Perpignan is a southern French city near the Mediterranean coast and the border with Spain. It was the capital of the Kingdom of Majorca during the 13th century, and a significant Catalan influence is evident in its medieval core. South of the old town, the huge Gothic-and-Romanesque Palace of the Kings of Majorca has ramparts with views to the coast.
Framed by the peaks of the Pyrenees 13km west of the Mediterranean coastline and just 38km north of the Spanish border, Perpignan radiates out from the tight knot of the old town's warren of alleys, palm-shaded squares and shabby tenements painted in shades of lemon, peach and tangerine. Historically, Perpignan (Perpinyà in Catalan) was capital of the kingdom of Mallorca, a Mediterranean power that stretched northwards as far as Montpellier and included all the Balearic Islands; the Mallorcan kings’ palace still stands guard at the southern end of the old town. Its proximity to Spain means the town is strong on fiestas.
Perpignan (Perpinyà in catalan) is the capital of the department of Pyrénées-Orientales, the Northern Catalonia part of France and is situated about 15km from the sea. Perpignan is home to about 117 000 people, and has two rivers flowing through it; with the Têt to the north, and the Basse through the centre.
The main way to get around in Perpignan (due to its relatively small size) is by foot, but there are buses run by Compagnie Transports that go right through the city centre, and then further out, even going as far as Cabestany and Canet. Driving is also a good way to get about, with lots of underground parking in the city centre, but beware, during the summer and 'tourist season' there will be a lot of traffic, and few parking places left.
The Cathedral of St Jean Baptiste was begun in 1324 and finished in 1509. From the outside unimpressive but inside a formidable construction in the typical south French gothic style. Alot to see in ( Perpignan - France ) such as :

The Abbey of Sant'Antimo, Italian: Abbazia di Sant'Antimo, is a former Benedictine monastery in the comune of Montalcino, Tuscany, central Italy. It is approximately 10 km from Montalcino about 9 km from the Via Francigena, the pilgrim route to Rome. The name of the abbey may refer to Saint Anthimus of Rome, whose relics were supposedly moved here during the late 8th century.
After many years of disuse, the abbey was reoccupied in 1992 by a small community of Premonstratensian Canons Regular. Since January 2016, the occupants are a community of monks of the Olivetan Benedictine order. A tributary of the river Orcia, the Starcia, runs near the abbey.
In 1291 Pope Nicholas IV ordered the union of the abbey with the Guglielmites, a reformed branch of the Benedectines, in order to give back strength to the abbey. However, after another period of decay in the 15th century, Pope Pius II annexed St. Antimus to the new diocese of Montalcino-Pienza (1462), whose bishop was Pius' nephew. The abbey decayed to the point that in the 19th century it was used as stable. In the 1870s the Italian state restored it. In 1992 the abbey became again an active monastery with the arrival of a new religious community of Canons Regular of the Order of Premontre.
Of the Carolingian edifice, the apse (called Cappella Carolingia) and the portal, richly decorated with animal and vegetable motifs, are visible. The Carolingian chapel has frescoes by Giovanni d'Asciano with stories of St. Benedict and currently acts as sacristy. Under the chapel is a crypt with a nave and two aisles divided by four columns. The Sala Capitolare (Capitular Hall) is decorated with a triple mullioned window with richly decorated capitals.
Typically French in inspiration is the ambulatory with radial chapels. In Italy this scheme is known only in Santa Trinità of Venosa and the Cathedrals of Acerenza and Aversa, all in southern Italy, and in Santa Maria of Piè di Chianti, Marche. The ambulatory housed the pilgrims to pray the Martyrium, the place where the Saint's relic are placed. The aisles and the ambulatory are groin vaulted, while the nave has trusses. The nave, which is c. 20-m high, is divided into three sections: the huge arcades, the matronaeum and the chiaropiano (upper floor).
Notable is the so-called capital of Daniel in the lions' den, work of the French Master of Cabestany. It shows Daniel praying between the hungry lions, and, on the other sides, the lions devouring the accusers. The outer walls are made of Alabaster, you can shine a light against the walls and see the light translated/reflected back out to the eye.

