walk 3 circles around the temple each morning and evening.

Tibetan Food Dinner - Finally for dinner, it wasn’t really street food, but it was a local Tibetan style dinner where we tried a number of Tibetan dishes. My favorite was the pickled preserved radish stir fried with yak meat.

It was an amazing day in Lhasa, Tibet, lots of delicious Tibetan food, and a chance to learn a lot about Tibetan culture.

Thank you to Travel China & Tibet ( they sponsored my trip to Tibet, and they did an amazing job to cater to the exact things I wanted to do. Highly recommended when you visit Tibet.

Tibet, on the lofty Tibetan Plateau on the northern side of the Himalayas, is an autonomous region of China. It's nicknamed the “Roof of the World” for its towering peaks. It shares Mt. Its capital, Lhasa, is site of hilltop Potala Palace, once the Dalai Lama’s winter home, and Jokhang Temple, Tibet’s spiritual heart, revered for its golden statue of the young Buddha.

Amazing Things to Do in Lhasa & Top Lhasa Attractions

Discover with us the most amazing things to do in Lhasa & Top Lhasa Attractions. At an altitude of 3,656 meters, Lhasa is one of the highest cities in the world. This administrative capital of Tibet is also an important religious centre of Tibetan Buddhism. With more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, Lhasa is also known as The City of Sunshine.
Attraction number 1 is the Potala Palace, also considered one of the wonders of the world. The origins of the building date back to the 7th century AD and it was substantially rebuilt in the 17th century. Since then, it has become the winter palace residence of the Dalai Lamas with a richly decorated interior. There are more than 1,000 rooms, 10,000 shrines and about 200,000 statues. The Potala Palace is still one of the most sacred and revered monuments of Tibetan Buddhism. Today, the site is considered one of the most fascinating museums in the world with an extensive collection of artefacts, artistic objects and important historical documents.
If you like to discover hidden treasures on your travels, don't miss Barkhor Street located in the heart of Lhasa. This street is always packed with wanderers from all over the world. There is a saint road encircling the Jokhang Temple from the 7th century AD and for Tibetans, it is the most important pilgrims' circuit ever. You can experience direct contact with the religious traditions of this region. Local people believe that a religious clockwise walk around Jokhang Temple brings them blessings from Buddha Shakyamuni. In the present day, Barkhor Street is both a bustling shopping centre and a touristy old quarter with colorful Tibetan features. Here you can relax in a teahouse, have a local meal or shop for souvenirs.
While exploring Lhasa, be sure to visit Norbulingka, translated as Treasure Park. It houses the Dalai Lama's summer palace from the 18th century with 374 rooms of various sizes and is surrounded by the largest man-made garden in Tibet. It covers 36 hectares and is full of trees and flowers with colorful buildings. Within the grounds, visitors can even watch the production process of Thangka, a unique Tibetan scroll painting with silk embroidery. Did you know that it was in this complex that the Austrian mountaineer Heinrich Harrer helped the Dalai Lama build a small cinema? The successful film Seven Years in Tibet shows more than just this event.

Tibet's 13 Best Attractions according to Lonely Planet

Tibet's 13 Best Attractions according to Lonely Planet

13. Nam-tso
Namtso is renowned as one of the most beautiful places in the Nyainqêntanglha mountain range. Its cave hermitages have for centuries been the destination of Tibetan pilgrims. A surfaced road across Laken Pass at 5186 m was completed to the lake in 2005, enabling easy access from Lhasa and the development of tourism at the lake.

12. Ganden--Samye Trek
Tibet is one of those places you really should experience at the pace of one foot in front of the other. This classic four-day trek between two of Tibet's best monasteries takes you past herders' camps, high alpine lakes and a Guru Rinpoche hermitage, as well as over three 5000m-plus passes.

11. Ganden Monastery
Ganden Monastery is one of the 'great three' Gelukpa university monasteries of Tibet. Its full name is Ganden Namgyal Ling. Ganden means joyful and is the Tibetan name for Tuṣita, the heaven where the bodhisattva Maitreya is said to reside. Namgyal Ling means victorious temple.

10. Guge Kingdom, Western Tibet
The spectacular lost kingdom of Guge at Tsaparang is quite unlike anything you'll see in central Tibet; it feels more like Ladakh than Lhasa. There comes a point when you are lowering yourself down a hidden sandstone staircase or crawling through an inter-connected cave complex that you stop and think: 'This is incredible!'

9. Saga Dawa Festival
Buddha Jayanti, or Saga Dawa in the Tibetan language, is the most important religious festival for Buddhist Tamangs. This festival is held on the full moon of the 4th month of the Buddhist calendar.