Le Maître de Cabestany à l'Abbaye de Saint-Papoul
LE CHEMIN DE RONDE. L'abbaye de Saint-Papoul est aujourd'hui reconnue comme un important témoin de l'art roman en Languedoc grâce à la renommée du Maître de Cabestany qui a exécuté, pour l'édifice, un programme de sculpture décorative dont les restes essentiels sont visibles sur l'abside de l'église abbatiale.
La visite de l’abbaye de Saint-Papoul débute par la découverte de son magnifique cloître édifié au début du XIVe siècle. Maintes fois dévasté, saccagé, il fut aussi restauré à plusieurs reprises. Il comporte une série d’arcades retombant sur des colonnettes jumelées. Parmi les chapiteaux subsistants, certains associent un décor végétal avec des personnages capuchonnés, têtes nues ou couronnés qui en jaillissent. Les rares chapiteaux historiés représentent de petites scénettes : festin d’Hérode avec Salomé portant la tête du Baptiste, adoration des mages guidés par l’étoile de Bethléem… Ça et là, un bestiaire imaginaire de griffons, et même des chimères, comme cette étonnante femme à corps de félin ; le monstrueux et le fantastique font ici le lien entre le roman et le gothique, sous le signe d’un Moyen Âge fantastique.
L’abbaye présente divers vestiges de l’époque romane (XIe - XIIe siècle) dont l'abside ornée de chapiteaux sculptés redécouverts en 1993 et dus au ciseau du Maître de Cabestany. Une exposition permanente située dans le réfectoire des moines de l’abbaye permet d'apprécier les sculptures (moulages) du Maître. C'est un sculpteur exceptionnel qui a été actif depuis la Catalogne jusqu'à la Toscane. Comme c'est le cas pour la grande majorité des artistes de cette époque, son nom ne nous est pas parvenu et c'est par le toponyme du village où à été identifiée la plus importante de ses œuvres connues qu'il est, de nos jours, nommé par les spécialistes. Il est, en effet, l'auteur du tympan réputé de l'église de Cabestany (Pyrénées-Orientales).
Le style du Maître de Cabestany le distingue de tous les autres sculpteurs de son époque et révèle une personnalité forte et originale que l’on retrouve dans toutes ses œuvres. Il excelle dans la qualité des compositions par des mises en scène de personnages aux gestes variés, aux expressions marquées. Il se reconnaît ensuite par le canon des corps ; facies et têtes triangulaires, yeux en amande, globuleux, ponctués de deux coups de trépan au coin des paupières, nez droit, oreilles larges, décollées, barbes et cheveux aux longues mèches striées, les mains aux doigts démesurément longs.
L'abside de l'église abbatiale de Saint-Papoul (seconde moitié du XIIe siècle), possède un ensemble monumental important attribué au Maître de Cabestany. Il se compose d'une corniche, garnie d'un boudin torsadé, portée par six colonnes couronnées de chapiteaux et de mordillons, dont quatorze sculptés. Seulement deux chapiteaux sont historiés : le premier évoque « Daniel dans la fosse aux lions », le second « Le châtiment des Babyloniens ». Les autres chapiteaux, dérivés du corinthien, sont rehaussés d'un répertoire iconographique animalier ou végétal.
Sur l'un des deux chapiteaux, on voit Daniel dans la fosse aux lions où il fut jeté par le roi Cyrus. Daniel occupe le centre de la composition entouré de sept lions. Il est représenté de trois quarts, se tournant vers Habacuc soutenu par un ange qui lui apporte de la nourriture. Les fauves affectueux et soumis lèchent le condamné. L'expression de sérénité du visage de Daniel suggère admirablement l'assurance du juste face au péril. Cette scène se rapproche étroitement de celle que l’on voit sur le chapiteau de Sant’Antimo en Toscane. Le second chapiteau représente la scène du châtiment des babyloniens. Trois babyloniens sont assaillis par des lions, l’un d’entre eux a saisi et entraîne un des accusateurs de Daniel retenu par un de ses compagnons. Daniel fut retiré de la fosse et ses ennemis y furent jetés. Le roi reconnut ainsi la supériorité du Dieu de Daniel.
Des vingt mordillons de l'abside, quatorze nous sont parvenus. Outre des figures humaines qui attestent l'extraordinaire technique du Maître, on distingue aussi des têtes de monstres, un lion et un bouc. Les têtes d'hommes, à la chevelure fournie, sont dotées de très longues moustaches ou de barbes abondantes. Les têtes de monstres, aux mufles puissants, ont en commun des yeux en amande au globe proéminent, à l'instar des personnages humains.
Le Maître de Cabestany semble avoir eu une aura importante à son époque puisqu'on retrouve ses œuvres tout au long d'un chemin traversant le Languedoc audois, le Roussillon, la Catalogne, la Navarre et même l'Italie.

Then on the opposite bank you can find the Benedictine Abbey of St Mary of Orbieu, founded in the 8th century, which was very prosperous in the past and had considerable intellectual influence. The courtyard of the old palace, the lower chapel, the cellar, the bakery, the sacristy, the north transept, the pre-Romanesque tower, the monks' dormitory, the Chapel of St Bartholomew, the Master of Cabestany's room and the guards' room are all fascinating sights to see during your visit to the medieval part of town, which belongs to the General Council of Aude.
